The more things change, the more they stay the same. Back in the
late 60s my father (CPA) had a client who owned one of the larger
high end antique stores in Chattanooga, TN. The store was air conditioned
by three large NG powered air conditioners. I don't remember the brand
but they were definitely off-the-shelf. Fascinating to hear an engine
crank seemingly at random.

I've been looking at the economics here and with Georgia Power's rates
--MORE--(55%)

now being among the highest in the nation in the summer (~11cents/kwh),
and with a 6 kw NG powered generator being available from Norther Hydraulics
for only about $2k, it looks like I could save money by generating my own.
Even if I only run my air conditioners on it, I would save lots of
bux. I believe that with the super-high efficient scroll-type compressors
in modern high SEER ACs, generating electricity to run the AC is the
least cost route.
