.C;^&FUTURE RUNOFF PLANS\& .S2 .AP The current version of RNO is currently lacking a number of features which are in DSR or which the user community would dearly like to have. Here is a partial list which may be added in the future, or which have been contemplated and are rejected for the immediate future. .s .list .le TABLE of CONTENTS - This is a fairly big ticket item, but is can be readily added. It will make RNO grow some, but not necessarily too much. .le RIGHT JUSTIFIED TABS - This is very useful for tables and requires minimal code, but it must be inserted carefully. .le FIGURE DEFERRED - This is useful, but the user can generally adjust the text to simulate this feature. This requires a bit of thought and possibly another stack. .le ESCAPE SEQUENCES with PRINTABLE characters - This does not entail a lot of overhead and is planned for the future. .LE PROPORTIONAL SPACING - This is a really big ticket item and while I have considered it, the problems are large. If supported it might not be possible to do it for any arbitrary printer. It is definitely not planned as an enhancement in the forseeable future. .LE The remaining missing DSR commands are either conveniences or unnecessary bells and whistles. Some or all could be added with little overhead, but since they can generally be done without they just might be. They include: .list 0 .display elements ll,')' .le AUTOJUSTIFY .le AUTOSUBTITLE .le AUTOTABLE .le CONTROL CHARACTERS (can not be done at all) .le DATE .le autoindexing via index flag .le SPACE/NO SPACE .le KEEP/NO KEEP .le SET LEVEL .le XLOWER/XUPPER .ELS .LE IF,THEN,ELSE,VARIABLE - Are certainly nice, but they put even more strain on dynamic memory and add quite a bit more code. They are not comtemplated. .tp 5 .le REFERENCES - The really nicest feature would be references to labels in other parts of the text so the user can specify the section or page for a piece of text. This would be extemely useful. It could be done in the foreward direction by defining labels before references only. For references to labels in later sections of text RNO would have to be a 2 or 3 pass program. This is for those who really think big!! It is not currently planned even though it is alluring. RNO is currently split into 2 parts input/output so at least half of the word for a 2 pass program has been done. .s .r;John Clement .r;Bonner Lab .r;Rice University .r;Houston, Tx.
