There are four tasks that comprise the error logging system. 1 ERL - Each time ERL is initialized (usually at system startup), it creates a file called ERR.TMP. ERL writes system configuration information and information it obtains from the executive error message queue to ERR.TMP. 2 PSE - (pre-formatter task) PSE requests the file ERROR.TMP from ERL, does some formatting of the raw error data, creates a file ERROR.SYS and then deletes ERROR.TMP. If one of more ERROR.SYS files exist, PSE appends the newly preformatted data to the highest version of the file. The data in ERROR.SYS is in a format that SYE can use to generate its reports. Type HELP PSE. 3 SYE - Report generator. Type HELP SYE or refer to the RSX-11M/M-PLUS Error Logging Manual for details. 4 ERF - Task to terminate ERL for system shutdown. For a summary of running Error Logging type HELP ERRLOG SUMMARY 2 SUMMARY RUNNING ERRLOG ERRLOG is the only task that needs to be installed permanently for error logging to function. To install ERRLOG, Type the following at a privileged terminal: >INS $ERL To activate error logging, initiate ERRLOG from a privileged terminal by typing: >RUN ERRLOG RUNNING PSE (PRE-FORMATTER) PSE must be run from a privileged terminal. To install and run PSE, type: >INS $PSE >PSE outdev:[ufd]file.typ=indev: The defaults for omitted fields are: SY0:[1,6]ERROR.SYS=SY0: When PSE prompts again, type CTRL/Z to return to MCR. For information on how to run SYE (the report generator) type: MCR>HELP SYE RUNNING ERF (THE SHUTDOWN TASK) To terminate error logging, run the task ERF by typing the following pair of commands from a privileged terminal: >INS $ERF >ERF For further information, refer to the RSX-11M/M-PLUS Error Logging Manual or type HELP PSE or HELP SYE.
