But those days are over thanks to park superintendent John Latschar. He's ruining the Gettysburg battlefield. He calls it restoration. Desecration is more descriptive. If we spent another dime we'd be supporting the destruction. We refuse. Trees are being ripped out wholesale. The deer have been slaughtered. Visiting on a November evening is an experience everyone should be able to enjoy, but he shortened the decades-old operating hours so you'll be ticketed and labeled criminals. He threw up so many one-way signs that traffic in town has become a tourist's nightmare. His nonsense goes on and on. He likes saying, "The time for comment was during the planning, not now." Well, Bozo, the public DID and continues to comment, but you ignore them. Tens of 1000s have voiced their concern, but you act as though the Gettysburg battlefield is your own private domain to use and abuse as you please. It belongs to the taxpayers, not an arrogant, government-appointed bureaucratic freeloader. Gettysburg battlefield ghost hunters have been turned away in droves because he equates them with drug users and drinkers. What a moron. Not only is the town losing a fortune toward the local economy, the park is losing thousands of watchful eyes from some of the most respectful visitors. Those with evil intent will always gain access at night as was proven by recent vandalism. Closing the park merely keeps honest folks out. John Latschar has, in effect, given vandals free rein. Attendance is lagging. He blames everything except his own bumbling. He constantly moans about never having enough money to fix rotting cannons, monuments and buildings, yet continues wasting funds on mindnumbingly senseless projects that divide the townspeople and drives others away. It's typical government ineptness. Looks like John Latschar sits around dreaming up new ways to piss people off. If he's not shooting the wildlife, cutting down 100s of acres of trees, changing the hours or screwing up traffic flow, he'll devise some other dumbass plan. Chances are he'll eventually move on to another location leaving his mess and debts behind for someone else. It wouldn't be the first time. What's worse than allowing John Latschar to inflict so much damage to the Gettysburg battlefield? Most of you sit idly by and let it happen without so much as a whimper. Talk is cheap, but a Gettysburg boycott speaks volumes. We're doing our part. Good bye Gettysburg. You were our favorite place on Earth until John Latschar raped you. Now you're just a memory. Drake used sensitive DC relays that would eventually magnetize. You could take the relay out of the radio and demagnetize it, or just reverse the current flow in the relay every few years - much simpler! 73, Barry WA4VZQ@ARRL.NET Article: 102964 of rec.radio.amateur.boatanchors From: "Bob Rinaldi w1cny" References: Subject: Re: Boxboro Date: Wed, 9 Aug 2006 08:57:13 -0400 Message-ID: <5uydnfTZv4IxRkTZnZ2dnUVZ_oWdnZ2d@comcast.com> Boxboro info: http://www.boxboro.org/2006/index.html Bob "Leanne" wrote in message news:ebbbi40pve@enews1.newsguy.com... > When is Boxboro? This is the very worst kind of practice ! It'll soften up ppl for *real* scams in that case. Well I'll be damned. Indeed it does. Thanks Steve. In defense of the person who reported the post as abuse to prodigy, I have to agree that it had all the smell of phishing, especially given the mysterious private registration of optoutprescreen.com and the level of detail of info they're asking for. Even with the mention on ftc.gov, I'm hesitant since it certainly wouldn't be the first time a govenment site was defaced. This blog entry seems to echo my concerns, and surprise and seems to vouch ultimately for optoutprescreen.com http://www.gripe2ed.com/scoop/comments/2005/10/25/12231/587/0/post The whois for the optoutprescreen.com looks really strange to be legit though. About the only thing a diligent user can hang their hat on, outside the ftc.gov linking to them, and that links to this site appear to be all over the place on google from a numbre of apparently legit sources, is that their SSL certificate appears to have been issued by Verisign/RSA Security to the following folks: CN = www.optoutprescreen.com OU = West Corporation O = Consumer Data Industry Association L = Washington ST = District of Columbia C = US Consumer Data Industry Association does appear to be the legit trade organization of credit reporting agencies. So, it does appear this is the official, legit place to go, and that all the crying wolf is not necessary. The same however can't be said for the much advertised on TV freecreditreport.com (a commercial venture requiring registration in a service to get your reports) which ain't the annualcreditreport.com that the FTC points to. This is a simple way to stop them from releasing your personal information to anyone without your permission. I read about this is a real newspaper and got on their website and got the link. It isn't anonymous. DomainsByProxy is the owner of the domain in the registry. But they are acting as a go between for any contact between the world and the entity that is actually occupying the domain. What if they're doing nothing against the terms of use of the registrar, but are still a privacy invading copycat trying to look like the official industry opt out site? In the trust game, proxy registrars really shouldn't be involved. It's completely silly for this site to be using a privacy service and a discount registrar than any tom dick or harry with a web site can use to easily and very inexpensively sulk into semi-anonymity. The use of semi anonymous registrars like this is simply not something that inspires consumer trust. Given the nature of the site (and the number of competitors in the credit services field who are essentially reselling a free service and using your info for their own purposes along the way, such consumers have a hard time figuring out which one is the "real" canonical site), whoever decided to register that domain with godaddy and do it with domains by proxy made a very amateur decision. I mean, it's ironic that in order to help your privacy and be diligent about protecting disclosure of your personal information to third party marketers, you have to put your trust (and a lot of it--name, address SSN and birthdate) in a site that isn't registered in whois with their own organization name and address. I have my domain registered through the DomainsByProxy service, but then again, on these sites, I'm not asking people even for a credit card number much less the complete kit for identity theft (name, address, ssn, birthdate, etc). Not really, I was just using the term (entirely anonymous) that you used for sites that use DomainsByProxy. As I explained, this is a very thin layer of protection for the site owner. They are indeed the same domain and both point to 199.38.43.105. So I use DomainByProxy. I don't fault ya for that, for your application (same reason I use em). Then again, you're not exactly hosting a site endorsed by the federal goverment pertaining to credit information and pointing the entire country there to volunteer their personal information to get off prescreen lists. :-) > However, the one point everyone seems to be missing is the Federal > website lists: > > http://www.optoutprescreen.com > and the website in question is: > http://optoutprescreen.com > > Or maybe it is the other way around, anyway, they aren't the > same site. Perhaps the one registered through DomainsByProxy > is a scam? Afraid I have to disagree with you again. First, the original poster to the thread posted https://www.optoutprescreen.com/opt_form.cgi and the ftc website points to http://www.optoutprescreen.com/ One click on the main page yields the same link the original poster made. But it doesn't matter anyway! http://optoutprescreen.com and http://www.optoutprescreen.com are the same site, both A records point to the IP address of 199.38.43.105 which is in the netblock owned by West Corporation. Finally, there isn't any virtual hosting tricks going on either--web requests to both http://www.optoutprescreen.com and http://optoutprescreen.com net the exact results/page. > Using someones SSN for other than a handful of proscribed purposes is > federally illegal. The registrar prohibits illegal activity by its > registrants. That does little to give anyone confidence though. Check any public email address box and you can probably find scores of phishing mails pointing to places doing things that are illegal. Assuming anyone's caught or prosecuted successfully, the registrar has no way of finding out unless someone specifically complains. Anyone that sees a Domains By Proxy registration and thinks "oh, this MUST be legit--I mean, they have an AUP and all!" is kidding themselves. > > In the trust game, proxy registrars really shouldn't be involved. > > It's completely silly for this site to be using a privacy service and > > a discount registrar than any tom dick or harry with a web site can > > use to easily and very inexpensively sulk into semi-anonymity. > > If you look carefully, it isn't. Perhaps the one on the DomainsByProxy is > a spoof website. Huh? You may need to look again, and/or gain a better understanding about DNS and web virtual hosting. Because they are identical web pages. Filesizes of returned html are identical, text content identical with no differences. /tmp $ wget http://www.optoutprescreen.com /tmp $ wget http://optoutprescreen.com /tmp $ ls -tlar index.html* -rw-r--r-- 1 user users 11262 Aug 11 13:42 index.html?rf=t -rw-r--r-- 1 user users 11262 Aug 11 13:42 index.html?rf=t.1 /tmp $ diff index.html?rf=t index.html?rf=t.1 /tmp $ Doing a whois on optioutprescreen.com yields DomainsByProxy. A whois on www.optoutprescreen.com yields an error. But as I said above, it doesn't matter, the original poster and the ftc website are consistent, no the site's apparently not a scam, so everyone should get off MM@DisneyWorld.org's back for having posted the consumer tip already. :-) And if I haven't done so explicitly, I wanna make sure I apologize to Dean for my misinformation way back up-thread.
