Also, it is the reluctance of the windings that limits the current. reluctance = 2*pi*frequency. Lower frequency = lower reluctance so current is limited primarily by the resistance of the winding. So the winding gets hotter than at 400 cycles. Also the back EMF induced in the windings is less because of the slower rotation - not good thing either since back EMF also limits current. Plug it in outside and watch from a distance. You might want to put a fuse into the line just in case. Art3HBA so the field turns slower. --NextPart_Webmail_9m3u9jl4l_27150_1240089211_0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * ---REMAINDER OF MESSAGE TRUNCATED--- * * This post contains a forbidden message format * * (such as an attached file, a v-card, HTML formatting) * * Mail Lists at theporch.com only accept PLAIN TEXT * * If your postings display this message your mail program * * is not set to send PLAIN TEXT ONLY and needs adjusting * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * --NextPart_Webmail_9m3u9jl4l_27150_1240089211_0-- ------------------------------ Message-ID: <21E778F700EC490599ED5041D4016EBA@gateway> From: "Sandy" To: Old Tube Radios Subject: Re: NEED MANUAL For GE SSB ADAPTER Date: Sat, 18 Apr 2009 16:18:05 -0500 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed; charset="iso-8859-1"; reply-type=original Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Are you sure it is the number you specified? This radio is the next-to-last vacuum tube receiver built by Mackay and is therefore a quite advanced design. The "B" variant is, I think I can say without contradiction, quite rare. This example is the only one I've ever seen, other than the one featured in a recent Electric Radio article. This one, however, is un-hacked, and appears to be all-original. It uses the famous "film strip" tuning mechanism, and has a crystal lattice filter for overall selectivity, and a pair of Collins mechanical filters (3.1KC and 500C, in this case) for SSB and CW, respectively. Cosmetic condition is quite good, though not perfect. The front panel is in good shape, apart from some glued-on labels. The rest of the radio could use a good cleaning, but otherwise ok. Electrical condition: I've only done a minimal test. The radio is definitely not dead, and hears on several bands, but it clearly needs work. Audio is pinched, sensitivity is not great. The film strip (an unreplaceable item, as far as I know) is in good shape, but the strip mechanism needs some work, as it fails to hold proper tension on the strip. I'll include the power cable I built for the radio. Pix at: http://www.jptronics.org/pix/3010b/ Price is $750, and I'll be happy to deliver it to Dayton. I would greatly prefer not to have to ship this radio, as it has no case and would be difficult to protect properly, but I'll certainly consider that as a last resort--shipping extra, of course.. 73, John K4OZY -- ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 19 Apr 2009 14:03:52 -0500 (CDT) From: "Robert Roehrig (K9EUI)" To: Old Tube Radios Message-ID: <1547586957.5976561240167832449.JavaMail.root@mars.aurora.edu> Subject: Millen Dipper FS MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=utf-8 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit I have a Millen 90651 Grid dipper for sale with the full set of 7 coils (1.7 to 300 MHz). Yes, it is true that on reduced frequency the motors have reduced inductive reactance. To avoid pumping more current thru the motor, the voltage is reduced. A 115 VAC @ 400 Hz should have no more than 115 * (60/400) V on 60 Hz. This could be upped a few volts because the resistive component is not frequency dependent. As this is probably an induction motor, the speed will be reduced to approx. 60/400 of the original speed. Many of the 400 Hz motors are 3-phase. That electrical supply is rare around a residence. A capacitor from one line wire to the third terminal will give a semblence of 3-phase. All of this suggests that a 60 Hz fan or a DC fan may more easily provide the cooling you are looking for. K6KPH transmits from the original American Marconi Company transmitting station established in 1913 in Bolinas, CA. Operators will be at the receiving station established in 1929 by RCA. What I see happening is just a simple extension of unplugging filters and noise blankers from receivers to "be sold in separate auction" of a piece of working equipment. Perhaps next we will see an SP-600 with each tube "sold in a separate auction"? Anything that "unplugs" is just yanked out and sold individually. 73, Garey - K4OAH Glen Allen, VA Drake 2-B, 4-B, C-Line & TR-4/C Service Supplement CDs Al Klase wrote: > Perhaps just a little sad, but that's the way it was back in the > '20's.
