I am looking for computer models that could predict ammonia losses
from urine added to the surface of beef cattle feedlots. The model must
have the ability to predict urea hydrolysis and subsequent ammonia

For you information.

The National Academy of Science is divided into 6 divisions. Division
6 is titled "Applied Biology and Agricultural Science." There are two
Sections of this Division. Section 61 is in the area of Animal Science
and Human Nutrition. Until a few days ago Section 62 was known as
Agricultural Sciences. The new name of Section 62 of the National
Academy of Science is "Plant, Soil and Microbial Science."

This is the first time that "soil" has been recognized by the Academy
by listing in a name of a Division or Section.

Dear list members,

Shortly after the start of this list I already made an introduction.
However, up to date I haven't mailed any question or remark, so I'd like to
give a short overview of my work in the hope to get any suggestion and an
answer to the question that I am about to pose.

I work at the faculty of Geography of the Utrecht University on a PhD
research on soil degradtion in agricultural colonization areas in South
Brazil. My intention is to assess the effects of soil degradation brought
about by differing types of land use on the soil water balance.

Therefore I'll be monitoring soil water fluxes during this year in order to
trace differences in for instance infiltration and water retention capacity
due to different types of land management and degradation rates.

Does anyone have suggestions on appropriate field methods to carry out
these measurements? I'm thinking of using the technique of time domain
reflectrometry (TDR) to monitor soil moisture. Has anyone experience with
TDR measurements in subtropical deeply weathered soils (oxisols, ultisolos)
or with the TRIME FM-2 by IMKO?

Can anyone recommend a good refrence book on soil invert.'s? Many of the
standard invert. zoology texts have to much information on aquatic
organisms. I am looking for a text with good descriptions (i.e.,
physical characteristics, habitat, typical food sources, etc.) of the taxa
down to perhaps the genus level.

All ideas welcome.

Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Lao-IRRI project team leader, the Upland Rice
Agronomist leads efforts to develop more productive yet sustainable upland
farming systems with emphasis on soil conservation, soil fertility improvement
and weed control; also collaborates with Lao scientists and technicians in the
design, implementation and analysis of on-station and on-farm experiments. Work
requires a balance of formal research and the development of practical,
farmer-appropriate solutions to major constraints and problems in the uplands.
Effective linkanges with extension and development programs in Laos, and the
IRRI Upland Rice Research Program, must be developed and maintained. Training
of Lao scientists and technicians is an important responsibility of the

Qualifications

Candidates should have a Ph D in Agronomy or related science and at least 5
years of relevant research experience. Previous experience with upland farming
systems in Southeast Asia is desirable.

I have been using the EPA-developed packages GeoEAS and GEOPACK
to do geostatistical analyses (semivariograms/kriging), but when I tried them
on some larger data sets (2,800-28,000 observations) I was frustrated by the
limited size of the data arrays that they can handle. My questions to you:

Does anyone know if GEOPACK has been "adopted" by the private sector and
modified to handle larger data arrays? If so, a commercial source?

What recommendations might you all have for commercially available
geostatistical software under DOS/Windows? E.g., can anyone comment on "GS+",
"KSTAT", or any other program that is capable of doing semivariogram analysis
and kriging?

FYI: I am interested in programs with transparent semivariogram analysis,
i.e., I am seeking capabilities beyond simply "blind" kriging of the type
that is possible in programs like, e.g., "SURFER".

Thanks for your help. I would appreciate email responses directly to me, and
if interest warrants, I'd gladly summarize to Soils-L.

Hi Jeff,

I don't know a particular solution to your problem, but maybe you're
looking in the wrong place. As far as I know, most stat-software under
dos/win is limited to 32k samples or even less (exept win32 or win95
(96?) apps and the like). This is a system-inherent problem. If you could
switch to unix (linux,os/2) you may use up to 4 GB of data. I'm sure there is
public domain software for unix systems to perfom the required task.

I have recently come across the results of a soil erosion model called
SEDCAD+ version 3.1. It is being used to model surface soil erosion thru
a series of subwatersheds. Does anyone have any information about this
model - references, supplier/cost, applications? I'm interested in knowing
whether it models stream bed scour and deposition in addition to soil
erosion, and whether there are other models that do similar things.

I have recently subscibed to soils-l. I am a hydrogeologist working for
the Environmental Protection Agency in Seattle Washington.

I have been lurking here for a while. I am a farmer in Lompoc CA
(Santa Barbara County). Yes, I am above the high tide (so far).

I have a couple of questions. Soil nutrition? Is this the right
place?

I do soil tests preplant. We have typically high levels of K
(potash). I look at the literature and we are above the 100
level. Typically, 300+. I had a soil scientist on call. He said
no K is needed. New soil scientist, and he said that I need 5% of
the exchangeable ions to be K. That meant an additions 800 lbs of
K as a preplant. One says 0 and the other says 800 lbs. Of
course, I will trial, but I am confuse.

I talked to yet another soil scientist, a extention scientist at
UC Davis. He says the 5% was a theory that is under some disrepute
now, and suggests going back to the old threshold numbers.

The advice from UC Davis sounds very good to me and they certainly
should know -- they've conducted a lot of research effort on potassium.
The idea of the percentage as a target is, as the UC Davis scientist
said, an idea from long ago and represents one of the debates in nutrient
management history. Critical levels appear, in most cases, to be a much
more cost-effective approach.

I have 16 years industrial experience. Five years ago I left private
industry and went to work for the Washington State Department of Ecology. I
am a project manager for the cleanup of hazardous waste sites; specializing
(sorta) in chemical fate and transport as well as risk assessment. I am a
chemist.

Sorry, don't have a "burning" question (at least not one that may be
directly applicable to the list).
I have found that using literature values to predict leaching rates is
pretty much a waste of time compared to permeability/leaching tests. Agree?

High tide is a little joke, but it may not be too funny. I am in
the flood plain. The river came within inches of flooding me, but
life goes on. I am at least 24 feet above sea level. There are
several fields with peroid high water table. I have extensive
tile drainage. The Ec can be high, the Ec of the water is high.
1.8, 2.4, some 4.0. High in calcium sulphate. Leeching is
required at times. Drip is used on the sandier ground. I am
getting off track, sorry.

Hi Steve

I thought you got a very poor response to what was a very interesting post
on K. It heightened my suspicion that the Internet is not yet mature enough
to become involved in matters of any depth. Perhaps this will change with
time, as more scientists become acquainted with the power of this
communication medium.

Back to your problem. Soil testing has a long history of promoting the
"critical level" approach that is so simple in itself as to be suspect as a
working principle. It is, of course based on the premise that nutrients
function in isolation, when we know this is not the case in reality. There
are already several reports of anomalous responses to K fertilizer at "high"
soil tests; but of course the critical level idea allows for this by its use
of "probabilities of responses" within the different categories of test
values. The worry is that as we approach 2000AD most of us seem content to
chug along with these archaic concepts and methods instead of contemplating
alternative, newer, sounder systems.

The Rutgers method (Firman Bear) using the basic cation saturation approach
was an early attempt to introduce the idea of nutrient ratios into soil test
interpretations, but the idea of one fixed ratio range, for all soils and
all crops, is probably the major flaw in the method and has limited its
widespread adoption. We, in New Zealand, have the added problem of variable
charge (hence variable measured CEC) to contend with, especially on volcanic
soils and soils of markedly different organic matter contents.

More recently Malcolm Sumner's DRIS approach has attempted to take nutrient
ratios into account, and quite successfully it seems. Such new methods mount
a challenge to the single nutrient approach and appear to offer a better
fundamental rationale for interpretations of soil and plant testing methods.
It takes time, however, for new ideas to bed down in Soil Science, as in
other fields, especially when the textbooks are full of the critical level
idea, and students are probably still being taught the "tried and true"
earlier concepts. And we have few proven alternatives available at this
time, so that further limits our options.

It is, of course, foolhardy to attempt to devise fertilizer recommendations
solely on the basis of any soil test or interpretation method. There are so
many other factors that need to be taken into consideration, and these can
really only be sorted out in the paddock. No-one can make proper
recommendations at a distance.

The dilemna that you have discovered stems from the fact that you are
dealing with the "poles" of soil test interpretation (if not different soil
test methods as well). It would not be possible, given the amount of
information that you have provided to say which method is giving the best
advice. It IS possible to get a response to K with some crops even at HIGH
SOIL TEST values, and this has been reported on several occasions. So you
should not be put off by the recommendation to use K when the soil test
appears already adequate.

On the broader aspect of which is the best method; they both have their
strong and weak points. What is clearly required is some system that takes
into account the fact that plants need a certain AMOUNT of nutrients (the
crtical level approach) YET nutrients are known to interact with one another
(Basic cation saturation idea)ie a hybrid of the two extremes. Why these two
concepts cannot be combined into one comprehensive system is not so easy to
determine. But in my opinion they should be if we are to make any further
progress in this field.

This general area is probably one that could be further explored by
subscribers to this list. Perhaps my comments might serve to spark such a
discussion.

PS One thing I find difficult to understand from your figures, is that if
the soil test is high on the normal scale, and yet you need to add
800lbs/acre of K (or K2O?) to get to 5% saturation of CEC there would seem
to be a major discrepancy in the tests for either CEC or exchangeable K
between the two labs (?); which is in itself another problem

The important thing for a producer is to find soil test calibration for soils a
nd crops near the location or with similiar soils and climate. Field trials on
various soil test levels with various rates (not all on the same field) would
show if a response is probable. There is no one solution, reponse is always po
ssible. Unless you have your own data you have to go with the probabilities. Y
ou can play around and put some strips out this year to see. For Nebraska the
soil test levels would indicate low probability of response, but we have K in o
ur subsoil.

Jarosite is an iron sulfate mineral formed by the oxidation of
sulfide-bearing materials (particularly pyrite). This is a generalized
description of the depositional environments:

First, the iron sulfide minerals are formed in a reduced environment and
require the presence of sulfates, iron minerals, sulfate-reducing bacteria,
an organic source of energy, and anaerobic environment. Such an environment
could be found in tidal marsh soils. Dredge materials from the Chesapeake
Bay also contain reduce iron sulfides (as a present day example).

For jarosite to form, the reduced materials have to be exposed to an
oxidizing environment. This can occur when tidal marshes are drained, dredge
material is placed on the surface, or reduced overburden and coal materials
that formed in such an environment are brought to the surface.

When the sulfide-bearing materials are oxidized, sulfuric acid is produced
and the pH drops drastically (to less than 3.5). If the Eh is high enough,
jarosite can precipitate. It forms a "straw"- colored coating. I've seen
this in "ripened" dredge materials and in acid minesoils.

Dr. Del Fanning of the University of Maryland has looked extensively at
jarosite in soils. Two sources of information that may be of use to you are:

Fanning and Fanning. 1989. Soil Morphology, Genesis, and Classification.
John Wiley and Sons.

As for your second question:

I remember some research being done on this when I was working on mine
reclamation and acid mine drainage at West Virginia University. This was a
few years ago and my memory cells are rusty. You may want to contact Dr.

I am a hydrogeologist working in the State of New Jersey (USA). My projects
include the remediation of contaminated ground water and soils. As you may
know, New Jersey is one of the most heavily industrialized states in the
country. Therefore, there are many impacted areas which are in dire need of
cleanup. Unfortunately, the environmental regulations have become lax and
the "cleanup zest" of the 1980s has lost its steam.

I am very interested in doing work overseas, especially in areas such as
Eastern Europe. Therefore, please contact me if you know of any contacts or
