Hello. I have found a fascinating description of Cornish Grammar in _The Ancient Cornish Drama_ by Edwin Norris. It was first published in 1859 and was reissued in 1968 by Benjamin Blom, Inc. Bronx, New York 10452. It is in two volumes and records a 'miracle' play in Cornish called the Ordinalia and is a set of three plays recording biblical themes such as the creation of the world and the life of Jesus. In the second volume is a long "Ancient Cornish Vocabulary" which includes all the words from the work and a long section titled "Sketch of Cornish Grammar" based on Norris' observations translating the work. I hope to post the vocabulary one of these days, but for right now I'd like to share some notes on readings from the "Sketch of Cornish Grammar" with you. The material for these notes occurs on p.228 volume 2 of the work: ================================================================================ ARTICLES The definite article is _an_ (en) for all numbers and genders: an myghtern the king an venen the woman an porthow the gates When the definite article is in connection with a preceding word ending in a vowel, the article usually looses its own vowel, and the 'n' is added to the preceeding word. The 'n' is often seperated from that word by an apostrophe. The article isn't inflected and cases are made by prepositions (except the genitive but more on that later): en tas ha'n map ha'n spyrys the Father and the Son and the Spirit an mor ha'n tyryow the sea and the lands the'n tas to the father a'n nef from the heaven war an kunys upon the wood the'n dor to the ground The indefinite article is _un_ and is invariable also. It is also quite rare according to Norris: un map a son worth un venen to a woman ================================================================================ I will continue to periodically post notes from Norris' work unless something else comes up. I hope you find my humble notes helpful and please feel free to e-mail comments, questions, or suggestions to me!
