P38-01.JPG Instrument panel. Panel itself will be re-used, with new instruments. P38-02.JPG Cannon & machine guns -- not restored -- These are as recovered, and were test-fired shortly after recovery. Cylinder at rear top of cannon is drum for ammunition. Large silver objects are newly fabricated ammunition bins for the machine guns. The four half- rounded dark objects in back are the newly fabricated radiators for the engines. P38-03.JPG Portion of left boom, with original isignia on panel. P38-04.JPG Low view from left front. Note that engine on display, while it is an Allison V-1710, is not an original engine recovered with this aircraft. The two original engines have been sent away for rebuilding. (The manufacturer's plate on the engine indicates that it was overhauled in 1944, a neat trick if it had been on this aircraft.) P38-05.JPG Overhead view from right. Photo taken from purpose-built viewing stand. P38-06.JPG Original grafitti discoverd under right inside radiator. Restoration team has masked off the area when repainting to preserve it. The vertical row of pins at left on the photo are clekoloks, a temporary fastener that substitues for a rivet, allowing construction to proceed, and allowing for re-alignment as needed. They will be replaced one at a time by rivets. [Note. The grafitti have lost some readibility in scanning. The upper one is a caricature of a Japanese with VERY large ears; for clarity 'JAP' is written on his forehead. The lower grafitti reads: "Aft Boom installed By Rogers (10-3154) and Kirkpatrick (10-5109). Swing."]
