Michael, I have an Icom IC-2iA that doesn't have a keypad. I never did get it to "speed dial" the autopatch where I used to live, but I never used the patch much anyway, so no big loss. The 2iA was supposed to have this "artificial intelligence" system that decided if you knew enough about radio to be allowed to do things like change frequency (as opposed to channels) and such. I hate it when a machine thinks it knows more than I do. I guess the "final exam" that convinced the radio you knew what you were doing was to disable the artificial intelligence. It was great, of course I was just a casual participant. A couple of hours here and there. Using my K2 and the Hustler vertical I managed to scratch out 90 DX contacts and added 40 new countries to my log. I now have 85 countries and I just started logging them a month ago. I did cheat though...ran QRO at 10 watts. I really am amazed at how well this little rig and antenna works. I have been a ham now for 27-28 years. I have had towers with very large Yagi's. I have had multi kilowatt amplifiers and top of the line transceivers. I did not find out how much fun Ham radio was until I got rid of all that stuff and discovered "Low Power" and QRP radio. Just felt I needed to vent...... 73 Brent WB4X ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 30 Nov 2003 16:43:51 -0800 (PST) From: Mark Hogan To: Low Power Amateur Radio Discussion Subject: [162105] Re: NORCAL cap kit-Thanks Message-ID: <20031201004351.98747.qmail@web9601.mail.yahoo.com> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Now thats why this is a cool list. I just wanted to thank everyone for your check-ins. I think the band dropped on me from the east coast since I wasn't able to get everyone's comments. As for the net itself, I held it a bit later tonight to give others a chance to rest up from the CQ WW and digest what you had consumed over the last few days. < grin > We'll be back on the regular schedule of 0100z next week. 8 check-ins tonight including Chris ( KD5UDB ) Chris in from Baton Rouge and always has a good signal up here in MO. Some of you folks down there twist his arm and lets get him into the club. A couple of our folks were in and out just before the net started but we're going to count them in the log anyway. LOL First up: Don KC2CK nice to have you aboard Don even though the band changed and we lost you before we got your comments in for the net. You had a great signal ( 569 ) when first worked but no body home when I got back to you. Hope you'll jump in again next week. Phil WB8ABE Phil was also in and out early so we didn't get to hear his comments either. Always a pleasure to have you in there Phil. Stop back and say howdy. Tom AC5JH Nice to have you on the net tonight Tom. I haven't worked you in awhile so a double pleasure getting your check-in tonight. Hope you'll come back and see us again soon. Mike WA8BXN Hi Mike and thanks a bunch for being there again this week. Mike is a regular on the net and I love to have the support. Chris KD5UDB Thanks Chris for stopping by. I very much appeciate the check-in. Member or not !! ( Now when you gonna get that piggie number ) LOL Tom WB5KHC You were low in the noise when you checked in Tom but popped up to a 559 before ending your comments. Thanks for jumping it there and hope we'll hear you agian on the net. ( or in a ragchew, or a hit and run or any other time ) Bill NV4T Hi Bill, super signal from FL. Thanks for being in there this week. You make a lot of the nets and thats great. I'll look for you again next week. Mikey WB8ICN Mike, what can I say ?? Thanks a bunch for giving me an opportunity to run the net for awhile. It's a ton of fun and there are a great bunch of folks out that support us. I'm really glad you got some free time and I really appreciate you stopping by to check in. I don't know if I'm doing this stuff like it's suppose to be done but, per the clubs mission, I'm having FUN. Thats it folks. I hope everyone had a great holiday. ( didn't eat too much, stayed sober, didn't spend to much money, didn't have to beat the kids, < TOO MUCH > or the dog, had plenty of time to play on the radio, lost your honey do list, and in general, had a super weekend. ) 72 es OO Jerry N0JRN FP # 546, 4SQRP, ARS # 923, ARCI # 11049, ARRL, Springfield, Mo. He sent the kits to me as NorCal had supplied the pc boards for the kit and suggested that I finish kitting them and offer them to the group. He sent them complete with the manuals. I ordered the parts last week when it came up on the list and several people mentioned it. We have 93 kits left, of the original FT. Smith VE3DNL kit offering. This is the kit that I suggest as a starter kit for those who have never built before in my "What Kit Should I Build Series" that I wrote a couple of years ago. The VE3DNL Marker Generator was designed by Glenn Leinweber, and is one of the most useful tools that a qrper can have on his bench. It is ideal to mount in an Altoids tin, and it is very easy to build and get working. The manual is very well written and provides clear directions. The generator can be set up for marking on 5, 10, 20 or 40 hertz, depending on the output selected. This enables you to find where you are with that NorCal 40, Sierra, SW40 etc. rig that did not come with a digital readout or an AFA. Plus, Chuck Adams showed me how he used it for a poorman's signal generator when he wanted to align a receiver and there were not signals on the band. Chuck had built the very first SST, on 20 meters, and we finished it at 3 AM in the morning. 20 was dead, but Chuck just reached for his VE3DNL marker generator, and listened for the signal in the receiver. When he wanted to attenuate the signal, he just moved the VE3DNL farther away. I was blown away by the simplicity of it all. If you would like to order a kit, it is simple: You may order by regular mail by sending a check for $12 made out to Jim Cates plus a note saying that you are ordering the VE3DNL Marker Generator kit. Please enclose a self addressed mailing label, it really helps Jim a lot. Send to: Jim Cates ATTN: VE3DNL Kit 3241 Eastwood Rd. Sacramento, CA 95821 or, you may order by Paypal. George Heron, our webmeister, is out of the country at this time, so you will not find an ordering button on the amqrp website. But you may still use paypal. Send your payment of $12 to amqrp@earthlink.net and be sure that you indicate that you are ordering a VE3DNL kit. That's all there is to it. Don't delay, because there are only 93 kits left, and I have no idea when we will do it again, or if we will. 72, Doug, KI6DS ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 1 Dec 2003 00:04:45 EST From: ARDUJENSKI@aol.com To: qrp-l@lehigh.edu Subject: [162110] FS: HW-7,8,and 9 (Package deal) Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit I have an HW-7, 8, and 9. With some receivers it doesn't take too loud a signal to make strange things happen. And the regulations don't require absolute perfection either. You can often hear a strong 2nd harmonic from a near by station when they use a multi band antenna with no antenna tuner. Maybe one of the folks here on the list who has the skills could post a bit about this. It's been a long time (I think) since this topic has been discussed. We have sold a lot of paddles in the last few days - more than we currently have in stock. As of Saturday afternoon we had orders for 185 paddles. The first 100 paddles were sold out in a little over 4 hours. To be fair, we will sort through all the orders and try to determine when the order was received. We will be using email date/time stamps and post office stamps. We will ship based on a first come first served basis. The first 100 paddles will be shipped this week via US first class mail or Global Priority mail if you are an european customer. I am ordering more parts to build another 200 paddles. Our small organization can produce 100 paddles in about 2-3 weeks. So, I would expect the second 100 paddles to be shipping around Christmas. The 3rd run paddles should be ready sometime in mid January, 2004. I will try to keep everyone informed by an occasional post to this list. We thank you for your support of the AZ ScQRPions. Chuck did it again and the kit is exteremely simple and usable. The paddle works without independent battery. I played one with my FT-817, Sierra and DSW-II. Any of the built in keyer transmitter will accept the paddle as a small companion. http://jacksonharbor.home.att.net/ham.htm Though Chuck doesn't show in the web, the paddle kit come with well fabricated conduting cover in case of dry skin. I can't believe this is 7 dollars kit. Thanks Chuck. Even you favor mechanical paddles, this JHB thouch paddle will be a spare in field operation. This is my tip. If you change a stock 1uF dielectric capacitor to a low profile one You can carry one in your wallet. Polishing edge of board before soldering will increase quality of your completed paddle. No relation to JHB, just a satisfied customer. I knew it was a winner the first time I saw it. I think that you set a record for selling out 100 kits. It sure beats anything that we ever had for our kits. Great job and a great product. Guys, don't miss out on these paddles. They are a super bargain at the $25 delivered price!! When Jerry first told me about them, he said that they used the NorCal paddles as a starting point, and tried to improve upon the design by adding three important features: 1. They used silver plated screws for the contacts. Brilliant idea, and simple to do. 2. They use a ground wire attached to each paddle arm and to ground, so that the intermittant problem is just not there. 3. They use a piece of brass for the base. Brass is far easier to work with than the ugly steel bases that we used for the NorCal paddles. But that is what ham radio is about. Improvement on a design. Wayne Smith came up with a fabulous concept in the NorCal paddles. Jerry Haigwood took his design and made it better that is the way it is supposed to work. I really want you to know that I endorse this project in the highest possible way. It is a winner, and the ScQRPions are the latest heroes of QRP. Great job guys, keep up the good work. Again, take my advice and order one of these kits (I ordered 4). You won't regret it. 72, Doug ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Dec 2003 02:12:14 +0300 From: "Oleg V. This is just before the ARRL 160 m contest which will be this coming weekend. An excellent opportunity to exercise your 160 m capability and the only mixed mode ARCI contest. Contest: QRP ARCI Top Band Sprint Date: December 4, 2003 from 0000 Z through 1200 Z. Operate in the evening, in the morning, or throughout the night. How to participate: Get on 160 m around 1.810 MHz, the QRP CW fq, or 1.910 MHz, the QRP SSB fq, and call CQ TST or answer others calling. Don't forget that the segment 1.830 to 1.835 MHz should be used for intercontinental QSOs only, in compliance with the ARRL band plan. What to say: Give a signal report, your state, province, or country, and your QRP ARCI member number (use your power if you're not a member). QSO Points: Each member is worth 5 points, each non-member on same continent is worth 2 points, and each non-member on a different continent is worth 4 points. SPC Multipliers: Total of states, provinces, and countries on both modes. Power Multiplier: for SSB QSOs (PEP) > 10 W = 1x 2 to 10 W = 7x 500 mW to 2 W = 10x < 500 mW = 15x for CW QSOs > 5 W = 1x 1 to 5 W = 7x 250 mW to 1 W = 10x < 250 mW = 15x Use the smaller multiplier for all contacts if you operate mixed mode. Final Score QSO Points X Total SPC Multipliers X Power Multiplier Use the High Claimed Score Form at http://personal.palouse.net/rfoltz/arci/form.htm to send me your summary, then send me a copy of your longs. I built a Norcal 49'er when I was living in Chiba, Japan, and operating as 7J1AWL over there. I took it over to W0XO's shack last week, as it had been sitting in a bag for years untested. We hooked it up and VOILA! no smoke. However it's in a permanently key-down state. It produces a nice tone on 7.04, but something is wrong in the TX section. Hm. Although grandpa is a homebrewer, he specializes in large tubes and wooden boxes--real works of art, but nothing small like the 49er. So he was stumped--not completely, but at 88, he didn't feel up to ripping into the circuit. I thot I'd ask an elmer locally who might be able to pinpoint the problem and get this little 49'er on the air. Any elmers out there? I'm in St. Paul, vy 73, Jonathan Haynes KC7FYS/0 ------------------------------ End of QRP-L Digest 3121 ************************ --------------------------------
