Hello!

My name is Tess Gidley and I'm a grad student in environmental
engineering at NC State. I'm developing a mechanistic model (as
mechanistic as possible and reasonable) of a subsurface flow constructed
wetland for wastewater treatment on STELLA. I have two questions for
the soil scientists out there. The first question concerns the
sorption of ammonium on soil organic matter. Specifically, I'm trying
to find an estimate of what fraction of the CEC is typically occupied by
ammonium in an organic soil (pH range 5-9). I'd also like some clues regarding
where to find "lumped" organic matter decomposition rates. By "lumped" I
mean a single rate, as opposed to separate rates for different organic matter
components, such as celulose and lignin, etc. I realize I could probably write
an entire thesis on modeling OM degradation, so I'm trying to keep the
degradation model as simplistic as possible.
References, authors, rough estimations, etc. would all be appreciated.

published some stuff in the mid 1980's on climatic controls of organic
decomposition rates. That may have the "lumped" rates you are looking for;
also (if memory serves) his work has a pretty good review of the literature.

perhaps this lit review may answer my question, but since we're
on the subject of OM, I thought I'd ask.

I did some testing of a reflectance-based OM sensor. The signal
had a lot of high frequency "noise." After doing some lab tests,
I've come close to confirming that this "noise" is actually
small-scale variability of the phenomena. This is not
surprising considering the complex definition of "organic matter."
(I collected samples along a traverse, air dry them, crush, and
measure with a sensor so that moisture content and external factors
like strange EMFs and such would not effect measurements.)

I wrote this up and presented the results at a conference. A co-author
feels that I should pursue this further and submit it to a journal.
(He actually thought about small-scale variability of OM "quality" -
but this would take much more time and resources (mucho testing) than
are available.) I'm an engineer, not a soil scientist---is the high
frequency variation a well-known and documented fact? Should I team-up
with an agronomist and try to publish my results? The (hastily
written) conference paper is in

ftp, a gzipped postscript file, ask a local techie if these terms are
strange).

I've read a lot on semivariogram fitting for OM and never found
this observation stated quite this way (I did find this observation

I'm interested in reading up on spatial aspects of microbial distribution
in the rhizosphere and soil. I'm also wondering whether there is a
competition for space in the soil. The common dogma, as far as I know, is
that there is no competition for space among soil microorganisms in soil.
However, soil microbes are usually found in small colonies or clusters,
along the edges of root cells, at the base of root hairs, on a piece of
substrate, etc. which would indicate that there might be competition for
space. This might indicate that while space is not limited, the surface
on which life can persist is limited, and competition for that
life-supporting surface on soil aggregates, rhizosphere etc. might be the
case.

Does anybody know of any literature, papers, etc. that would give me some
more information on this topic? I did a literature search and I did not
find much. It is hard to find good search items that adequately cover the
topic.

We are a small group of professionals working in Bangladesh with USAID
support. We are looking at the role of river-borne sediments in soil
fertility, specifically the physical and nutrient composition of deposited
sediments, the spatial distribution relative to the mainstem rivers, and
the possible impacts of flood-preventing embankments. A big issue at
present is how to quantify the above processes.

We would like to establish contact with soil scientists who have similar
research interests in the U.S. (e.g. the Mississippi valley) or else-
where in the world, with a view to information exchange and technical
support.

on vadose zone nitrogen fate, I found a plethora
of nitrogen fate models that were available.
Unfortunately, within the literature describing
them, there was relatively little mention of how
much each model is being used by the agricultural
community, as well as little discussion of where
on the scale of research tool to management tool
each model lies.

If you are working in the area of vadose zone
nitrogen fate, I hope that you would take a few
minutes to describe some of the models that you
are presently using. This will help me get a
better picture of what is out there, what is
presently being used, as well as the expectations
that the agricultural community has for the
models.

I will be happy to post a summary of the replies
or provide it to those that are interested within
the next few weeks. The format of the
questionnaire is modeled from that which Georges
Vachaud, Michel Vauclin, and Thomas Addiscott gave
to the European community for their 1988 review of
solute transport models. If you know of any other
colleagues that would be able to contribute to
this query please pass it on to them. My address
