But first.... > > ) Also, how do you translate the `-shire' at the end of county-names, eg. > ( Lancashire, Herefordshire, Leicestershire? So Swydd Gaerhirfryn, Swydd > Henffordd and Swydd Gaerly+r for yours. Yes, those usually are rendered > in Welsh these days. Of course you don't /need/ the Sir or Swydd if there > i sn't any chance of confusion with the town -- the name of the cricket > tea m would not need it, for example. I have had several totally conflicting answers to this, and I'm getting even more confused. Plus, what of the counties not in -shire format? Those I will list after the list of towns. I have restricted this list to English towns, as I can get hold of Welsh names for Welsh places. Some of these I think I know already, but I included them to make the list...well, complete, shall we say? There are 81 towns here, mostly England's main towns, with some of personal interest. (So if you don't like long lists, switch off now! :-}) Chances are, most of them don't actually have Welsh names, but it's worth trying nevertheless.... Aylesbury Bath Bedford Birkenhead Birmingham Blackburn Blackpool Bolton Bournemouth Bradford . Brighton Bristol Buckingham Cambridge Carlisle Cheltenham Chester Chesterfield Chichester Colchester . Coventry Crewe Derby Doncaster Dorchester Dover Durham Ely Exeter Gloucester . Harrogate Hereford Hertford Hull Huntingdon Ipswich Lancaster Leeds Leicester Leominster . Lewes Lincoln Liverpool London Ludlow Maidenhead Maidstone Manchester Monmouth Newcastle . Northampton Norwich Nottingham Oxford Penrith Penzance Peterborough Plymouth Portsmouth Preston . Reading Rotherham Rugby Runcorn St. Albans St. Helens Salford Salisbury Sheffield Southampton . Stafford Stockport Stoke Swindon Taunton Wakefield Warwick Wigan (absolutely no chance, but I couldn't resist it!) Wolverhampton Worcester York And what about: Avon Berkshire Cleveland Cornwall Cumbria Devon Dorset Essex Greater London Greater Manchester . Hampshire Humberside Kent Merseyside Norfolk Northumberland / Northumbria (Which is it now?) Shropshire Somerset Suffolk Surrey . Sussex Tyne & Wear West Midlands Wiltshire And if I have omitted any English places which do have Welsh names, please let me know. It would probably be better for you to E-mail me personally, so as not to waste everyone else's time. I will draw up the list of Welsh names (if any) for these places when I have found out all I can.
