The South African Air Force had two squadrons which operated the
Liberator during World War II. These were No.31 and No.34 Squadrons.
Most of the Liberators turned over to the South African Air Force were
Mk VIs and Mk VIIIs drawn from Royal Air Force stocks.

South African Liberators generally operated out of bases in Italy and
the Middle East, flying bombing missions over Austria, northern Italy,
Rumania, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, and Yugoslavia. After the war in
Europe ended, SAAF Liberators were used for repatriation of released
prisoners of war and for ferrying of troops back to Britain and South
Africa. The SAAF Liberator squadrons were disbanded at the end of
1945.
