12 Jan 98 ------------------------------------------------ YOU WILL NEED THIS INFORMATION LATER, BE SURE TO SAVE THIS FILE TO DISK (use FILE/SAVE on your browser) ------------------------------------------------ THIS FILE HAS IMPORTANT SETUP INFORMATION FOR INSTALLING THE LACI DATABASE AND SOFTWARE INSTRUCTIONS ------------------------------------------------ NOTE THAT THERE IS A MINI-MANUAL FOR USE OF THE LACI SOFTWARE. IT IS THE FILE 'USER_MAN.DOC' AND WILL BE PRESENT AFTER INSTALLATION. ------------------------------------------------ The software runs on IBM-compatible PCs with Microsoft Windows. You should have: - this file - LACI_1.EXE 1,240,364 bytes - LACI_2.EXE 1,101,949 bytes - LACI_3.EXE 1,357,400 bytes - LACI_4.EXE 1,421,507 bytes - LACI_5.EXE 1,395,769 bytes - LACI_6.EXE 1,395,073 bytes - LACI_7.EXE 246,123 bytes Please look at the size of your files. On occasion, the file transfer will not be complete and you may end up with a truncated file. If this occurs, you will generally get an error like "Run PKZipFix" if you try and uncompress the file. 1. INSTALLING THE PROGRAM General Information The Microsoft 32-bit library, Win32s, must be installed to run the program using Windows 3.1 or 3.11. The program will not start unless the Win32s library is present. See below for details on installing the library. Software is getting bigger and the LacI software is no exception. You will need about 18M of free disk space to install the program. 8M of RAM is a minimum requirement, performance will be less than optimal with less than 16M of RAM. To run this program, you will need an IBM- compatible machine running Microsoft windows 3.1, 3.11, Windows 95 or Windows NT. The program can be run on a standard VGA monitor (640 x 480 resolution), however, higher screen resolutions are recommended (either 800 x 600 or 1024 x 768). Some settings in your CONFIG.SYS file (Win 3.1) should be changed to: FILES=70 BUFFERS=40 (greater than 70 FILES or greater the 40 BUFFERS is OK). If SHARE.EXE is called from your AUTOEXEC.BAT (Win 3.1) file, then the parameters should be: SHARE.EXE /F:4098 /L:1024 (values greater than these are OK). You will need to re-boot the computer for these changes to be effective. -------------------------------------------------- INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE LACI PROGRAM It is a wise idea to keep a backup copy of the LACI files (LACI_1.EXE, LACI_2.EXE, etc) in case something goes horribly wrong. 1. If the program was obtained through the postal mail from the author, the disks are ready to use. Insert the first LacI disk and execute SETUP.EXE from the Windows File Manager. Go to step 3. 2. If the program was obtained from the Internet, there are a series of 7 compressed files (LacI_1.EXE through LacI_7.EXE). Each file is a self-extracting archive that contains many files. These files MUST BE EXTRACTED as outlined below. 2.1 Create a temporary directory, for example, C:\TEMP or C:\JUNK 2.2 Create 7 subdirectories in the temporary directory created in step 2.1 named DISK1, DISK2, DISK3, DISK4, DISK5, DISK6 and DISK7. You MUST name the subdirectories as indicated. When done you should have (for example): C:\TEMP\DISK1, C:\TEMP\DISK2, etc. through C:\TEMP\DISK7. 2.3 Copy each LacI file to its RESPECTIVE subdirectory. LacI_1.EXE is copied to the subdirectory C:\TEMP\DISK1, LacI_2.EXE is copied to C:\TEMP\DISK2, etc. Each LacI file MUST BE IN THE PROPER SUBDIRECTORY. 2.4 Uncompress each EXE file by executing the program. In Windows, double-click on LacI_1.EXE using the Program Manager or Explorer. Then double-click on LacI_2.EXE, LacI_3.EXE through LacI_7.EXE to uncompress each file. Each LacI_n.EXE file must be uncompressed in its own subdirectory. LacI_1.EXE must be uncompressed in C:\TEMP\DISK1, for example. If you are running out of disk space, the LacI_1.EXE through LacI_7.EXE files can be deleted after uncompressing them. 2.5 Execute the SETUP.EXE file in the DISK1 subdirectory from Windows. Double-click on the SETUP.EXE file, which will be in C:\TEMP\DISK1, for example. 3. Files present after installation can be found in the file FILES.LST. 4. The program is started by double-clicking on the icon. 5. If the program works OK, delete all files from the temporary subdirectory created to install the program (for example, C:\TEMP). On-line help is obtained by using the F1 key, or by selecting OPTIONS\HELP from the main menu. -------------------------------------------------- REQUIREMENT FOR WIN32S LIBRARY The 32-bit libraries (Win32s) are necessary to run this program using Windows 3.1 or 3.11. The program will not start without the Win32s library. Windows 95 and Windows NT are 32-bit, so this discussion does not apply to users with either Windows 95 or NT. Some Windows 3.1 users will have the Win32s libraries already installed, and the files will be present in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\WIN32S. If there is no C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\WIN32S subdirectory, then the required files are not present. Note that older versions of the Win32s library may not have some of the required files. If an error like "Can't find OLE32.DLL" occurs, you should install the Win32s version supplied with this program. If the disks were obtained through the postal mail, the Win32s files are provided on two floppy disks labeled "Win32s Library". If the files were downloaded from the Internet, the files are called WIN32_1.EXE and WIN32_2.EXE. The files are compressed and must be uncompressed before use. The following discussion assumes that the hard disk is drive "C" and the floppy disk is drive "A". To install the library on a machine running Windows 3.1 or 3.11: 1. If in Windows, exit to the DOS "C:>" prompt. 2. Create a temporary subdirectory using the DOS "MD" command. For example, MD C:\TEMP 3. Change the current directory to the new temporary subdirectory using the DOS "CD" command. For example, CD C:\TEMP 4. Insert the Win32s floppy disk 1 into drive A. 5. Copy the file WIN32_1.EXE to the temporary subdirectory using the DOS "COPY" command. For example, COPY A:\ WIN32_1.EXE 6. Copy the second file, WIN32_2.EXE, in the same manner. 7. Uncompress the first disk by typing WIN32_1. Many file will emerge. Uncompress the second disk by typing WIN32_2. 8. Start Windows. 9. Execute the SETUP.EXE program in the temporary subdirectory by double clicking on the filename in the program manager. 10. After installation of the Win32s system, accept the option to install FreeCell. This is a game that will only run if the Win32s system is functioning properly. 11. After successful installation, the files in the temporary subdirectory can be deleted. The version of the Win32s system provided here was downloaded from Microsoft on 29 July 1996. The version provided is 1.30c and the file downloaded is named PW1118.EXE. If the Win32s subsystem is already installed on your computer but the LacI program does not function properly, it is advisable to upgrade to the latest Win32s version. The Win32s files are available free from Microsoft via the Internet at: http://www.microsoft.com/kb/softlib Choose "Windows 3.x and Windows for Workgroups" from the menu and search "Win32s". Then download the appropriate files and install the Win32s library. The Win32s files are also available free via a modem from the Microsoft download service at 206 936-6735. Search for the file PW1118.EXE. Please note that the filename may change if there is a new release of the Win32s subsystem; the filename is correct as of July 29, 1996. ------------------------------------------------ Virtually, Neal Cariello cariello@sunsite.unc.edu
