This file is HLP_HPRT.TXT - from ..\DNA-MUTATIONS\HPRT. This files in this subdirectory hold (i) release 3 of the database itself and (ii) the program for analysis of the database that is described in Mutation Research. ********************************************************************** A PASSWORD IS REQUIRED TO USE THE ANALYZE.EXE PROGRAM. YOUR PASSWORD CAN BE OBTAINED BY CONTACTING THE SOFTWARE DEVELOPER. EMAIL is the preferred method of correspondence. EMAIL: cariello@sunsite.unc.edu MAIL: Neal Cariello 323 Old Fox Trail Durham, NC 27713 USA ********************************************************************** PLEASE NOTE THAT RELEASE 3 OF THE DATABASE ITSELF IS INCLUDED WITH THE COMPRESSED FILES IN ..\cariello\hprt\analyze. IT IS NOT NECESSARY TO TAKE THE DATABASE ITSELF AS A SEPARATE FILE. ********************************************************************** The files are compressed to speed up transfer time via FTP, and to save disk space when sending floppy disks. The files ending in "EXE" are self- extracting archives. This means when you execute them (by typing their names) many files will "pop out", and you will have quite a few files after uncompression. You will need about 5M of free disk space to install the programs. There are three files in ..\CARIELLO\HPRT\ANALYZE: HLP_HPRT.TXT - this file. 1HPRT.EXE - compressed, self-extracting archive number 1. 2HPRT.EXE - compressed, self-extracting archive number 2. If you got these files via the INTERNET using FTP and they don't work properly (typically they will not uncompress), you probably did not transfer the files correctly. These files are BINARY and must be transferred as such. Please see your system manager for details about binary FTP, I cannot help you at my end with your file transfers. To run this program, you will need an IBM-compatible machine running MS-DOS with a 386 or greater processor. The program will not even load on a 286. At least 4 MB of RAM are needed, otherwise you will get a pesky "OUT OF MEMORY" error with some routines. A standard VGA monitor and card are required (640 x 480 resolution). Users are strongly urged to use this program with a mouse, I guarantee, you will hate this program without a mouse. Some settings in your CONFIG.SYS file must be changed to: FILES=50 BUFFERS=20 (greater than 50 FILES or greater the 20 BUFFERS is OK) KNOWN PROBLEMS: Gateway 2000 machines running an ATI graphics card with a local bus show unstable behavior after running a graphics routine. A BIOS upgrade is available from Gateway or from myself. May I suggest: 1) Make a directory on the hard disk called ANALYZE (use the DOS MD command). 2) Change the current directory to C:\ANALYZE by entering: CD C:\ANALYZE 3) Copy all three files to the C:\ANALYZE subdirectory (use the DOS COPY command). 4) Unpack the compressed files by entering: 1HPRT 2HPRT 5) The following files should be present after uncompressing: 00read.me2 this file analyze.exe the main program config.fp configuration file for ANALYZE.EXE program dge0906.stx font dge1106.stx font dge1108.stx font dge1608.stx font dge1609.stx font driver2.plb printer support foxuser.dbf used by ANALYZE.EXE to determine state of last session foxuser.fpt used by ANALYZE.EXE to determine state of last session genpd.app printer support help_anl.dbf on-line help help_anl.fpt on-line help help_anl.tx1 ASCII version (text) of on-line help without line breaks help_anl.tx2 ASCII version (text) of on-line help with line breaks hg-fp.exe mutational spectra calculation program hh_user.dbf used by ANALYZE.EXE to determine state of last session hh_user.fpt used by ANALYZE.EXE to determine state of last session humhprt.cdx index for the HPRT database humhprt.dbf the HPRT database (release 3) rpt-col.frt sample report, column format rpt-col.frx sample report, column format rpt-row.frt sample report, row format rpt-row.frx sample report, row format 5) After decompressing the files 1HPRT.EXE and 2HPRT.EXE, they should be deleted from the hard disk. Please keep a copy of the compressed files on floppy disks in case something bad happens. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- The program is started by entering: ANALYZE On-line help is obtained by using the F1 key, or by selecting OPTIONS\HELP from the main menu. Please note that text versions of the on-line help are provided: help_anl.tx1 (without line breaks) and help_anl.tx2 (with line breaks). Either file can be printed out and used as a manual. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Digitally yours, Neal Cariello ====================================================================== ********************************************************************** PLEASE NOTE THAT RELEASE 3 OF THE DATABASE ITSELF IS INCLUDED WITH THE FILES IN THIS DIRECTORY.
