In fact in the Northwest most of the raw material for paper is mill
residuals - ie. the "waste" from sawmills and plywood plants.

I am doing research on early home garages and carriage houses converted to
garages. I am most interested in the period 1895 to 1925. I would
appreciate any leads you might have on articles or references to early
home garages. If you know architects, builders, historians who have
similar interests, I would greatly appreciate your assistance in helping
me make contact. Thank you, Alex Joyce. E-mail "AJSNOBRD.aol.com" or FAX

I am planning to change the look of my home in Raleigh, NC and have been
considering the EIFS stucco system. In the process of talking with some
people, I have been warned that there may be a problem with moisture being
trapped between the system and walls leading to damage.

Has anyone out there had experience with such a system? What kind of cost
did you have.

We are going over T-111 siding (which is ugly) and like the clean flat
look of the EIFS product. Other ideas greatly welcomed.

Thanks,

Todd

The primary source for paper fibre in North America before the 20 th century was hemp!? Please state your source for this suppose fa=
ct.

What where all of those Quebec, Ontario, Maritime, Great Lakes and New England Paper mills doing for fibre (they existed before 1900=
)? I suspect they where using the extensive stands of trees (that they still use) that grow locally rather than cutting them down to=
 grow hemp.

help and would like your recommendations of your three worst
hoofers. Plase include any details like construction date, architect
etc, and we will include the buildings on the hot list.
Please e-mail us at 100306.3431@compuserve.com.

That may be true in the U.S., but here in Canada the Clayoquote Sound old
growth pacific rainforest is being turn into paper for phone books in
U.S.. In Alberta, most of our northern boreal forest is also being
converted into pulp.

Hi,
I'm building an adobe house in a hot climate (Western Australia).
I've been unable to secure a design for a flat roof which has good
thermal properties (doesn't bake inhabitants), good fiscal properties,
and satisfies local building inspectors. The alternative I've got at
hand is an R2.5 insulated, white epoxy coated, steel roof. It isn't
even supported by my vigas! Can I do better? Any hints or tips
appreciated -

I would like to know if anyone has ever built or considered building a
horse Riding Arena by building it four feet into the ground to take
advantage of the heat from the earth to make the arena kind of warm
during the winter monthes. This Arena will be approximately 100 x 200
feet, built north of Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
Any suggestions on how a Riding Arena could be "heated" economically
would be appreciated..........................Normand

is there any easy way to take up indoor\outdoor carpet, glued to cement? I
am going to install ceramic tile on this floor, but this rug is the
largest problem. The paste appears to be lino paste, brown in color.

What? Ever built a sandcastle? How about a clay pot? You add water to
the particles, and you have all the shoring you need to make almost any
shape. It's not a pile of dry granules, or a wet slumpy mixture. As with
any material, you mustn't over-extend it, but then it only has to hold until
the concrete firms up. You're shooting the concrete from the base-up,
presumably, so it'll naturally take most of its own loads if you allow it
to cure some before moving up. Like building an igloo or stone dome, you
don't start at the top - you gradually encircle it upward.

This is ancient technology for buildings. Positive forms are easy to make.
If you don't want to move as much earth around (it's your berm material too),
use filler. Put old barrels, or vans, or a bus, or a railroad car under
the dirt, and roll it out after you dig it free. Or you can do a
subsurface structure by -leaving- a positive shape as you dig around it
>from above. Make sure you leave access for digging out the middle.

Air bags are fine, but they are more limited in what they can do easily.
And you generally end up with the insulation -inside- rather than outside
where it is most effective and desirable. With concrete inside, you have
a safer structure from a fire standpoint too.

Some very valid points have been made in this thread. One that was missed,
however, is that hemp fiber does not contain silica. The silica content of
other "alternative" fibers ruins the machines that process the fibers.

I got this information from C&S Redwood Lumber in Eugene, Oregon. They
were importing bales of hemp fiber from China in cooperation with the
University of Washington. At the UofW, a press was set up that made the
hemp fiber into pressboard of different strengths. It looked very much
like chipboard, but with longer fibers. I have in my possesion a videotape
that features Mr. Conde speaking about the project. The video is called
"Common Sense- Episode #1."

Hello,

I'm trying to find the address, fax number, telephone number and maybe
the email address of Unistudio associati. I think they are a printing
or graphic design firm, possibly in the Milan area. The word
Impaginazione might offer a clue to the nature of their business, as I
saw the word with their name in a book.

Please email me if you can help. Thamks. graham@mancha.demon.co.uk
