================= NATURAL HISTORY BOOK DEALERS 3.0 ============== International sources for books on "natural history" sciences, especially taxonomic monographs and the out-of-print. ================================================================= Issued June 1994, 638 lines, 28Kb. Replaces March 1994 edition. This list, now at edition 3.0, is archived on gopher at sunsite.unc.edu and at rjohara.uncg.edu, the Darwin-L gopher. A world-wide selection of natural history book dealers who deal by mail, send catalogues, and are likely to have taxonomic works. Most are antiquarian dealers but in-print, reprint, microform, CD-ROM, and on-line sources are included. Send updates, corrections, and especially your recommendations for additions to Geoff Read at . This list may be of help to those in search of early literature as well as new books in the fields of zoology, botany, ecology, palaeontology, etc. Information is provided in good faith without guarantee of accuracy. Most addresses/phones have been checked against a print source or by direct contact (non-nationals should omit leading zeroes in phone area codes.). Some dealers, marked with [NOREP], for unknown reasons did not respond to my mail. The date of the most recent information is indicated in brackets if known. Comments on catalogues and coverage have been updated where necessary. ADDITIONS (search for ||): Beth L. Bibby-Books (antiquarian botany, etc) Brooks Books (antiquarian botany) Don Conner Fine Books (antiquarian) DA Information services (new books) ETI (Expert center for Taxonomic identification) (CD-ROMs) Donald Hahn (antiquarian zoology, etc) Jonathan A. Hill (antiquarian science)_ Intercept Ltd (new books) Keneth M. Lewis (mycology) Lubrecht and Cramer (new mycology) M & S Rare Books (antiquarian) Jeff Weber Rare Books (antiquarian science) PRINT INFORMATION SOURCES: Many more prospects than can be included here are to be found in the "Sheppard's" series of printed directories of _antiquarian_ book dealers now published by Richard Joseph: "Sheppard's European book dealers" [7th ed 1989] "Sheppard's book dealers in the British Isles" [17th ed 1992]; "... in North America"; "... in India & the Orient"; "... in Australia and New Zealand" [1991]. Several other guides for geographic regions exist, including "Directory of specialised American book dealers" [Moretus Press, 1984(&?), and The ABAA Membership Directory, 1992-93. (available from Antiquarian Booksellers' Association of America, Incorporated, 50 Rockefeller Plaza, New York, NY 10020, USA. fax: +1-212- 459-0307. Send a SAE). Dealers also advertise in the several scholarly journals devoted to antiquarian books ("Antiquarian book monthly review" runs lists of recent catalogues) and in trade serials such as the American "AB Bookman's yearbook" ("the specialist book world annual"), and "AB Bookman's weekly." BOOK SUBSTITUTES: What about (non-photocopy) substitutes for a complete original work? MICROFICHE AND MICROFILM suppliers covering our subject matter include Chadwyck-Healey, Dieter Schierenberg, and IDC. See also others in "1992- 93 MMP microform marketplace: an international directory of micropublishing", published by K. G. Saur, Munich, who also publish "Guide to microforms in print" (arranged by author/title -- plenty of Linnaeus and Darwin for example -- but lacks a subject index). North American University theses are usually available by microfiche and can be located online via DIALOG or Compuserve in Dissertation Abstracts (also in print & CD-ROM) and ordered from UMI. Books on microform are convenient to store & transport but less so to read or to copy to paper. FACSIMILE REPRINTS can be another (sometimes still expensive) means to an end. Reprints of specific titles may be sought through normal books-in- print databases. In addition there is "Guide to reprints. An international bibliography of scholarly reprints", a 1993 publication by "Guide to reprints Inc" of Connecticut (by author/title, again Linnaeus and Darwin are represented, and much, much else). Contacts listed herein are Vedam Books (an access point to reprint publishers in India), Entomological Reprint Specialists in Los Angeles, and Editions Culture et Civilisation in Belgium. CD-ROM is probably now the easiest way to publish a facsimile. [Information required on specialist natural-history publishers please.] There are directories, for example Meckler Publishing's "CD-ROMS in print" in book and on CD-ROM. A CD-ROM of Darwin's major books is available (e-mail enquiries to . CD-ROM is also a new technology for identification guides (e.g., as produced by ETI (q.v.)). E-MAIL DISCUSSION ON RARE BOOKS: "EXLIBRIS" covers curation and scholarly analysis of rare books, and events in the rare-book world. To subscribe to "Exlibris" send the one line message, subject line blank, "sub exlibris your-name" to listserv@rutvm1.rutgers.edu. Follow up with the message "set exlibris mail digest" to receive just a combined message once per day. "BIBLIO", for book _collectors_, includes news of antiquarian book fairs, dealer catalogues, and wanted-to-sell/buy interactions. To subscribe to "Biblio", a non-standard listserver, send a blank message with the word "subscribe" in the *Subject:* field to biblio-request@iris.claremont.edu (or to biblio-d-request@... for the digest version). -*-AUSTRALIA-*- *01* Messrs Berkelouw Antiquarian Bookdealers [1993] 'Bendooley' Hume Highway Berrima NSW 2577 Tel +61-48-77-1370 Fax +61-48-77-1102 Occasional catalogues on botany & gardening, science.
