Dear Soils-L and Agmodels-l list subscribers,

Welcome to the list! The list has only been active since Tuseday
November 16, 1993 and already I have received many requests for
more information about the list. This is the first time I have started
a list so bear with me; I aim to please!

I have received questions about whether or not the list is archived;
it is. I will figure out how to get access to the archives and pass it
along to the list. I am still waiting for the listserv documentation!
If anyone is familiar with listserv please post this information. I
will try to keep track of Frequently Asked Questions and post answers
on a monthly basis.

People have also asked me about topics. At this point, the list is
global. Any topic pertaining to soil science research (soils-l) or
agricultural simulation models (agmodels-l) is fair game. As
the list grows I will ask for volunteers to host sub-topic lists if
the list deems this necessary. As far as soils-l, I envision division
of topics along thelines described by the Soil Science Society of
America (S-1=Soil Physics, S-2=Soil Chemistry, etc.) I would like
agmodels-l to be a forum for people who have had experiences (good,
bad, frustrating!) with models to share their trials and tribulations
with the list. Models such as Ceres-Maize, EPIC, WEPP, PRIZM, and many
others are all topics for conversation. In fact, a FAQ for the list
could be a compilation of models available and their features.
The listserv admin has told me that a digested list is an
option if traffic gets quite heavy.

Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Jerome Pier. I am from
upstate N.Y. originally. I have a B.S. in Forest Biology from SUNY
College of Environmental Science and Forestry; an M.S. in Agronomy
from Cornell University College of Agricultural and Life Sciences and
an PhD in Soil and Water Science from University of Arizona. Between
my BS and MS I spent three years in the US Peace Corps as a Warm Water
Aquaculture Extension Agent in Mali and Central African Republic in
Sub-Saharan West Africa. I am presently a post-doctoral research
associate in the Biological Systems Engineering Department at
University of Nebraska-Lincoln working on Beta testing an agricultural
simulation model developed by the USDA-ARS at the Great Plains Systems
Research Unit at Ft. Collins, CO. My interests in soils science are
diverse although I am more interested in farming systems and
applications of technology to ameliorate water quality. My PhD
research dealt with Best Management Practices for Watermelons in
SouthWest US using buried trickle irrigation, tissue testing and soil
water tension monitoring. I am now working with the Management Sytems
Evaluation Area (MSEA) project as part of the President's Water
Quality Initiative. We are looking at using computer simulation models
(namely Root Zone Water Quality Model) for screening improved
management practices for irrigated field corn in central Nebraska.

Well, hope I haven't worn you out! I hope this list proves to be a
useful forum for anyone interested or actively involved in soil
science. Have a question? Post it to the list!

I just queried the listserv for recipients and find that there are

Dear Agmodels-L and Soils-L subscribers,

Dick Henderson posted a request dealing with Soil Quality in the
Vadose Zone and the lack of hydrological models which (attempt) to
simulate processes in this zone. I am working with a model developed
by the Great Plains Systems Research Unit of USDA-ARS (Root Zone
Water Quality Model) which is designed to simulate hydrologic
processes, plant growth, soil chemistry, nutrient dynamics and
management practices in the root zone. It is, as the name suggests, a
water quality model and deals with nitrogen and pesticides at the
moment. It is still in beta (some say alpha) testing and could use
some work but shows promise in allowing simulation of alternative
management practices for reducing ground and surface water pollution.

As far as Soil Quality, there is a Soil Science Society of America
committee (S372.34) named Defining Soil Quality for a Sustainable
Environment which is tackling this complex issue as we speak. There is
a committee member here at Univ. of Nebraska-Lincoln. His name is John
Doran (jdoran@unl.edu) and he might be able to give you an idea on
where the committee is headed. I will try to interest him in this
list. Be gentle with him since he just returned from sabbatical at
Rodale and is trying to get back into the swing of things.

My interest is in the economics of soil management, including
conservation practices, determination of optimal fertilizer
application, and management of manure and other organic matter.

I have worked in the U.S. Midwest and in West Africa. I spent 4 years
in the Republic of Niger as part of a farming systems project and
return frequently as part of a Purdue project in Burkina Faso.

I try to use the tools appropriate to the problem. Thus, I have
experience with many methodological appoaches, including simulation,
representative farm modeling, on-farm-trials and rapid appraisal
surveys. I am concerned that the modeling be tied to on-farm
experience.

In getting back into US based research I started some work on
variable rate technology (VRT) for fertilizer application. Right now
this is focused on some on-farm-trials with a collaborating
cooperative which has invested in all the latest technology (GPS
etc.). We will get into the modeling latter. I would appreciate
hearing from others working on VRT. In particular, I would like to
know the degree to which VRT services are becoming commercially
available in your areas and the response of producers.

My name is Theresa (Tess) Gidley. I'm a MS candidate in
Civil/Environmental Engineering at N. C. State University. My thesis
concerns the modeling of a subsurface flow constructed wetland. It is a
compartmental simulation model written in STELLA. I hope to use this
model to evaluate the effectiveness of constructed wetlands for
wastewater treatment under various configurations and conditions. One
current application is as part of a recycle system for aquaculture in
the southeast. I am currently looking for process models of nitrogen,
microbial and/or plant dynamics in saturated substrates.
My personal interests are in water quality and ecosystem restoration,
though I hope to broaden my education by "listening in." I received my
undergraduate degree in Agricultural Engineering from Virginia Tech in
Blacksburg, VA. While there I helped out with research projects on
pesticide fate and transport, nonpoint source pollution control/BMPs,
and rural groundwater quality.

The organizing committee of the 1994 International Congress of Soil
Science is offering a limited number of reduced-cost registrations to
full-time graduate students and retired scientists. The committee is
making the $200 registration on a first-come, first-served basis for the
10 to 16 July congress in Acapulco, Mexico.

Those taking advantage of the special offer would not receive conference
proceedings. Preference would be given to retired peer professionals and

Background:

B.S. in Meteorology from Iowa State (1988), where I worked as
an undergraduate assistant for Extension Climatologist Dr. Elwynn Taylor.

M.S. in Meteorology from Texas A&M (1991) where I served as the assistant
in the State Climatologist's Office with Prof. John Griffiths. My thesis
topic was an examination of statistical relationships between concurrent
temperature and dew point in Texas, with the goal of better understanding
the frequency of high temperature/high humidity for biological heat stress
and energy systems design.

I served as Regional Climatologist at the Southeast Regional Climate Center
in Columbia, SC from 1991 to April 1993. Some of the projects I was involved
with were an inventory of soil monitoring stations (soil temp., soil moisture,
etc.) for the Southeast U.S.; development of a menu-driven climate information
system and databse for the Southeast (CIRRUS); and production of weekly,
monthly, and annual climate summaries.

I returned to College Station in April to work at the NWS-SW AG WX Service
Center, and pursue my Ph.D. in Meteorology. The Ph.D. topic is still open
at this time, but I'm down to choosing among a few interesting projects.

The NWS-SW AG WX Service center is one of four operated by the NWS, the
others being at Purdue, IN; Auburn, AL; and Stoneville, MS. Our major focus is
meteorological support for agricultrual producers and researchers, and in
the case of our office, the service area is Texas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico.
We are co-located with the Soil and Crop Science and Entomology Depts. at
Texas A&M. We are involved in a number of projects with both departments,
and we also work closely with the Meteorology Dept. through the NWS
Cooperative Institute for Applied Meteorological Studies.

My personal interests include:

1. Methods and strategies for collection/analysis/dissemination of
meteorological data and information for agricultural users.

2. Identifying and installing appropriate crop models for operational
use as part of our office's advisory program.

3. Soil moisture and evaporation from a "meteorologist's" perspective

I would like to take a moment of your time to intriduce myself and
provide a little information about the organization I work for. My name is
Joseph Grant. I am the network administrator for The LEAD Institute. While
my education is in computer systems engineering, the program I am supporting
is international and deals directly with the environment and sustainable
development. The following is an overview of the program;

Overview of the Leadership for Environment and Development Program (LEAD)
and LEADNet

The complex challenges of environmental protection and sustainable development
demand a generation able to manage both endeavors as integral parts of single
process. To help satisfy this demand, the Leadership for Environment And
Development Program (LEAD) has been launched, sponsored by the Rockefeller
Foundation, in Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Nigeria, Russia, and
Thailand.

LEAD comprises a global college of accomplished individuals (we call assoc-
iates) from different countries and backgrounds who are intent on understanding
and solving some of mankinds most difficult problems of environment and sus-
tainable development. A National Host Institute (NHI) has been setup in each
LEAD country, there is a National Program Director (NPD) in each country who
has been assigned to take the responsibility for this country.

LEADNet is the physical communication network connecting each of the partic-
ipating countries to facilitate the access to knowledge and interpersonal comm-
unication required by the LEAD associates and faculty. Generally speaking,
LEADNet has two components: a physical configuration of communication and
computer equipment; and a corpus of information resources distributed over the
physical network.

As the backbone of the communication system, The LEAD Institute has equipped
each NHI with a Data General Aviion 530 workstation running DG/UX version 5.4.2
(a flavor of UNIX) and a small local area network with a Novell Netware file
server. Each associate or faculty member has been or will be equipped with a
personal computer running MS-DOS and MS-Windows. An Information Officer (IO)
has been assigned in each NHI to take the responsibilities of communications
among the LEAD members and between their associates and the LEAD Institute.

As supplements to the second component of LEADNet, IDRC, Canada's Inter-
national Development Research Center, and GTZ, an Information and Advisory
Service on Appropriate Technology of the Deutsche Gesellschaft Fur Technische
Zusammenarbeit of Germany, are two of the sponsors of The LEAD Institute for
providing the LEAD members with information resources. Our own on-line data-
base, on-line library, as well as expert systems in the environment and energy
areas have been considered to be included in our future plan for information
resources.

This list service has information that would be useful to the associates of
the LEAD program. While some countries are still working on setting up their
hosts we provide copies of information they may find benificial. Any one who
would like further information on our program please feel free to contact me

I am a PhD student at the Department of Soil Science, University
of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. I have been trained in
applied soil physics to evaluate suitable management systems for
agricultural land. I did my B.Sc in Indonesia and M.Sc. at
Lincoln University, Canterbury, New Zealand.

Right now I 'm working on "soil structure associated with cover
crops in lowland soils, British Columbia". The idea is to improve
highly degraded lowland soils, mainly due to axcessive tillage
operations and a lack of organic matter return during winter, from
soil physical point of view. Winter cover crops is one of treatments
recommended by a joint project of B.C. Ministry of Agriculture and
UBC Soil and Water Conservation Group.

Looking forward to discussing various aspects in soil science.

between vegetation and the atmosphere. Currently I am a research associate
in the University of British Columbia, Canada. I have been participating
in 'BOReal Ecosystems-Atmosphere Study' (BOREAS). My work focuses on the
dynamics of CO2 and H2O exchanges between the air and a boeal aspen forest in
Saskatwechan. I have just completed a 7-week field campaign in which
measurements were made continuously of CO2 and H2O effluxes from the
forest floor.

If any of you would like to know how to maintain long-term continuous CO2
and H2O flux measurements, or have good ideas how to interpret CO2 flux
from forest soils, please contact me.

Hello!
My name is Meredith Wessells and I am a PhD student at Ohio State in the
Environmental Science Program. I received my B.A. in microbiology at Miami
University and began work on my PhD a year ago. My research is on the effects
of different nitrogen treatments and earthworm manipulations on nutrient
cycling in agroecosystems. We have three different nitrogen treatments we put
on our plots, in which we grow corn; inorganic N fertilizer, cow manure, and a
leguminous winter cover crop of hairy vetch. Within each of these treatments,
we have set up three enclosures, one with an ambient earthworm population, one
with a reduced population, and one to which earthworms have been added. Our
group is looking at nutrient flux within these systems, particularly of
nitrogen, as well as physical properties of the soil, such as aggregation,
preferential flow, and macroporosity. I myself am currently measuring CO2
output from the soil throughout the growing season, and I would like to know
how the functional diversity of the soil microbial population changes with each
of these treatments. I am planning an experiment to look at this, with an eye
towards how this might affect carbon storage and nitrogen flux in the soil over
time.
My primary question at this time is: Does anyone know how best to look at
such a thing? And, does anyone have any information about soil microorganisms
which might be applicable?

My name is Tim Demko and I'm a Doctoral Candidate in the
Department of Geosciences at the University of Arizona. My email

I'm interested in paleosols, especially those as old as the Paleozoic
and Mesozoic. I'm working on several projects involving paleoclimatic
interpretations of terrestrial deposits of these ages. I'm especially
interested in the origin and interpretation of carbonate horizons and
their isotopic signatures. I'm basically a physical sedimentologist,
however, and my experience with modern soils is a little lacking.
I'm interested in just listening in on you guys/gals to keep up with
current soil science in addition to periodical scanning. I might pipe up

Sorry Al and the rest of the list members who are getting the same sort of
garbage as Al. I have gotten thru to the sysadmin and my helpdesk guru and

I have been working in conjunction with the EMAP-Agroecosystems
(EMAP=Environmental Monitoring and Assessment Program) program for the
last 3 years. Specifically, I have been evaluting nematode communities
(plant-parasitic and free-living) as an indicator of soil biological
health for use in that program. I have quantified the variability of
nematode communities indices among the three physiographic regions of
North Carolina (Mountains, Piedmont, and Coastal Plain), among fields,
within fields, and within composite soil samples. Quantification of
variance was necessary to determine a sample size for use by the
monitoring program. My current reseearch involves evaluating forage
perennial crops as a reference base for soils with annual crops. I am
also comparing nematode communities in organic vs. conventionally managed
soils. I just received a grant to compare index values in agriculture,
forest, and wetland soils, measuring them 8 times per year for 2 years.
Nematode communities will be measured along with available nitrogen and
decomposition rates of organic matter to determine whether nematode
communities reflect the ecological processes of nitrogen cycling and
decomposition in soils.

I have work continuously as a soil scientist since 1974 within
both federal and state agencies, and the private sector. This
work includes experience in 6 soil inventories, integration of
soil interpretations into 3 land management planning efforts, and
literally hundreds of site specific soil analyzes for diverse
project activities. I have integrated by job activities into the
work environment of general forestry, soil survey, watershed
management, urban development, and research. I enjoy the
challenge of relating soil data to mankind's past, present, and
future activities. I have a B.S. degree in Forest Science from
the University of Washington, and graduate courses in soil
science at Oregon State University and Cornell University. I am a
certified soil scientist under the American Registry of Certified
Professionals in Agronomy, Crops and Soils (ARCPACS).

I have had a relatively rich work experience in soil science. The
breadth of my work experience certainly helps me to venture into
new work areas. However, there are some special abilities and
interests I would mention. I have developed special skills in the
use of aerial photographs and understand well how to depict soils
and landforms in a study area. I enjoy creative endeavors. I have
generated many special soil interpretations for both program and
project level considerations. I have a special commitment to
understand soil degradational processes and have had success in
promoting sound land stewardship and practices. Lastly, I have
had considerable experience training other individuals. I have
received recognition from my co-workers, superiors, and trainees
for my training abilities and techniques.

My work procedures have been called both enlightening and
nonprofessional. I view and communicate soils information within
a broad perspective. I reject the constraints of narrow
professionalism. I strive to relate soils information within the
perspective of my audience: be they farmer, forester, engineer,
geologist, planner, developer, tribesman, friend, or whosoever.
Since my work falls primarily in the area of applied science, I
often adopt what some would consider nonscientific procedures.
This is because I recognize when there is a void in science, and
yet a question begs for an answer. Often logic can be used from
other sources to bear on the question, and I do not hesitate to
use alternative procedures. I have actually developed a system
of philosophy and logic to guide past voids and confusions to
aim at the truth. I do not lament the plight of the applied
scientist, nor knock scientific researchers. I simply talk about
how I approach very practical problems.

In closing, I suspect some will feel I have hit SOILS-L folks an
askance blow. Please don't feel that way. Most of you are
researchers and have important research activities you are
conducting. I am simply communicating that in the nature of my
work I go through many types of practical problems instead of
concentrated work on major research projects. However, I want you
researchers to know I have sought you out. I am excited about
SOILS-L and the introductions that have come through to date. I
hope to contact some of you and discuss common things of
interest.

I have read the other introductions with much attention and think its a
great idea of Jerome to break the ice in this way. So here is my
introduction.

My name is Mark Snethlage. Last year I graduated in Physical Geography at
Utrecht University (The Netherlands). I did my MSc research in Southern
France on soil crusting and erosion in 1990. In 1991, I carried out a Land
Evaluation in Northwest Botswana.

Presently, I work at Utrecht University, at the Department of Physical
Geography. Together with Mariecke van der Glas (who is a Human Geographer),
I work on a PhD thesis. The subject of our study is soil erosion in
agricultural colonisation areas in Parana (southern Brazil) and Eastern
Paraguay. Our aim is to carry out an integrated socio-economic and
physical study of the soil erosion process. At the end we would like
to formulate recommendations for the control of soil erosion in that area.

I am now working with two crop growth and soil erosion simulation models:
EPIC and PERFECT. I would be very glad to discuss experiences of
participants related to these models.

I would like to seize this occasion to submit two questions to the
participants:

1. what are your views on the possibilities and constraints to apply models
such as EPIC and PERFECT to developing countries.

2. As my colleague and I are heading for Southern Brazil in about two
months, I would welcome any practical information related to long stays in
that country (travel,food, accomodation).Also, I would greatly appreciate
addresses of soil scientists, geographers or institutes we might want to
contact over there.

Hello everybody!
My name is Joerg Kaduk and I'm currently working at the Max-Planck-Institute in
Hamburg on a PhD. I'm trying to develop a global vegetation model describing
the carbon dynamics in the land biosphere. Before coming to Hamburg I studied
Mathematics in Frankfurt/M.
In my work I started out with the HRBM by G.Esser and now I'm about to develop
a somewhat more prognostic formulation for NPP calculation and plant phnology
Currently I'm using quite traditional approaches like a hyperbola for the light
dependence of photosynthesis, a parabola for the temperature dependence,
AET/PET for the soil moisture dependence, a simple water bucket model,
Beer-Lambert's for light attenuation, and an Arrhenius relationship for res-
piration. Finally I'm considering only 16 biomes -as they are resulting from
the BIOME model of C.Prentice et al. I'm well aware that this is something
like the minimal (or less) configuration for trying do describe the carbon
dynamics.
So my interest in the agmodels and soils list is very much to learn something
about the models used there and trying to find out what are the most essential
variables in these models.
One example is: I'm currently thinking to introduce a two layer soil model
instead of one bucket -mainly to simulate the effect of water in the deeper
layers being carried over into the dry season and serving there as a water
resource for trees whereas the grasses do not have a water resource.
How do people feel- would two layers be enough? Especially in view of a future
somewhat detailed soil organic carbon model (so far it's only one pool as well)?
I hope that I bored you too much.
Finally I should like to say that I'd find it a great idea to make a list of
the currently used models -maybe with a (short) description !?

I'm a grad student working with Stan Buol at NC State. The < Soil Taxonomy>> are still available in floppy or diskette formats;
however, the software corresponds to the 1990 Keys. The programs have
not been written for the 1992 Keys. I will check with Stan to see if
this is being compiled.

25.0 SOILS AND SOIL BIOLOGY

Soils provide physical support, water and nutrients are to
terrestrial plants and are recipients of plant and animal
(including human) materials. As such, soils serve as the location
of key interactions between the abiotic and biotic components of
terrestrial ecosystems. It is here that many of the essentials for
the production of biomass are obtained and here that nutrients from
dead biomass are recycled into usable forms. We must further our
understanding of the basic mechanisms contributing to the immense
diversity in soil chemical, physical and biological characteristics
if we are to succeed in both sustaining agricultural production and
maintaining or improving environmental quality.

Linkages among abiotic and biotic processes within soils and
sediments regulate the flows of materials and energy through and
between ecosystem components. However, the mechanisms controlling
individual and coupled soil processes in the field remain poorly
understood. This program will support research on chemical,
physical, or biological processes of managed and unmanaged soils
and sediments. Genetic and molecular biology proposals will also
be accepted to examine the existing capacities or community
structures of natural biota. Problem areas include, but are not
limited to: (a) ecology and community dynamics of belowground
biota (including roots, mycorrhizae, bacteria, and fungi) and their
interactions within the soil environment, (b) soil surface and
weathering chemistry, (c) basic biochemical, genetic, and molecular
mechanisms that natural flora and fauna employ in uptake,
degradation, or transformation of agrichemicals or in competition
with introduced biota, (d) the feedbacks of soils, sediments and
associated biota in relationship to atmospheric composition and
climate, (e) the coupling of processes in soils, and (f)
development of approaches to relate static soil characteristics to
soil properties or fluxes to and from the soil (e.g., estimating
trace gas emission potentials from spatial associations of soil
texture, moisture and carbon content; development of quantifiable
indices of soil quality).

Other NRICGP and CSRS programs support research examining
specific soil biota or biological processes. Proposals which
include soil and/or soil biota as a component of a larger
ecosystem-level investigation, should be submitted to the
Forest/Aquatic/Range/Crop Ecosystem Structure, Function and
Response program. Investigators should contact the NRICGP program
director to discuss the suitability of a specific proposal prior to
submission.

Howdy folks:

Will Gates here. I'm finishing up my Ph.D. at the Univ. of Illinois in soil
physical chemistry with Dr. J.W. Stucki. My project is on the effects of
microbial reduction of structural iron in clay minerals, and hopefully a bit
on the reduction mechanism with Dr. H.T. Wilkinson.

I grew up on a farm in Minnesota, recieved a B.S. in soils at Montana State,
a M.S. in soil fertilityat New Mexico State, and worked a bit for the SCS
soil survey in Roundup, MT before comming back to school.

A good discussion topic: Impact of the past summer's floods on soil physical
and chemical properties.

Hi everyone- My name is Sharon Davis I am a PhD student in the
Cooperative Research Centre for Catchment Hydrology at Monash
University, Australia. I have an honours degree in Physical
Geography (Geomorphology) and am now discovering the wonderful world
of soil physics. My project is still in the early stages, however,
my general areas of interest are the scaling problems associated
with measurement of soil hydraulic properties both in the field and
laboratory.

At the moment I am compiling a literature review on the removal of
large undisturbed soil samples from the field for laboratory
analysis of hydraulic properties. If anyone has some interesting
ideas or references I would appreciate any feedback...Also, I am
planning to undertake an Instantaneous Profile Method experiment
(transient state internal drainage method to measure unsaturated
hydraulic conductivity) in the field (forested site) in the coming
months if anyone has some experience in this technique it would be
great to hear from you.

I'm a student on the first year of the PhD in Earth Science.
For my thesy I'm studing the volcanic soils and paleosols in S. Miguel
island (Azores - Portugal).
On this island there are typical andosols, very interesting for the
neoformation of clay mineral, the mass balance through the soil profile,
and the paleosols these last oneinteresting for the investigation about the
quaternary climatic variation.
