We get lots of lightening here, and have not fried a charger in the three years since I put a coil of insulated wire in. We lost three boards/chargers in the 18 months before that. Ours is 2' diameter and about 10 turns of #8 wire. Hope this helps.......Robert --- GEcho 1.00/beta * Origin: Telen-Quest, Simply D'Best! % 1.2Gig Multiline Strong (1:284/4) @PATH: 284/4 1 283/657 13/13 151/1003 3641/1 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- (2017) Wed 3 Jun 92 20:07 By: Daniel Klos To: Robert Marsh Re: Re: electric fencer ---------------------------------------------------------------------- @EID:108b 21c41879 @MSGID: 1:139/540 2a2d817c @PID: TeleMail 1.50 -=> Quoting Robert Marsh to Daniel Klos <=- RM> Hi Dan, I used to have problems with fried circut boards in my fence RM> chargers too, but a spark gap lightening arrestor on each fence line RM> going out from the charger helped, But the placement of a coil (choke) RM> in the hot wire just outside the charger worked wonders. Hope this helps.......Robert -!- GEcho 1.00/beta I know something about coils in low voltage applications, but I'm confused on how a coil would stop a high voltage surge. After all, wouldn't it stop the high voltage pulse from the fencer too? Where would the 'energy' be dissappated to? If a high magnetic flux was created, wouldn't it just dump itself back thru the wire after the hit was over? Your solution would probably work, it's just I'm confused about the mechanics.
