This is the README file of COMAP V1.0 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- COMAP is a public domain program for helping with the construction of restriction maps of small DNA fragment from digestion data. The program works under a graphical user interface, similar to the one used with the protein analysis program PROFILEGRAPH. COMAP does actually not calculate a map out of the digestion data but serves merely as a tool to help the user doing the work. for this purpose, the screen is divided into a display for the map under construction and a display for the 'gel' with the observed band pattern and, for comparison, the bands that would result from the current map. The user can insert, delete or move cuts in the map and simultaneously watch the resulting changes in the gel display. in its current version (V1.0), COMAP offers the following features: - up to 30 lanes (digestions) per project, single and multiple digestions allowed - works completely in graphics mode (herc/EGA/VGA/8514/SVGA) full mouse support, even in SVGA (!) - graphics output as hardcopy, POSTSCRIPT or TPGL file - basic map manipulation facilities - includes automated map-optimizition using the OPTIMAP multivariate optimization routine. - rather intuitive user interface (hopefully :-) - documentation in ASCII/POSTSCRIPT/WinWord format, printed booklet on request - source code in TURBO PASCAL supplied, fully public domain. Any parts can be included in the user's own programs. - Lots of bugs (who knows?) Availability ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- If everything works ok, COMAP will be available from the major FTP sites for molecular biology programs and from the EMBL fileserver.
