Hi All,

I'm new to the list, so I'd like to introduce me first:

I'm a geologist doing my Ph.D. on the elemental composition of deep
sea clays from the Cretaceous Penninic Ocean (+- 100 my old). Those
clays show a rhythmic black-green layering in the range of 5 to 50 cm.
One of my objectives is to investigate the cause of the black
layers. Therefore we performed elemental analysis on those clays.

Within the black layers the Na and Ka-Values (weight %) are
significantly decreased. I think that the "soils" in the source area
are depleted in Na and Ka by increased weathering, and hence the soil
derived clay-particles are depleted in Na and Ka too.

Furthermore I have clear expressed spikes of the Ti and Zr-values at
the beginning of the black layers. I interpret this as residual
accumulation of Zr and Ti.

Could this be a realistic scenario?

I should mention that all data has been adjusted for different
accumulation rates and dilution effects.

Please let me know about your opinion.

ortho-rectify to a satalite image, would that not be simpler?

Dear members of Soils-L

This calls for a reintroduction: I have recently accepted the position of
Sr. Research Specialist in Forest Hydrology at the Oklahoma State University,
Department of Forestry. I completed the requirements for a MSF in Forest
Hydrology at Stephen F. Austin State University, in Nacogdoches, TX.

My burning question is what to do with all these rocks? I have been given some
bulk density data collected in rocky soils. The rocks, in some samples,
comprise more than 50 per cent of the volume. Samples are 550 cc. I need to
consider soil compaction caused by timber harvest practices. There are many
published studies about timber harvest and soil compaction. However, to date I
have not come across any studies that document what has been done with rocks.

Should I recalculate bulk density by removing the rocks? Is there a published
standard technique for this? I have been given suggestions but have not found
anything in the literature. Some samples had large roots in them as well.

I welcome your comments and suggestions.

derived from a source area with weathered soils is likely to be correct.
Well-weathered soils in humid climates are typically depleted of soluble
bases. In the southeastern U.S. (and other areas dominated by Ultisols) the
base saturation is very low indeed. The titanium and zircon as a residual
also seems reasonable, but I have less experience with these.

If you're trying to look at soil compaction, it is unclear to me how you
might remove the rocks and retain an undisturbed, compacted soil. If
you've been able to get intact cores from rocky soils, that seems
remarkable in itself. If you have the cores with rocks, get the bulk
densities on them, then remove the rocks and run reconstituted (packed) bulk
densities on them.

It is unclear whether
the data you've been given includes or does not include the rocks.

BTW, I think there is an article coming out (will get citation) by Reinsch
and Grossman on reconstituted bulk densities. If not, you can contact the
National Soil Survey Laboratory in Lincoln (Bob Grossman or Tom Reinsch)
and they would be able to provide the details of the method for you.

I am new to this listserver and would like to introduce myself. My name is Leif
Arndorff and is a Ph.D. at the geological institute of the University of Lund in
Sweden. My doctoral work was dealing about the Upper Triassic and Lower Jurassic
palaeosols of southern Scandinavia. Hence, my areas of interest lies primarirly
in the field of palaeopedology, escpeically pre-quaternary palaeosols. However,
to be able to better understand the soils of the past I am also interested in
soils of today, its development and environmental significance. One 'burning'
question that I would like to discuss is the soils of the devonian and triassic.

I would be great to have any respons on this post.

Some things to consider when contemplating digitizing old soil surveys:

1. Who will use the data (everyone)
2. What will the data be used for (everything)

We have developed a process to digitize the old soil surveys in Nebraska.
The p
rocess is similar to the one described in your original posting with a few
excep
tions. We scanned the linework (soils, transportation, hydrology, spot
symbols,
etc.) independent of the imagery. The scanned image was vectorized in
LTPlus an
d then rubbersheeted (the information necessary to ortho-rectify is not
availabl
e) , edited, and attributed in Arc/Info. The map unit symbols and spot
symbols
on the original scanned image made attributing very easy. This process
worked v
ery well but the Soil Conservation Service declared the accuracy unacceptable.

This brings up another point. I respectfully disagree with Steve
Sheldons stat
ement concerning the relative importance of line placement and labelling.
Label
ling is very important but line placement is equally important. The
reason that
the subject of ortho-rectifying is even brought up is because many of the
users
will be making area measurements. Soil boundaries are just an
approximation of
where the soil changes it's properties but soil lines (on a map) are an
exact t
hing. HEL determinations were made, taxes are levied, wetlands are
located, etc
.on the basis of soil lines.

Digitizing old soil surveys is a time and labor intensive process. A very
high quality product can be created with only a little more effort than a
very poor quality product can be created with. Easy don't live here no more.

some one to talk to. I have talked to other people who have been
digitizing soil surveys and their accuracy is also unacceptable by SCS
standards. This why I brought the idea of ortho-rectification up. I know

I am a graduate student in the Program of Environmental Sciences at the
Ohio State Unversity, and
I am planning to do my research project in subsistence tropical
agricultural systems (corn-based) in Yucatan and Veracruz, Mexico. I am
especially interested in the dyamics of soil organic matter (SOM),
biological activity and nutrient availability (N) compared under the
traditional slash-and-burn and alternative legume-based agroecosystems. I
intend to take measurements in both, farmers' fields and small replicated
experimental plots under similar conditions. In preliminary soil samples,
spatial variability of organic matter (and other soil properties) is very
large, and I am wondering how to address this problem... Has anybody had
any experience in using fractal distribution as a means of describing the
pattern of soil properties? How useful is it as a statistical tool to make
inferences? Where can I get information on this? What other approaches
would you recommend?

Hi Jonathan,

thanks for replying! But now the crucial question: How long does it
take to generate a base-loss in soils? From my data I can see that the
Na + K Values drop within some thousand years to a level which is
sustained for the whole period (10 - 100 thousand y) of increased
weathering. Relaxation is again within a couple of thousand years.

Zircon has only a sharp peak at the beginning, Titan peaks fast too,
then drops to a high and sustained level.

Since this is the Cretaceous, you have to consider intensified
bio-geochemical cycles. CO_2 was up to ten fold compared to today,
temperatures on most parts of the world were as high as 35 C and
humidity was increased too.

I should mention that the area of deposition was around 25 N, thus it
might be possible that the source area of the clays was in the
vicinity of the subtropical high pressure cell.

Tim:

The information that you need is contained in chapters 4 and 5 of the National
Soil Survey
Handbook. I don't know if the final version has been released yet, I have a
draft version. You should be able to get a copy through any Soil
Conservation Service State Office when it becomes available.

One thing that you will find is that the standards are somewhat process
oriented. It would be difficult to apply these standards to a digital map
produced by ortho-rectification. In theory it should work very well, but
in practice, you may encounter some resistance because of the difficulty
in evaluating the product.

Considerable research in using fractals to describe soil properties has been
in the soils literature in the past several years. Try starting with the
Soil Science Society of America Journal. They have had articles on the use
of fractals to describe aggregation, microrelief, porosity, etc.

Dear list members:

I am a graduate student in the Program of Environmental Sciences at the
Ohio State Unversity, and
I am planning to do my research project in subsistence tropical
agricultural systems (corn-based) in Yucatan and Veracruz, Mexico. I am
especially interested in the dyamics of soil organic matter (SOM),
biological activity and nutrient availability (N) compared under the
traditional slash-and-burn and alternative legume-based agroecosystems. I
intend to take measurements in both, farmers' fields and small replicated
experimental plots under similar conditions. In preliminary soil samples,
spatial variability of organic matter (and other soil properties) is very
large, and I am wondering how to address this problem... Has anybody had
any experience in using fractal distribution as a means of describing the
pattern of soil properties? How useful is it as a statistical tool to make
inferences? Where can I get information on this? What other approaches
would you recommend?

Dear list members :

I am a pHD student working at the Catholic University of
Louvain, in the Agronomy Faculty. My doctoral work concerns
migration of clay particles in stratified unsaturated porous
media in relation with the chemical composition of percolating
water. Numerous models exist for particle migration in saturated
porous media. Does anybody know of a model for particle
migration in the vadose zone ?

I would like to have some comments on clay quantification
after migration from the upper clay layer (containing smectite)
to the sandy layer. I proposed to measure the specific surface
area (EGME). What other techniques would you recommend
for very small quantities ?

I am also planning to realize some thin sections in order to visualize
where the deposits are. The problem is to know how to do this
when you have to cope with unsaturated sand ?

on a global scale. My major concern is on the transport of
organic carbon to the oceans. Within this mailing-list, I have the
following question(s):
Specific mechanical erosion rates are found to be highly variable
amoung the major world river basins. There are a large number
of environmental factors (morphology, climate, vegetation) which
may determine mechanical erosion rates, but how is the nature of
the soils entering here? Is it possible to attribute a specific
erodability index to the major (FAO) soil types, which is
independent from the other environmental patterns and which may
allow the introduction of the soil type in something like the
Universal Soil Loss Equation on a global scale? I just want to
test whether a parametrisation of global soil types may improve
empirical models on mechanical erosion or not. I am aware that
such an approach propably requires to strong simplifications but
propably somebody has an idea about this.

Hi Wolfgang,

as a geologist I'd like to point out, that the transport of matter
(including OM) to the ocean is not only controlled by erosion, but to
a great extend by the relative position and motion of sealevel. It
depends somewhat on the timesscale you're working on.

There is a great bunch of literature of the organic Carbon budget
maybe this helps. As to the soils, there was an Article in GSA-Today
this fall, unfortunately I don't know the exact reference, but it
covers things like climate, erosion, soils and carbon export. You may
also look at:

with an interestt in soil variability.

With regard to use of fractals, I am aware of one paper by
Peter Burrough on this topic. "Multiscale sources of spatial
variation in soil. I. The application of fractal concepts to
nested levels of soil variation".
Journal of Soil Science 34:577-597.

Have you considered using geostatistics and the semivariogram
to model the variability?

John Harrop thought my comment about fractals and geostatistics
was of interest. He asked if I am aware of any work integrating
the two approaches.

No, I am not aware of anyone linking the two, although the
paper by Peter Burrough I refered to shows how the slope of the
semivariogram (log-log plot) is an approximation for the
Hausdorff-Besicovitch dimension D which gives some measure of
short-range vs long-range variation.

Maybe others out there know of some research linking the two.

I have just recently begun my Master's degree in soil biology and
biochemistry. My area of research is the land application of oily food
wastes. Our provincial government has approved this disposal method for
grease trap waste and I'm working with a company to do some research on
it. Unfortunately, there is VERY little literature directly related to my
research. I have had to extend my search to analogous products such as
light fraction petroleums and I'm not confident about doing so.

The way my thinking has been directed I would like to research the
biodegradation (probably via CO2 evolution) of the waste, and examine one
other factor involved. I'm considering the effect of the water content of
the waste on soil-water properties such as infiltration or conductivity.

Anyone out there have any input or experience in the area? Greatly
appreciated. (I'm not 100% comfortable about being on the leading edge,
although it is quite exciting.)

in the measurement of soil pore pressures which build up within the soil
during infiltration and with the redistribution of water following rainfall

"junction" potential between the porous media and the instrument sensor?

To SOILS-L members,

As a new member, I'll follow Jerome's advice and introduce myself. I
know Jerome calls his request voluntary, but I once had him for a TA and
I know what he really means by "voluntary."

I'm a dendrochronology (tree-ring science) graduate student who hopes
to incorporate more field investigations of soils while out sampling trees.
I often see neighboring trees showing different ring-growth patterns for
no apparent reason, i.e., no scars or other damage to either tree. Could
it be differences in soil microsites that cause tree-growth anomalies?

Many tree-ring studies involve forest sites that are quite remote, so
soils techniques that I can consider must be portable and-or not require
large volumes of soil back at the lab. Furthermore, we often study low-
productivity forests, so I may use soils techniques that can offer some
indication of relative productivity, e.g., nutrient status and avaliable
water, at low ends of the scales.

Re: tree rings and soils. Maybe a good place to start would be examining
the water distribution and redistribution patterns of soils supporting unlike
trees. Could be done relatively non-intrusively with a time domain
reflectometer, or if
you're willing to install access tubes, with neutron probe. No soil
samples required for TDR, and only the original samples from the access
tube holes for the neutron probe (not sure about calibration requirements
for neutron probe, but these may be significant if you have no data for
the soil you're working with).

Differences in moisture patterns would
indicate different soil physical properties, which may provide a starting
point. If the water budgets are the same, then you could possibly assume
that chemical or biological differences cause the
different response patterns. But from the sounds of it, I would bet on
water. How do your rings correspond with precip patterns?

Does anyone have information regarding the US EPA's accepatable limits
for soil radon gas?

Do such limits exist?

We seem to have a significant lack of information in Ontario regarding
radon gas. I have one report published by the Ministry of the
Environment and Energy in 1993 which presents field data, but makes no
reference to the acceptability levels of radon gas.

As I recall the U.S. EPA does not set standards for radon in soil
directly, Indirectly, however, there are standards for radon in
drinking water (300 pci/l) and guidence for radon in indoor air (4 pci/l).

You could back calculate to a soil standard from either or both of these if
you make some assumptions about travel time, air movements, transport,
etc.
