Wow!!! A question I can contribute to!

The relationship, when there is one, is a secondary effect. That is to
say,
the K/Th/U imagery will show areas that fit an exploration model that
favours
some kind(s) of mineral deposit(s). One of the models used here in the
past
few years has been looking for K alteration associated with a porphyry
intrusion. Cu-Au deposits would then be the exploration target, although
there
could also be associated veins adjacent to the porphyry. Radiometrics have
been shown to be quite good at mapping certain aspects of
litho-geochemistry,
not just alteration. Therefore, any mapping that can lead you to a good
prospective area may be able to receive some support from radiometrics.
I'm sorry if this is too general for you. If you have more specific models
in mind please describe them. We have used these methods in Canadian and
various tropical climates where the method seemed to be able to 'see'
through jungle. The method was popular in the late seventies and seems
to be making a come-back recently. With PC image-processing being
easily available some quite spectacular result can be generated on
'common' office machines.

A good place to start reading would be in Geol Surv of Canada Paper 89-9
Statistical Applications in the Earth Sciences ed F.P. Agterberg and
G.F. Bonham-Carter

There is also a good publication by the Northwest Mining Association, but
you may have trouble getting that where you are. Please e-mail me if you
need nore details on the references.

At the moment I am working at the Escuela Tecnica Superior de Ingenieria
Agraria de la Universidad de Lerida. I am doing soil surveying on an area around
Lerida (160 Km west of Barcelona),as Field Soil Scientist.
My main interest areas, at the moment are:

-The application of GIS in Soil Surveying. The use of DEMs to classify landscape
shapes, and relations with soil type.

-The presentation of Soil Survey data in digital format and the developing of
a Soil's database.

-The applications of GIS, using Soil Survey data in agricultural and non
agricultural purposes.

I have not any burning question (at the moment) but a colleague of mine is working on agronomic valorization of municipal waste composts through their addition to soils under semiarid or Mediterranean conditions. One of the key issues concerning yearly hi
h application rates of compost is the knowledge of its mineralization rate and what percentage of the total amount applied reamins as soil organic matter several years after its disposal and thorough mixing.
Should municipal waste compost, when applied yearly at high rates, be considered and organic amendment or should it be regarded as a fertilizer? Is it sound to seek to increase soil organic matter content in soils under semiarid conditions?Wouldn't that b
a chemical nitrogen time bomb in the soil?
We'd like to discuss this and we'd appreciate some references dealing specifically with this approaches under semiarid or Mediterranean conditions.

In Utah we've utilized biosolid on arid (salt desert shrub veg
community) reclamation projects. I'm sure our one time application
rates (10-15 T/acre) are substantially lower than what you are
applying. There has been alot of concern expressed that even these
low rates will encourage weed proliferation and induce unusually high
soil fertility status which may be detrimental to the establishment
of native species. Time will tell. The majority of the mine
soil/spoil we have used as a plant growth medium are quite
"droughty", saline/sodic. Infiltration rate in some instances are
extremely low. Thus any source of organic matter which may increase
soil structure is benefitial. However biolsolid aplication rates
must be tempered by the desired for increased O.M. and the fear of
what you refered to as "the nutrient time bomb". As far as lit
references focusing on the O.M. additions aforded by biosolid
application i'M limitted to a focus on Mine Reclamation. However if
you require more info I'll see what I can drum up!!

I have no information about soil reclamation using compost to rid the soil
of oil spills. Since addition of compost increases the populations of
microorganisms and enhances biological activity in the soil, it seems application of compost is a sound way to accelerate oil decomposition in the soil.
I think you shoulg gett the book entitled "Science and engineering of
composting" from Ohio State University (editors: Hoitink and Keener)
published in 1993. There you can find clues to contact scientists in
the USA dealing with compost applications to soils.
One of my specific interests now is maximum compost application rates
in soils under semiarid conditions, and the burning question "nutrient

Maybe something about wind erosion: Bare, disturbed, loose soil versus
soils with live grass and dead stems across surface. Preparation might
consist of turning on a fan after students come in. Around here we get
a lot of dust blowing off of construction sites. Keeping some kind of
vegetation or stubble cover would probably reduce wind erosion and urban
dust. Similarly keeping some kind of cover on harvested fields helps
control all types of erosion. Wetting the soil surface would seem to
help, but it is hard to keep it wet under windy conditions.

Our reclamation geologist is seeking information specifically on
composting woody debris cleared from a mine site. He's interested in
alternatives to burning (the current common practice)--he wants to learn
if it's feasible to chip the smaller woody debris, compost it, amend it,
and reapply it to the soil in order to revegetate the site. I've come
across an article in _Biocycle_ by Gary Vodehnal, but surely there's more?

You might try Dr. Fred Madison or Dr. Emmet Schulte at the University of
Wisconsin, Madison. They have both spent time in the Gambia in the last

I have 900oC in mind for the working temperature in lime kilns, and in my
lab manual, I read "decomposition of CaCO3 from 430 to 1100oC" in the
comments on the loss on ignition procedure.

This is absolute correct, except for the temperature at atmospheric
pressure. In the system CaO-CO2 at atmospheric pressure CO2 and CaCO3
(Calcite) only coexist until approximate 800 degrees C (HARKER & TUTTLE,
1955). After this temperature the decarbonatisation begins (CaCO3 -> CaO + CO2).
If you look at higher pressure you have the effect of a stabilisation of
calcite. This means you need a higher temperature to decarbonate the
calcite. At 1240 degrees C and 40 bars there the incongruent melting of
calcite begins (IRVING & WYLLIE 1973, Melting relationships in CaO-CO2 and
MgO-CO2 to 36 kilobars with comments on CO2 in the mantle. Earth Planet.
Sci. Letters v 20: 220-225). At this point you have a melt besides CO2.
And if you look at a pressure up from 10 kbars then you have the occurence
of an pressure independent incongruent melting at 1300 degrees C (WYLLIE &
BOETTCHER 1969, Liquidus phase relationships in the system CaO-CO2-H2O to 40
kilobars pressure with petrological applications. Am. J. Sci. v 267 A: 489-508).

GS+/386 (PC) from Gamma Design Software (phone: 616-685-9011; fax:
616-685-9590) MAY be able to handle this many records: the spec's say it can
read > 125,000, and the documentation indicates that they may be able to
expand the software to handle more. The speed at which it will analyze this
number of records is a consideration, however: I have used it to do
semivariogram analysis on a data set with about 25,000 records which took
about 5 hours on a Pentium 66 with 16 MB of RAM. (Caveat: I've had this
software for about two weeks. It is a DOS program and I can't get it to run
in a Window as they claim it should [runs fine under DOS], and I have had
some trouble printing one kind of results screen. They have yet to respond
to my fax and phone call for technical assistance!)

(VARIOWIN 2.1 (PC) is available at no cost and can be retrieved via
anonymous ftp from the server ulimin1.unil.ch (130.223.104.13) and from the
server eliot.unil.ch (130.223.32.6), where the archive file variowin.zip is
stored in the directory /pub/geostat. According to the documentation it
will handle an unlimited number of observations, dependent only on your PC's
RAM up to an addressable limit of 256 MB. However, based on its pair
comparison algorithm and output format, my calculations indicate that it can
handle only about 5657 observations with 256 MB of RAM.)

GeoEAS and GEOPACK, both EPA developed, PC-based [there is a UNIX version of
GeoEAS available from Stanford], can not currently handle this many records
(at least in the PC versions).

GSLIB is a fortran geostatistical library that is recommended by many. I
have no personal experience with it and do not know it's data limitations.

I don't want to sound petty, but I'm not sure that the "address of a
publisher" is proper material for a soils information exchange group. I'm
sure each of us gets barraged with daily information requests that require
prioritizing, but I request that each subscriber carefully considers the
most efficient way of obtaining the desired information. Addresses of
publishers (for example) are easily obtained with a 30-second phone call and
don't require asking thousands of soil experts. This applies to many other
requests for information that routinely come over the net.

I observe the daily attrition rate among current subscribers who are
dropping out. I suspect this type of trivial request is one reason why
people soon loose interest. Let's try to use the expertise and time of the
remaining members in a productive way. Thanks. Now I've got that out of my
system!

i wholeheartedly agree with rb mikkelsen's message about proper
material for soil information exchange group.

most other lists i have participated in have this same problem and
the end result is user attrition. i believe list users should
develop a set of protocols that demonstrate courteous use of the
network and of other people's time.

some suggestions for that list:

1. carefully consider whether a reply to the entire group is
warranted or should the reply only go to the person posting the
question.

2. do not include commented out messages unless absolutely necessary
for understanding of the reply. most of the time only a small part
of the original message, if any at all, needs to be included. it may
take a little extra time to edit out the bulk of the text, but then
that saves everyone else from having to read it.

3. be as descriptive as possible on the subject line in order to
help users decide if they want to bother reading the message.

4. i would add rob's comment about making sure that items posted to
the list are relevant and worth the time of the hundreds of people
who may end up reading them.

i comments concerning this list (personally or on the server), as
well as additional suggestions.

My name is Jock Churchman. I am a soil clay mineralogist/surface chemist.

I have been following the correspondence on this list for some time now.
When I first subscribed, I gave no more than my name. Now that I have found
a few spare moments, I want to introduce myself. My main current research
interests, with associated burning questions are:

1. Use and modification of clays to adsorb organic materials.
Some clays, beside expandable clays, have considerable micro- or
meso-porosity. Examples are halloysite and palygorskite. Can the pores in
these clays be used to hold/trap large organic molecules? I wonder if there
are analogies with zeolites, which hold very small molecules (with much
smaller pores)? Can these clays be modified to enhance their uptake of
organic molecules?

2. Microstructure of soils.
Do either polycations (Fe, Al and Ca)and their oxides and hydroxides or
organic matter make the major contribution to the stabilisation of soil
microaggregates? How do the means of stabilisation differ with soil type?
How are they affected by agricultural practices e.g. cultivation?

3. Sodicity.
To what extent can sodic soils be ameliorated simply by the addition of
organic matter? Is there a mimimum level of sodicity e.g. ESP below which
additions of organic matter have a net negative effect on the structure of
sodic soils?

In this regard, I was interested in the comment by Henry Sauer on 2 Feb.
about the use of biosolids on saline/sodic mine spoil. Infiltration rates
were smetimes slow (on the sodic soils?). He states "any source of organic
matter which may improve soil structure is beneficial". This would be true,
but added organic matter could have a negative effect if sodicity is too
high. In this case, organic matter acts as a dispersant and hence makes
infiltration even more difficult.

Finally, I look forward to useful information and debate on this branch of
the Internet. I thought Max Turner, among others, set a good example with
his well-informed comments on 22 January. Good on you, Max!

My name's Jon Brandt and I work for the Railroad Commission of Texas -
in the AML (Abandoned Mine Land) section. My experience includes
surface mine reclamation (liming acid minesoils, revegetation),
erosion control, and soil fertility.

I am currently working on several reclamation projects that have problems
with elevated electrical conductivity and SAR levels (in combination with
high saturation percentages). We are using a combination of halophytic
plants and additions of organic matter (hay mulch) to successfully establish
vegetation at these sites. In cases where the EC or SAR is too high
(16 or 20, respectively), we bring in several feet of suitable cover material.
However, I have heard of several companies that claim they have products that
can be applied to remediate saline and/or sodic soils. These might provide
an alternative to hauling in thousands of cubic yards of soil. I suspect
the products essentially provide a calcium source to displace sodium ions or
are surfactants. Does anyone have experience with these chemicals?

Dear Subscribers,

I would like to make a few comments regarding the recent
discussion about the content and format of the SOILS-L List. I
hope my comments will quell a prolonged debate of this matter
which in my opinion is not a discussion related to soil science.
I personally do not feel that the request
for the address of publishers of a soil science related journal
was out of line with the intent of this list. I began this list
for facilitating the exchange of both information and ideas
regarding soil science and that request fits in this category. It
is possible that some bandwidth could be saved by persons
replying directly to the requester rather than to the discussion
list. However, others on the list might also like to know the
answer to the same question.
I don't believe that the list is losing members as was suggested by
one subscriber because of this type of discussion. As of this morning,
there are 477 persons subscribed to SOILS-L and this number
tends to increase steadily. I would like subscribers to keep in
mind that with the rapid expansion of the Internet, many new
users who are unfamiliar with the mechanics of such things as mail
lists are exploring what information is available in their areas
of interest. Sometimes these new users find that the list is not
to their liking. Unfortunately, they are not clear as to how to
unsubscribe from the list and so we see the result as an
erroneous post to the discussion list.
Here I can try to be of assistance by providing better
documentation in the notification file which I realize is
lacking. I think the suggestions of mail list etiquette were on
target and I will try to include these ideas in a revised
notification message. Nevertheless, there will always be some
people who just don't get it even with expanded documentation.
Therefore, please try to let this problem slide and know that I
always reply to individuals who are having problems with the list
on a personal basis.
My viewpoint regarding SOILS-L is that almost anything
goes as long as it pertains to soil science. If bandwidth becomes
a problem then one can switch to the digested format or we can
begin to split out lists pertaining to sub-topics of interest. In
fact, I will post an advertisement for SOIL-CHEM in another
message. I feel that the broad spectrum of SOILS-L will always
have a place in the Internet community of soil scientists.
I request patience on the part of SOILS-L subscribers. I
welcome both 'Real' discussions of soil science topics as well as
simple resource questions. Facilitating the exchange of
information is what this list is about. I hope to see more of it.
Anyone wishing to debate my stance should contact me personally
at the address below. Thank you for your cooperation and input.

I am a soil chemist/microbiologist currently looking at
hydrocarbon biodegradation in soil and would appreciate some help
with a "burning question".

The particular soil we have been investigating has a 4% (g/g)
total petroleum hydrocarbon concentration which ranges from C10
to C40 hydrocarbons. We have been using a simple (and rather
crude) index method based on gas chromatography analyses (without
mass spec, unfortunately) to determine biodegradation. The
method is based on the relative decrease in concentrations of
compounds with shorter GC retention times than a C20 alkane
marker as compared to those with longer GC retention times.
Although I believe a C30 alkane to be a better cutoff point for
this purpose, there are not enough compounds in the >C30 region
to make use of this cutoff point. We have found the index to be
a relatively good indicator of biodegradation and is more
sensitive than total hydrocarbon concentration determinations.
What we have found is that the concentration relative to the >C20 hydrocarbons as biodegradation
progresses. (Of course one has to account for washout of the
lower hydrocarbons.)

Some researchers at another institution have recently tested this
method and have found the opposite i.e. the concentrations of
<C20 hydrocarbons increased relative to the >C20 hydrocarbons.
They claim this to occur due to the catabolism of larger
hydrocarbons with subsequent increase of lower hydrocarbons.
Although this is true these lower hydrocarbons should be more
rapidly degraded than they are produced. Their results,
therefore, imply that the microbial degradation of higher
hydrocarbons occurs at a faster rate than degradation of lower
carbons - which seems almost impossible. Can anyone give some
advice on this matter?
