Real Goods sells alternative living products mainly by mail order, but also have three retail stores. They put out a yuppie catalog, an small energy products catalog. Both of these catalogs are free by calling 1-800-762-7325. They also have two large catalogs for lighting and Solar living. The "Solar living source book" costs around $23 and has about 650 pages. It is the only catalog I find useful. Real Goods prices are a little higher than other suppliers, and you might want to contact some of the others. You asked about composting toilets and I have been asking questions and researching for years, but do not have any hands on experience. My conclusion is that the cheapest way to go is to build your own. It sounds like most designs which have a top vent and fan work. If the inside is sloped down to an outside clean out and you add peat moss every so often they work even better. The claim by some manufactures that the fan is not needed seems to be only partially true. Most installations end up having the fan. Some designs have an internal heater, but this is not needed if the unit is somewhat insulated from the cold. The best design is one that can be easily cleaned and the fan replaced without a lot of work.
