SBERRY: I can help you with a few of your questions:

1. PCBs are polychlorinated biphenyls. There are several hundred isomers
of this compound.

2. Organic waste is a very general term for any waste material of an
organic nature. There is no way one could write a chemical formula for it.
It includes such things as livestock manure and sewage sludge among hundreds
of other substances. The only common things in a chemical formula would be
that they contain C atoms and H atoms. These atoms would occur in a variety
of quantities within the compounds.

3. Adhesion is the attraction of unlike substances. Cohesion is the
attraction of like substances. In the soil, water attracts soil particles
and soil particles attract water molecules. This is adhesion. Water
molecules attract each other. This is cohesion.

4. I don't know what the chemical formula for Super Glue is.

5. The sodium silicate and Na2SiO3 may be one and the same. I don't know
these things off the top of my head. If I have a chance and if someone else
on the list does not answer them for you, I will do some checking and get
back to you.

REQUEST FOR QUALIFICATIONS (Project 94-01-78)
Colorado Water Historian

The Colorado Water Education Foundation (CWEF) has received an Historic Fund
grant from the Colorado Historical Society to research and inventory
significant pre-historic and historic Colorado water sites/events. This
research is expected to include the when, where, as well as the who, what,
how and why for the purpose of historic preservation and/or identification.

This project will begin in May of 1995, and will conclude in May of 1996
with the presentation to the Colorado Historical Society of a project final
report, a bibliography, and a water history map in poster format.

CWEF is requesting a letter of interest and qualifications from historians
interested in the position of Colorado Water Historian, who will guide and
coordinate the efforts of a state-wide Water History Advisory Committee
(WHAN) , and seven regional Water History Advisory Committees. While the
regional WHAN's are expected to identify and prioritize major and
significant water sites/events to be included in the project, the Colorado
Water Historian will need to verify accuracy, and write brief descriptions
of each. The Historian also will be expected to do original state-wide
research to assure that regional WHAN's have exhausted all significant
events/sites related to Colorado water. Video and audio histories are
anticipated where applicable.

The Colorado Water Historian is expected to spend 9 and 1/2 man months on the
project, and to supervise an assistant who is expected to spend approximately
four months on the project. Part-time secretarial assistance will be
available.

The minimum professional qualifications are a bachelor's degree in history or
closely related field plus one of the following 1) at least two years of
full-time experience in research, writing, teaching, interpretation, or
other demonstrable professional activity with an academic institution,
historic organization or agency, museum, or other professional institution,
or 2) substantial contribution through research and publication to the body
of scholarly knowledge in the field of history. An emphasis on Colorado
history and computer expertise are desired, as well as an ability to write
for the ordinary citizen and/or school student.

Letters of interest and qualifications should be sent, by April 26, to CWEF
in care of the following address. Interviews will be conducted by the CWEF
Trustee Water History Committee in time to designate the Colorado Water
Historian by, May 25, 1995.

This is my first posting, so I will take the opportunity to introduce
myself. My name is Damian Herrick. I am a geoscience major at Hobart and
William Smith Colleges in Geneva, NY. Currently, my main interest is in
hydrology, and issues pertaining to groundwater contamination. I plan on
graduating in June, 1997, with a Bachelor of Science. I also plan to minor
in chemistry.
Aside from an introduction, I also would like to ask anyone out
there who might know of any internships available in the field of
groundwater remediation. Geographically, I am hoping to find on in the
Philadephia-Delaware-SE Pennsylvania- South New Jersey area. I have a
place to stay there, and thus it would be advantageous to relocate there.
However, I'll take what is available, and find a way to make it work. I
will be available beginning August 15, 1995, and can work either until
the end of 1995, or until March 15, 1996. I am more than willing to post a
copy of my resume and transcript to anyone who might need to know more
about me in considering my qualifications.
I hope that I have not overstepped a line of etiquette, but I am
having trouble locating a program at home (Binghamton, NY), and I don't
know where to start for the Philadelphia area. I hope someone out there

I am a new subscriber. My name is Michael Engel. Currently I am senior at the
University of Wisconsin- Green Bay studying Plant Biology and Environmental
Science. I am primarily interested in agricultural soil
degradtion. I plan to further my education (after a few years of 'real world
experience') by studying sustainable agriculture.

At the UWGB campus we have a set of successional plots that I am studying for
soil ecology. I am trying to determine how the soil is altered with the
removal of agriculture disturbance, succession, and time. As of yet my efforts
to find literature regarding this topic have been somewhat futile.

My burning question of introduction is can anyone point me towards some sources
of information on the effects of succession or fallowness on soil ecology?

More specifically, I read a summary of the Soil and Water Conservation
Society's Conference Report that stated soil productivity increases using CRP
land. Can anyone pinpoint this conclusion to an author or even a page number
within the report? I don't have the report and the Society can't give me any
additional information unless I can tell them where to look in the report.

Alan,
Probably your most cost-effective means of remediation for lead in soils,
particularly in larger volumes, is in-, or ex-situ stabilization with
portland cement. There are numerous abatement contracting firms throughout
the country that perform this work.

The company I deal with here in New England has a modular processor for
ex-situ stabilization on-site; they have a capacity of up to 800 tons soil,
dry weight, per day. Obviously, to make a sound and cost-effective decision,
you must weigh all of your fixed and variable site characterization factors.

I will be off-line until April 27, but if you are still in need of additional

Greetings to all:

I would like to hear if anyone is successfully using GPS equipment (<$700
range) for location of soil sampling sites. Currently, I am working on a 187
acre site where we would like to determine locations within +/- 10 ft. Survey
control stations are available but locating from them is going to run up costs
considerably due to the man-hours involved. Any time I've got to bring a
crew on-site, the costs really run up quickly. As many of you know, the
hourly wage is the least of it. If I could use a GPS at the sampling site,
the information could then be transferred to the final map via AutoCad.

I would be interested in hearing from not only those who have successfully
used GPS, but from those who have not used it successfully. Regarding
equipment costs, the break point seems to be about $700 with price then
jumping to the $4-5,000 range; last just not doable.

BTW, nice to be back on the list. Had a system crash trying to add
a new hard drive and by the time things were again up and the paying work

My name is Philip Small. I am working as a consulting soil scientist throughout
the western USA but especially in central Washington State. My areas of
expertise are wetlands, land application of both process water and solids, and
site assessment (i.e. paralegal services!) for property purchasers. I started
my career in California (UC Davis. BS '79) doing septic site assessments in the
winter and soil survey contracts during the summer. I am a NSCSS registered
professional soil scientist, and serve as chair on two NSCSS committees:
Business and Marketing, and Technical Advisory.

I am new to the net but not new to recognizing a good thing when I see it.
IMHO, soils-l is a vital resource that _all_ soil scientists need to subscribe
to. My "Burning Question" on which I hope to elicit some discussion from you all
is:

Where do we go on the internet to discuss soil science related issues unrelated
to research if not right here? This is not a rhetorical question. The answers I
get from you will be summarized and communicated back to the NSCSS membership.

The profession needs a forum for soil scientists to discuss some of the more
"social" issues challenging our profession: <>the future of the profession in
the USA in view of the changed political climate here <>Interactions of
consultants (NSCSS) with SSSA. <>Connecting scarce jobs with graduates.
<>Ethics, liability, responsibility in the field. <>Interactions with other
professions (geologists, engineers) <>Certification of consulting soil
scientists in the USA. <>Peer review and technical support for isolated soil
scientists. <>The impact on public regard for the soils profession effected by
retired or academic individuals charging below market rates for consulting
services. <> Curriculum needs, people and business skills needed to excel in an

individual needs for funding and business income.

Dear soil scientists,

During my experiments, I have had treatments which have caused relatively
high concentrations of KCl extractable ammonium to occur (50-70 ug/g soil
vs. 2-6 ug/g).

Does anyone know of specific organisms (plants, nematodes, protozoa,
microbes) or soil processes that would be effected (adversely or otherwise)
by such levels of NH4+?

I would greatly appreciate any comments to me via email.

Dear Mark,

Ammonium toxicity is well known for the cultivated mushroom (was at one
time thought to be only applicable to ammonia but the ion is now implicated).
You do not state the pH of your soils but if alkaline there is the
possibility of inhibition of the second stage of nitrification with the
appearance of nitrite but you would probably need a higher ammonium level
than you have at present.
