Spuzhet: The word isn't "spuzhet" but "tsespuzhet", which was written as two words. Weinreich's dictionary gives "tsespuzhen" as "frighten (horse); make wild with fright". Karahulke: My Russian-English dictionary (Smirnitsky) gives "karaulka" as "guard-room, guard-house". It is tagged as a colloquialism. Arnie Kuzmack 2)---------------------------------------------------- Date: Sun Jun 12 19:47:33 1994 From: hn6@columbia.edu Subject: "Spuzhet" and "karahulke" There is Ukrainian: spudzhuvatysja `to be frightened, scared' (cf. Russian: ispugat'sja and spugivat'). The form you list apparently has the prefix tse- and the reflexive _zikh_ which are frequently used in Yiddish to express the sudden beginning of a process (ingressive Aktionsart): (e.g., tseveynen zikh: `to burst into tears'. karahulke: There is Russian : karaulka meaning `guard-room, guard-house' Holger Nath 3)---------------------------------------------------- Date: Mon Jun 13 10:36:48 1994 From: Taube@HUM.HUJI.AC.IL Subject: J.B. Singer [cf. vol4.018, vol4.019, vol4.022] Note that in Ewa Geller's book itself, unlike in the leaflet, the name is spelled (p.123) I.B. Singer, and in full (ibid.) Izaak Bashevis Singer. Moyshe Taube 4)---------------------------------------------------- Date: Mon Jun 13 12:58:26 1994 From: astroj@astro.washington.edu Subject: I.J. Singer The book by IJ Singer to which chaver Leeson refers is "Yoshe Kalb." It's a terrific novel and is (or was) also available in English. Chaim Rosemarin 5)---------------------------------------------------- Date: Mon Jun 13 11:18:36 1994 From: pviswana@andromeda.rutgers.edu Subject:Re: yivo It was suggested earlier on mendele that yivo with the komets alef at the end was built on the model of remo, r. moshe isserles. I have two comments on that. First of all, may the komets alef in the remo not be from the mo of moshe? Second, I asked my rabbi. He thinks that r. moshe isserles name was written remo and not rema to distinguigh r. moshe isserles from another rabbi, whose acronym is ramah (I didn't ask him for the full name of this rabbi, but I got the impression that he is well known).
