Message-ID: Date: Thu, 13 Jul 2006 06:19:14 -0400 Yes, that's one of the downsides - you will generally be responsible for getting the item back to the seller at your own expense. However, I've always gotten my full payment refunded, including the original shipping costs TO me. Paying shipping for the return trip is simply the cost of doing business and part of the risk you assume. Just like in the physical world, if you buy something from the store that doesn't work and you want a refund, it's up to you to get in your car and drive to the store at your own expense. They don't come and pick it up, or pay for your gas as part of the refund. I understand that some people have had bad experiences on eBay. My point is that I have bought a lot of radios through eBay (including one just last night) and have had few problems. EBay is the ONLY marketplace where such a large number and variety of radio-related equipment is available, but you have to follow a few simple rules. 1) Ask a lot of questions and be willing to walk away if the seller is unresponsive, vague, or seems shady in any way. There is never an item that you MUST have; another one just like it will come along. 2) Save all email correspondence between you and the seller regarding the item and it's condition. 3) Pay attention to the seller's feedback. 4) Use only Paypal, with a credit card, to pay for your purchases. 5) Be reasonable in your expectations. 6) If a problem does occur, present your dispute in a professional and reasonable way. One thing he always harped on, hard, was 'Never give anyone access to your bank account beyond the checks you write.' Not health clubs, insurance companies, utilities, car payments, rent, paypals, not anyone. My first wife allowed the insurance company to automatically deduct our /monthly/ premium from our checking account and two days after she'd set that up they took six months' worth and we were bouncing checks. We had to close that account and I don't do business with that insurance company any more. I'm also no longer married to her but that wasn't precipitated by the bank fiasco. Hardly a month goes by without hearing about something similar. It might be difficult to not give Paypal your account info, especially if you sell on eBay, but I'll never do it. I've considered setting up a special account just for Paypal and keeping the balance very low but the monthly low balance service charges and that I'll get dinged just like Chuck for overdrafts just doesn't make it worth it. Until banks are more responsive to consumers and allow limits on such transactions (and I'm not holding my breath ;-) I don't engage in such transactions. Banks often cash altered checks. Further, you are giving out your bank account number, which in turn can lead to other forms of hacking. I use a credit card that is just for internet use with a bank account not connected to my main back. Also, pay for small items with cash, especially in restaurants. And I am happy with that arrangement, but I only want to use a CC for my payments, and they insist on making my linked account be my primary source, with the CC my secondary... the cause of my overdraft problem. -Chuck Article: 102736 of rec.radio.amateur.boatanchors From: "Avery W3AVE" Subject: Re: Resistor Source Date: 13 Jul 2006 18:21:34 -0700 Message-ID: <1152840094.090707.310790@i42g2000cwa.googlegroups.com> References: RadioDaze has new 1W carbon comps. Although I cannot find a manual for it I understand that the transmitter on this rig put out some 50W from 60 - 80MHz into a 70 ohm feeder. Now if the load were a purely resistive 70 ohms at 70MHz only about 0.85A would be indicated making the 4A range seem a bit of overkill. Although I realise that at some frequencies the opposite would be the case, 4A does seem a lot. As a result I'm curious about the way the TBS-7 was matched to the line and wonder if anyone can point me to a schematic? The crystal holder has a neat lead seal with a Hallicrafters "h" impressed on it, to keep anyone from opening the holder. That type of filter is a prewar design (one-crystal filter), where the crystal was part of a balanced circuit before the first I.F. amplifier. It could be used with a variable "phasing" capacitor to null a heterodyne, or sharpen reception bandwidth. Most receivers used a switch-selected set of resistors across the single crystal filter to reduce the selectivity to permit 'phone reception. (for example: the Collins 75A-2 receiver) Better than nothing on a crowded c.w. band, but the ringing is annoying and tiring. Modern crystal filters are the lattice circuit type, where an array of crystals are used to get a flat-topped passband of the desired bandwidth. A "six pole crystal filter" has six individual crystals in the filter. 73, Ed Knobloch Article: 102749 of rec.radio.amateur.boatanchors From: nanu Subject: FA: Collins AN/PRC-47 HF Xcvr. I have several pieces of ham equipment that I bought on eBay and I got what I paid for every time. The only real problems have been a couple of people who mistook a customs invoice for a declaration of replacement value for transport loss. In one case the difference was large enough to need correction. But I have, looking around here, a keyer, paddle, microphone, HF rig, antenna tuner, audio DSP filter, artificial ground, Noise canceller, speech processor, flashlight and reading light--all acquired via eBay. And that's just my desktop. Around the room, a portable air conditioner, another HF rig, digital TV receiver, HDTV VCR, DVD player, stereo, HDTV set, and VHF-UHF handheld. In my bedroom there is an old S38B Hallicrafters. All from eBay. The trick, you see, is to evaluate the listing (and the lister's feedback) to ensure that the item is what you want. Then don't bid anything more than you're actually willing to pay for the item. Take shipping into account. This means you will lose a lot of auctions. But you should not care, since you will lose them to people willing to pay more than YOU think the item is worth. Now, a fair amount of that stuff was new when I bought it and came from dealers who happen to operate eBay stores. But a lot of it was second- hand as well. -- Dave Oldridge+ ICQ 1800667 Article: 102751 of rec.radio.amateur.boatanchors Subject: Re: Latest RADIOMART ebay scam!!! I only ever had one problem that involved real money. And It was my fault, not theirs (I got suckered into dealing outside eBay channels). Just a week ago I had a minor problem where something stuttered and I bought the same thing twice (from a dealer). eBay told us how to handle that smoothly and promptly so that I didn't have to buy twice and the seller wasn't charged for the sale. The thing with eBay is to document every sale ON eBay. Do everything through eBay, except possibly private emails to a seller or buyer (but keep copies). If a dispute arises, it is usually because either the seller has misrepresented an item or the buyer doesn't want to pay for it. And eBay is well aware that, without buyers, they'd be a shell, not a business. -- Dave Oldridge+ ICQ 1800667 Article: 102752 of rec.radio.amateur.boatanchors From: "Steve N." He picked up large amount of Collins surplus - in late 1970s and early 1980s - and had a few "local" Cedar rapids hams buy items for him -- before Rockwell closed the "Surplus Store" in mid-1980s. I have sold him surplus Collins items that I have picked up from the Collins store in early 1980s. He traveled the Midwest hamfest circuit for over a decade - before he discovered "mail order and catalogs". As the Collins inventory has dwindled -- Bob has migrated into "general surplus" - largely electrical. Surplus can be a tough business of buying excess inventory or large quantity of items - and then finding the right market (It's not a "get rich quick" business - and you need cheap STORAGE) Most of the comments I have read are factually based. The Web site can be deceiving - and has not changed for a few years. 1. Products listed and shown that are no longer available (and have not been for at least 2 or 3 years) - such as Turner hand microphones. 2. Current web photo of the warehouse is bogus (It does not look like that) -- SSN shipping address changed about 2 years ago - none of the photos changed. I have physically been to that address - no signage and in a 2 block area north of Qwest Center (location of Union Pacific's old "shop yards") north of I-480 2 local businesses in other warehouses - did not know of SSN as a company in the warehouse area. Draw your own conclusions - my opinion is private and based upon 25 years of fact and personal selling/buying experience with SSN.
