Interesting. I would like to ask you a crazy question which no one has
given me a satisfactory answer to. Years ago I saw a paper in which
someone reported that tomato root hairs grown in a culture with silica
microspheres (I don't remember if they were added before or after hair
growth) could be observed to have some of the spheres inside the root
hairs. The spheres were about half the diameter of the root hairs and I
mainly remember a vivid photomicrograph of a root hair with one of these
perfect little spheres inside. Now if you'll forgive the pun, this may
seem like a "wild hair" idea (a crude English phrase), but is this
absorption of solid particles possible? If it is, would it not explain
some plants apparent ability to scavenge nutriens and other chemicals out
of soils? I am a researcher and this is a serious question, though I admit
I am completely outside my area of expertise--as is probably obvious :).

Howdy! My name is Paul Neuhaus. I am currently finishing my M.S. in
Agricultural Engineering at Texas A&M University. My work deals with
site-specific crop management (SSCM) or prescription farming. I am
developing guidelines for determination of management cell size. These
guidelines will allow for flexibility in different situations, i.e.,
dependent upon a specific user's needs.

After graduation, I will remain working as a Research Associate. One of the
projects deals with determining the effects of varying the rates of two types
of herbicides. One type is a broad band herbicide that is varied according
to soil type (organic matter is less than two percent so it will not affect
the recommendation); the other is a specific chemical for Morning Glory
control based on where weeds were mapped the previous year. The other
project deals with mapping the variability of cotton yields in Texas.

I am always looking for spatial data sets, especially those will multiple
years for the same field. Any soil parameter will do.

A question that I want to see discussed is:
"What will happen to field trends (low frequency variation) if the
field is spatially managed, both in the short and long term?"

Could you clarify what would be included in low frequency variations?
Are you refering to N distribution, soil organic matter content, weed
distribution? One hyposthesis I would advance is that different plots
might diverge wrt to some properties if they are subject to differential
management. However, maybe in some instances differential management
might cause plots to converge, if for example management seeks, among
other things to maximize soil organic matter retention.

You may have seen this presentation (but hopefully it will generate
discussion) at the ASAE Summer Mtg in Spokane, Washington. There
was a gentleman presenting results of a leaching study that he did
over a couple of years (or more?). I'm sorry that I don't have the
exact ref (it was the same session that I presented work by Embleton
et al on a drinking water DSS). If I recall correctly, they dug some
deeps holes in a corn field and somehow monitored nitrate levels at
different depths. He presented the relationship between the amount of
fertilizer applied and nitrate concentrations. Though not presented in
the context of prescription farming, I recall that their results did
seem to support (quantatively) the common notion that we can reduce
contaminants that leach through when we apply fertilizer according to
local needs for consecutive years.

For those not too familiar with "prescription farming," a little bit
of information (along with references) can be found through mosaic
in the (shameless) uniform resource locator in my signature.

BTW, is there any remote sensing work related to prescription farming
going on down at A&M? (A friend at Temple thought that there might be)
If so, perhaps you (or Darin Motz) summarize what's going on.

Hi! I'm a soil erosion modeller, with a particular interest in the effects of
climate change on soil erosion by water. To be more precise, I'm a model user
rather than a model developer; in a world awash with models, why should I add
to the problem? Those I've worked with (using UK data) include EPIC, GLEAMS,
GAMES and WEPP.

Are there any other erosion modellers out there? Any from outside the US?

Hi everyone!

My name is Trish Fraser. I am originally from Scotland, but at
present am working as a soil scientist for the New Zealand Institute
of Crop & Food Research. I did my undergraduate degree at Aberdeen
University in Plant and Soil Sciences. Then just over 5 years ago I
came to New Zealand to do a PhD in soil science at Lincoln University
(which is just outside Christchurch in the South Island of New
Zealand). I worked in the area of nitrate leaching for my PhD on a
project entitled "The fate of nitrogen under an animal urine patch".
I completed my PhD studies and then came to work for Crop & Food
Research almost 2 years ago. I have changed my research directions
since starting work here and am at present working as a soil
biologist really, concentrating my research efforts on earthworms. I
would be keen to hear from anyone who is doing any research on
earthworms or in the general area of soil biology. There are only a
couple of people in New Zealand doing any reaerch on earthworms at
present, although a lot of classical work was done here in the past.

Question mainly directed to soil scientists who are not soil
biologists: "How important do you consider the activities of the
humble earthworm or other soil fauna in your experimental work?"

this activities of the worms in the creation of soil macropores is the
basis of my phd research. the study is on preferential flow of solute in
agricultural soils. one of the main characteristics in agricultural soils
which contribute to preferential flow of farm inputs like fertilizers and
pesticides is the presence of macropores. and to answer your question,
the humble earthworm and other soil fauna are the major contributors in
the creation of macropores.

my work involve characterization of soil macropores using a ct scanner
and the help of a image analysis software which operate on an SGI
platform called the IRIS EXPLORER.
my question is what temperature and conditions should i keep my
undisturbed soil samples (4" diameter 18" long) to arrest further
activities of these soil fauna ??? my objective is to keep my samples the
same conditions as they were taken from the field before scanning.

have not worked directly with faunalturbation, but my field observations
suggest that it is extensive. In my area ants, particularly, seem to do a
tremendous amount of work in soil mixing, regressive pedogenesis, and en-
hancing soil erosion. I've had students do field exercises inventorying
anthill size and density in forest/open land mosaics. The biggest and highest
density are along the forest/field edges. Is this typical?

Wasn't some work done a while back that showed that dung beetles may have
effects (I don't remember how significant) on soil fertility and tilth?

Hello there,

I wanted to share what I thought may be a valuable resource
for model corroboration/validation with some of the modelers
out there. I have recently been talking with a colleague who
works with the International Center for Agricultural Research
in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) research team whose name is Mustafa
Pala. He has informed me that they have been intensively
monitoring soil moisture profiles at their Aleppo, Syria research
facility for more than 10 years. In our communication he mentioned
that the roughly 200km^2 area had more than 2000 neutron access
tubes with readings taken roughly every other week. The area's
climate is arid with 30-40cm of precipitation annually, but their
soils are quite a bit finer.

All in all, I think that their data base would be a great resource
for corroborating the unsaturated portions of the transport codes
that are currently being developed. Mustafa has mentioned that
the ICARDA research team would be more than happy to work on
making the data available for model corroboration and that they
would be interested in developing joint projects.

Mustafa is currently on sabbatical at Washington State University
until July of this year. He can be reached through me at the email
address given below or through the Biological Systems Engineering
Department (509-335-1578) at Washington State University.

POST-DOCTORAL RESEARCH SOIL SCIENTIST/CHEMIST. USDA,
Agricultural Research Services (ARS), Water Management Research
Laboratory, 2021 S. Peach Ave., Fresno, CA. Research focuses on
the mobility of trace elements on irrigated agricultural soils
with emphasis on soils where biosolids have been applied.
Incumbent will be responsible for developing methods for
determining the various species of potentially toxic trace
elements present in soil, trace element solubility under field
conditions with different water regimes and methods to routinely
monitor movement and chemistry of trace elements within the
vadose zone. A Ph.D. is required. Knowledge of soil chemistry,
inorganic and trace element chemistry, and experience with
inductively coupled plasma (ICP) and atomic adsorption analysis
(AA) is highly desired. Salary is commensurate with experience,
but minimum is $34,662 per year plus benefits. The ARS is an

I am using a program called NLEAP put out by the SSSA. The program uses
data from the USDA Soil 6 and Soil 5 databases as complied by the
Soil Conservation Service.

Does anyone know if the SCS's soil databases are available on the internet
anywhere?

I have many of the same Question.

Currently, I have developed a small application that uses a DEM as source
data and calculates slope (degree), aspect (degree), curvature, profile
curvature, and planaform curvature. Along with other attributes such as
upstream and down stream areas. I have been able to use these attributes
to classify landscape shapes (valley bottoms , lower valley side slope,
upper valley sides, convex upplands), where each shape can be further
subdivided by slope and aspect. This little program is something I have
been working on spare away from work. These type of calaculation are
common to most GIS pagages (ie. I have been checking and comparing my
output from my program to out from Arc/Info 7.0 Beta III).

I would like to apply the output from my program to a real world soil
question.

Does any body have any sugestion?

Because my background is in pedology/geomorpholgy I want to use this
information along with other ancillary information such as vegetation and
surficial geology to some how model or predict soil type for
classification.

Yuri,
You might be interested it the work we are doing. We have a 8 x 32
foot erosion table that we scan before and after rainfall. We are looking
at areas one centimeter square. We compair before and after and do stream
anaylsis of the rills.

There's a good set of introductions to erosion research in the agricultural
area in the Jan/Feb 1991 J. of Soil & Water Conservation. Hard to believe

Hi Yuri, and others interested in the linkages between Erosion Modeling
and GIS.

The state-of-the-art approach with respect to this, is the combination
of a Spatial Database, Physically-based Erosion model, and Artificial
Intelligence techniques. The Spatial Database, or GIS, is used to store
the various properties of the region of interest as well as plot various
aspects of it. The Erosion model can then be used, with input parameters
coming from the GIS to assess the erosion potential of the region. Finally,
Artificial Intelligence techniques are used to analyze the results from
the Erosion model and suggest alternative land management practices where
erosion levels are high.
Another potential use of AI in such is system is for the selection of
an appropriate erosion model based on the landscape of the region as well
as the quality and quantity of input data available. The most physically-
based erosion models require very specialized input data which may not be
stored in the GIS.
In essence, the combination of a GIS, model and AI forms a Decision
Support System which can be used to help land managers figure out proper
land use schemes and minimize erosion. An example of this approach is
presented in the paper by Montas and Madramootoo (A Decision Support
System for Soil Conservation Planning; Computers and Electronics in
Agriculture, 7 (1992) 187-202).
Other examples of similar approaches are found in the work of Bernie
Engel of Purdue University. Finally, with respect to erosion prediction,
the USDA-ARS Soil Erosion Laboratory is working on replacements for the
USLE and RUSLE. Their work in this area is called the Water Erosion
Prediction Project (WEPP) and their team leader is J.M. Laflen.

Hi there. My name is Steve Sheldon. I'm just a GIS flunky
with the Iowa Cooperate Soil Survey here at Iowa State University.

We've been involved with the SCS in Iowa here for the last several years
producing digital files of SCS county soil surveys.

Only, since this whole thing started back in 1987 or so, most of the work
we have done has involved the use of a program developed at University of
Minnesota called MES(I think it means Minnesota Extension Soils?). And so
the resolution of our data is quite coarse. :(

Recently we started using LTPlus, which is what the SCS has been using.
It's a heck of a lot better, although still kind of a bear to deal with.

My job has been bringing the data from these two digitizing programs into
Arc/Info.

Just curious, are you planning on using the new raster->vector conversion
feature of the new Arc/Info v7.0 beta?

Otherwise, how do you plan on generating the vectors?

Also, I assume your goal is to meet the SSURGO standards set forth by the
SCS?

I suggest the book "Overland Flow" edited by Athol Abrahams and Tony
Parsons as a good place to start getting up to speed on the latest
(for water erosion, anyway; Univ. College London Press, 1992). Also,

by the SWCS and edited by R. Lal, is now on the streets.

a natural body. What do you think of these divisions as opposed to our
traditional organization? Warkentin has also rated the relative importance of
each proposed division for different applications. These ratings seem rather

I agree with Hubert J.Montas about the structure GIS-Erosion Model - AI.
I've done some work just for GIS-Erosion Model chain, not touching AI part.
I used Manning Eq. for velocity calculations and now looking at the theoretical
background of TR-20, TR-55 models, with a possibility to link them with GIS.
I work with ArcINfo package. So, what I found, that there is no adequate or
satisfactory model to predict amount of sediments, coming into streams from
surrounding terrain. It is either USLE (RUSLE) or
some sort of combination of Yang's stream unit power theory with Bagnold's
equations for sediment transport, both incorporated into the same USLE, like
in AGNPS model. All of these methods sometimes contradict with the physical
nature of the modelling object and its behaviour. I read about WEPP project
in J.Soil&WaterConservation, Jan-Feb, 1991 (J.M.Laflen, et. al.), but their
equation D = KIGCS still reminds me about the same good old USLE = RKLSCP.
I understand the difficulty of the problem and this is why I am looking for
Erosion Model, or advice, how to deal with this. I think empirical approach is
good, but, what about its "region" and "time" limitations ? Theoretical one is
also good, but there are not so many "working" equations ? I even don't touch
AI part, because this one depend on available choice of best management practices.
How many of them can now offer manager to prevent stream bank erosion ?

The guest editorial by Dr. Warkentin demonstrates a creative alternative for
focusing many of the divisions within soil science towards more of today`s
problems which can be addressed by soil scientists. His renamed disciplines
appear to be defined by the sources of funding which drive most of the
multidisciplinary research within the sciences of the soil. We continue to
expand the number of divisions within the SSSA, perhaps conglomerates of these
divisions could be incorporated into three to five goal-oriented disciplines,
some of which were outlined by Dr. Warkentin.

Thank you for responding to my question. I have a copy of the 1994 draft
of the National Soil Survey Handbook and I have read chapter 4 many times.
Either I have missed something or the answer to my question is not in there.

We are involved in the development of a digital soils database. We intend
that this database meet SSURGO standards. It is not clear to me what the
accuracy standards are. What is the maximum acceptable deviation in line
placement? And from what? SSURGO digitizing standards require that the
lines on the digital version not be more than 6 meters off of the source
document (the recompiled map). This is a precision standard for the
digitizing process. Is 6 meters also the accuracy standard for the
recompilation process?

We are experimenting with some different methods to recompile published
soil surveys to an acceptable base. The problem is this, depending
on the person recompiling, the base map, and the method used to recompile
the data, different maps result from the same source document. The
location of a soil line on two maps can differ by more than 30 meters. We
need to be able to assess the accuracy of these maps in order to chose the
most appropriate recompilation method. I may be asking for more than can be
expected, but right now I have less than I need.

Does any one know where a person could get a copy of the SCS Pedon data base?

I don't know exactly what this fellow wants. There is a Pedon Program in
which the soil scientist is able to electronically record soil map unit
descriptions. He may be referring to the characterization database. I
would call Ellis Benham at 402 437 5363 for database info. He is the
database manager for SCS lab.

We've got a copy of the beast on 9-track tape. It's not very much fun to
work with. I hope the SCS has made the leap and moved it to a CD-ROM,
which would sure make the data more usable. I haven't heard if this event
has happened. Sorry.

I obtained the SCS pedon database in 1991 from:

In 1991 there was talk about releasing the data to the public on CD-rom but
I don't know what's happened since.

I used the database to calculate soil organic carbon by order, suborder, and
great group. (Soil Sci Soc Am J. 58:439-455 and 57:200-210). (a little plug)

These data are NOT included in STATSGO. STATSGO has horizon (layer) information
for the mapped components that is from the Soil Interpretation Record. So
STATSGO has estimated properties as well as measured pedon characteristics.
