To: SunSITE Archive As I got no response to my first round of reduplicated questions, let me try again. Does anyone know how the dyn hysbys or magic man was regarded in the Middle Ages, whether he was sanctioned by the law or not, what attitudes were taken towards the practice of witchcraft by both men and women and whether gender distinctions were made between them. _Hud_ is related through CC *soito with Norse _seith_ which, for the Scandinavian, was feminine magic, practiced by women, mostly, and scandalous if practiced by men. I'm after some sense of Welsh attitudes towards male and female magic in the fourteenth, fifteenth century or so. Surely some historians have given some thought to this. Sincerely, Sarah Higley
