Leon, something must be wrong on your end!
I amgetting about 5-6 messages a day on GLOWBUGS.
Some days I see 10-12.
My messages are showing up, but the overall traffic has sharply
dropped off, and I understand that they have been having some
difficulties lately.

Huh? I was asking JEFF about VISIO symbols.

What does: "This won't work" mean?

Greetings Men From Earth!

Does anyone out there have schematics for a tube-type compressor? I would
prefer one with a broad enough bandwith to record live music through but
one suitable for a single vox microphone will be just ducky!

Also:

I am looking around for a _very_ simple morse rig to build in preparation
for getting my ham license. (No-code schmo-code I say!) Can any of you
old-school fellows dig up one that is fairly simple, low-powered and
would cost less than $100.00 to build? The new ARRL handbook seems to be
geared away from the beginner- and the po!

Thanks!

There are some designs for these in the ARRL Handbooks that most of
us have, although they tend to usually be CLIPPERS rather then
compressor/limiters which is what you really need for your purpose
there. I will take a look and see what I have, but my sources are
limited compared to what some folks have out there!

If there is enhough interest, I could scan a compressor circuit and
put the schematic out on the WWW for all to see in .GIF format.

YES! There is in fact a glowingspitzensparkenfirebottleetherburner
KIT available for the price range you suggest.

It is called the CWCP-5 and was featured in Electric Radio
magazine last month. It is put out by Carl, WB1EYE and I think you
can get the complete kit including power transformers and everything
for about $100.

No kidding! That is why you need the older ones from the 1950s, 60s
and even the early 70s!

Are you from Southern Indiana? I used to live in Nashville, TN (Not
the one in Indiana - grin!) and made a few trips up that way to
Bloomington and Jasper. I repaired Kimball organs for a few years and
was trained at the plant there. Had a girlfriend from Bloomington
whose dad edited the local paper.

It's a nice area if you don't mind flat terrain!

Happy hamming - Bry

Got a Cunningham UY-224 tube at an antique radio meet today, for a
princely sum of $2. Sold on 11/11/32 according to the sticker. Seller
told me it was good....

If so, can this plate-cap equipped tube be grafted into some sort of
Hartley peanut-whistle? I've been archiving all the glowbug talk for
some time but the number didn't ring a bell -- but for the price of a
Big Mac I thought I would take a chance. <grin>

HI again Steve...by "CX250" I'm guessing you mean 4CX250...is that
right? IF that's your tube, then you'll find it makes an exceptional
linear...for grid driven service. It dosent like grounded grid con-
figuration at all....something that Eimac recommends against in their
literature. But, the 4CX250 is a fine amp..and will run in a Johnson
socket...far cheaper than the Eimac equivlent....minus of course, the
internal bypass capacitors for the screen. But, at HF, the tube will
perform well....with 250 watts or so of plate dissipation capacity,
at 2 kv or so. Be sure to watch for negative screen current when you
tune up your rig...best to use a good, stiffly regulated supply and
meter it just in case. Lots of folks use a reverse current trip to
dump the HV and protect the tube.

A pair or 2 pair of those tubes will make a really nice amp for full
power use, run AB1 with a nice big non inductive resistor across the
input giving voltage drive to the grids. But, with 4 tubes in parallel,
it still wont take much drive to make them rock....with approx. 300
watts out at 350 volts on the screens. So, 4 would give you a good,
clean 1200 watts out.

I use a 4-1000A in class B gg service...works nicely and gives anwhere
from 1200 to 1800 watts out on a good day, remembering that in gg
configuration, most of the drive power reappears in the output as
energy coupled to the antenna, so you have to figure in that amount
for an accurate reading of output.

I realize the cost of these big bottles...and it can put a damper on
one's plans to build that "perfect" amp. That's one reason I went to
the 4-1000 as there used to be a bunch of them available as "Pulls"
from the Broadcast industry...not so much any more. I see that the
4CX1600 from Svetlana is running at about $670 or so to hams, and that's
within a few bux of a brand new 4-1000A, so guess I'll just keep the
old firebreathing monster and save the money I'd use building a new
amp. This one runs at 4400v on the plate, so it's no slouch.

Take Care Steve and write if I can be of any more assistance.

Boatanchorites:

Greetings from sunny and windy Sacramento.

I have a Measurements Model 65-B signal generator which I need to
troubleshoot (nothing happens when power applied). I need a
schematic as well as whatever other tips anyone can provide on
troubleshooting as well as disassembly (rather cramped in there).

Looks like a good canadate for BA servicing with calibrated output
down to about 0.1 microvolt, and variable modulation from 0 - 100%
covering about 75 kc/s to 30 mc/s.

    Any help is appreciated.
