Dear readers of rec.food.cooking and rec.gardens,

I would like to propose a new newsgroup devoted to
the fine art of canning, freezing, pickling, dehydrating,
smoking, potting, and just plain "putting up" of
foodstuffs.

I believe that there is enough interest, due to inter-
mittant canning posts, the flavored oil and flavored
vinegar questions, the smoker and dehydrator threads.
In rec.gardens, I have noticed many more postings on
herb, tomato, and berry growing questions; by extension,
come fall both rec.food.cooking and rec.gardens should
get more posts on how to preserve the garden bounty.

This has not been posted on either news.groups or
news.announce.newgroups. I just propose a little
prediscussion. Since it takes several months to
create a new, big 7 newsgroup, timeliness is important.

Please direct followup discussion to rec.food.cooking
for neatness sake.

I think the idea of a group discussing preserving food is great. But I
had two points I thought could usefully be addressed.

- Will it _only_ be edible products? Herb growers (who live in
rec.gardens) may want to discuss drying non-edible (or even poisonous)
plants, for medicinal, aromatic uses or for dried arrangement.

- Is preservation the right word? Would preserving be better? I
would've thought preservation is what one would do with rare foods,
preserving seemes slightly better to me.

I've cross-posted this to rec.gardens and rec.food.cooking in
this post, because other herb growers may want a say. But a reminder
that this discussion lives in rec.food.cooking, so direct follow-ups
appropriately.

Anita
