TRAINING PROGRAM ON COMPUTER SIMULATION OF CROP GROWTH
AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSES

We think that you and your readers would be interested to know that
the International Training Division at the University of Florida in
conjection with the International Fertilizer Development Center (IFDC),
the International Benchmark Sites Network for Agrotechnology
Transfer (IBSNAT) Project, and the International Consortium for the
Application of Systems Approaches to Agriculture (ICASA), is preparing
to offer a workshop on Computer Simulations of Crop Growth and
Management Responses from Aug. 8-19, 1994 on the campus of
the University of Florida in Gainesville.

This 2-week course, jointly conducted by the University of Florida,
IFDC, IBSNAT and ICASA emphasizes how comprehensive simulation
models of crop growth, soil water and nutrient dynamics are
developed and can be applied to cropping systems in various regions
of the world. Extensive computer time will be devoted to the use
of the new version 3 CERES models (maize, wheat, rice, sorgum and cassava)
and the new CROPGRO models (peanut, soybean and dry bean) for crop growth,
development and response to water and nutrients. Participants will receive
copies of all models as well as the newly released Decision Support System
for Agrotechnology Transfer Version 3.0 software package which supports
the application of the new crop simulation models.

The fee for the course is US $ 1400.

on this subject.

Mr. Dolye raises an important point that I have been struggling with. I am
currently studying microbial reduction of structural Fe in clay minerals.
The majority of trials (read samples) result in low levels of reduction.
So low that the effects I measure are not different from non-reduced samples.
But 10-20% of the trials result high levels of reduction _and_ significant
changes in measured properties (swelling pressure, flow behavior). If I were
to "average" my treatments, as would be statistically correct, I would not
have significant differences. But the data shows that the reduced samples
are very different from the non-reduced, or even the low-level-reduced samples.
The way I have approached it is to view the _effect_ as the important,
significant finding. Reproducibility, even at only 10-20% success, says
volumes more than statistical massage (to me (-:). This is not saying that
high levels of reduction occur during every assay (nor do these conditions
occur everywhere a soil is submerged) but it is saying that when high levels
of microbial reduction occur, the physical and chemical properties of clays
change significantly.

Obviously there are many factors that I have not been able to account for and
incorporate into the experimental design. Maybe it is impossible to account
for all factors, but I don't think this should stop one from moving forward
with new results.

I would appreciate any suggestions, discussions, criticisms, etc.

I would like to introduce myself so soils-l. I'm a graduate student going
for a PhD at the University of California at Davis. I'm in the Ecology
graduate group, but I'm hosted in the Department of Plant Pathology.

My research involves studying the ecology of soil-borne pathogens. I look
at cover crop decomposition over time, how the decomposing cover crop
alters nutrient cycling and soil microbial community dynamics. The
nutrient cycling and microbial community dynamics aspects are then
correlated to bioassays in which I test disease incidence or conversely
suppressiveness of the soil to diseases of vascular plants.

Basically, I would like to become a soil ecologist.

My areas of interest:
- soil nutrient cycling, organic matter decomposition
- soil microbiology
- agricultural issues relating to soil
- soil borne plant pathogens

A burning question for soils-l:

How can one measure diversity of soil microorganisms? All the techniques
I know of are loaded with problems.

Tim;
I saw your address on the soils forum for listserv and thought you might
want to have the addresses of various forest soil's types. There are
also a couple of people that don't work specifically in forest soils that
asked to be added. I've added your address to the list for now. Let me
know if this is OK.
We haven't made any specific plans for how to use this list, other than
as people need to contact another or let the whole group know something.
Hopefully, it won't get as annoying as some of the other lists I used to
be subscribed to.
I hope all of you there are taking good care of my baby sister. She
hasn't communicated a lot recently.

Howdy, I'm Darrell McCauley, a PhD candidate in Ag Engineering at Purdue.
My research is on (yet another) comparison of spatial interpolators
(thin plate splines and natural neighbor interpolation with gradients).

A burning question? I posted this one to sci.agriculture,
alt.agriculture.misc, and alt.sustainable.agriculture, and am posting
here on the suggestion of someone who read my USENET post [apologies if
you've read this once already]

I'm looking for geographically (or at least spatially) referenced data
from soil sensors to test out interpolation algorithms. The data
should be fairly densely sampled (20 m is WAY TOO COARSE). I've got
two sets of organic matter data already; almost any soil property will
do as long as it covers an area (not just a traverse) and has some
kind of spatial coordinates tied to it. To give you a feel for what I'm
looking for, the organic matter data that I've been working with was
collected while driving a tractor (with a soil sensor and GPS) around
in a pattern similar to one used when tilling.

Ideally, some meta-data would accompany it (e.g., # bits for
quantity/concentration measurements, relative accuracy of GPS
or other positioning system).

Dear Darrell,

I found that a very interesting Introduction. Thanks for the
resources. I have one question about methods: how did you collect
the soil organic matter (SOM) data? What is your 'soil sensor' ? Is
this some sort of Infra Red device? How deep in the profile do you
measure SOM? I would assume that only the SOM at the surface is
being detected. I am intriugued! Tell us more please!

The sensor consists of six light emitting diodes (LEDs) and a
photodetecter. Two LEDs have average intensity of 25.13-lumens while
the other four have average intensities of 37.70. The total intensity
is 201.06-lumens. The sensor has a peak wavelength of 660-nm and a
bandwidth of 50-nm. The sensor was housed within a specially designed
plow shank so that we're measuring reflectance a few cm down and so
that we can dig down a little way and avoid problems with ambient
light.

This was developed by Jason Shonk, a MS student in Ag Engr at Purdue a
few years back (along with Ag Engr and Agronomy faculty). For those
genuinely interested, there's a paper at
pasture.ecn.purdue.edu:pub/mccauley/papers/931555.ps.gz (presented at
the International Winter Meeting of the American Society of
Agricultural Engineers last December) which gives a simplified
schematic and references.

As I mentioned, I am not the original designer. If it were my job to
redesign it, I might consider doing multi-spectral measurements and/or
replace the single photodetector with arrays of detectors arranged
such that the reflectance is measured a several different angles (I'm
unsure of the effect of scattering). Jason's criteria, however, was to
design something that could be build very cheaply. I would guess that
there's less than $30 worth of components in the prototype that we
have, and that cost could be lessened by simplifying some of the
external circuitry. This sensor has been licensed for commercial
development by Tyler Ltd Partnership (Minnesota).

So, basically we're relying on reflectance to be highly correlated to
SOM (which can be a big problem in soils with high variability of moisture
content). I've partially concluded from a lab study that the sensor
does a very good job of measuring small scale variation when moisture
content is constant (see the paper).

Another past MS student here (Randy Price) designed a moisture content
sensor which was (I believe) intended to be used along-side the SOM
sensor. The MC sensor uses laser diodes. It was also being fitted
to a variable depth planter (not sure what happended to that effort).

We've also had preliminary work done on texture sensing using
acoustics (Wei Liu) and pH sensing (Alan Loreto). I believe that
evaluations of other sensors (e.g., nitrate) may have been done to see
if existing designs could be improved. All of this is headed towards
"on-the-go" sensing.

Most of this has been presented in publications of ASAE. Anyhow, I'm
more interested in spatial data analysis than the nuts-n-bolts of sensor
design. Thus the need for more data sets to test interpolation methods...

This is an interesting possibility to develop, if it can be determined
remotely from selected spectral band pass filters in the sensitivity range
of B/W IR film such as Kodak 2424 aerographic film. I have a
photogrammetry aircraft and camera that gives me 4 images simultaneously,
which allows 4 band pass filters to be installed. Presently I use a 5-step
wedge reflectance scale that is calibrated for the filters being used, and
is included as a reference in some scenes during a particular data
collection flight. This might be used to obtain the kind of data you need,
since we can easily get ground points with precision of better than 4m.
I'm working on improving that for rangeland, where it could be done with
high contrast panels in the camera field having known positions. (Pixel
size when I digitize the film currently being used is under 0.4m on the
ground, but is easy to control by how high I fly, or, within film
limitations, how many dpi I scan the negative. I fly now at 5,000'AGL,
giving a negative scale of about 1"=1,200'.) What do you know about the
reflectance of OM relative to the soil brightness? I might be able to
include some tests in the other on-going research, or maybe get a "pilot
project" grant to add it if it was more than I could handle "out of
pocket." I would need to become a "quick study" for this objective,
however, since it's new to me.
