To: Multiple recipients of list WELSH-L David - thanks for writing with more details - it's very interesting to hear what sort of things are being done in Welsh studies around the World, and also what kind of courses are offered at a University level. Here in Oslo I have been teaching modern Welsh grammar on and off - we have a local Welshman (active in the Cymdeithas Cymraeg Oslo), Iori Roberts, to come in and give conversation practice. My colleague, Jan Erik Rekdal, teaches some literature, and in theory Prof. Lindemann (one of the last great philologists) can give courses in Middle Welsh. This Autumn we had Ian Hughes from Aberystwyth teaching here for a few months (both Welsh and Irish), and last Spring Ailbhe O'Corrain flew in from Uppsala, Sweden, 3 or 4 times to give lectures. He has some 40-50 students in Celtic languages over there, whereas here in Oslo we have been teaching 2-3 students (e.g. Knut Mork, who has been on this list). I am affiliated to the dept. of comparative literature (basically a department for the study of the major European literatures and lots and lots of theory). Jan Erik is in Celtic Studies, but Celtic Studies here in Oslo has been subsumed under the Department for Linguistics. The reason I asked about Kathryn Klar (your references seem to ring a bell somewhere - but I don't keep up with the older material) was that I am interested in getting into contact with other people who are not Welsh but who are working on modern Welsh literature (your answer tells me that she isn't). Most people in this field are Welsh and work in Wales. My sort of position has all sorts of ethical and political ramifications which I have to be aware of, and I wouldn't mind talking to somebody else about it once in a while. I wouldn't advise anybody to come and study Welsh in Oslo during the next couple of years, however. Both I and Jan Erik are too occupied with our research projects to be able to give any teaching or organise alternatives. This is a pity - hopefully we will be able to set things right at another point of time. Wel, digon o Saesneg - a rhaid i mi fynd yn ol i waith. Hwyl fawr - Johan S.
