THE ELECTRONIC ZOO - What is it? A List of Animal-Related Computer Resources (Electronic Mailing Lists, Bulletin Board Systems, Gophers, Mail Servers, Usenet Newsgroups, & FTP Sites) Version 2.0 (last revised: November 25, 1993) Compiled by: Ken Boschert, DVM Associate Director Washington University Division of Comparative Medicine Box 8061, 660 South Euclid Ave. St. Louis, MO 63110 Phone: 314-362-3700 Fax: 314-362-6480 E-mail: ken@wudcm.wustl.edu * This document is being cross-posted to several lists. The entire text is over 200K and I have split it into 5 parts, since many mail systems will not accept messages larger than 50K. Apologies to those who find it in their mailbox more than once. Being a veterinarian and a computer nut, I had been net-surfing and cataloging these systems for years for my own use. Noting the spirit of sharing evident all throughout the Internet, I hope this contribution will be helpful to those with similar interests. As this list will bear witness, animals of all sorts are popular topics of discussion and a number of sites have useful files for downloading. Listservers, Telnet & FTP sites, gophers, dial-up bulletin boards (BBS's) - they're all cataloged here and have a common thread of being related to animals in some form or fashion. There are other lists around the net with similar, yet different focuses: Wilfred Drewe's NOT JUST COWS focuses on agricultural computer themes, including animals and crops; Lee Hancock's INTERNET/BITNET HEALTH SCIENCES RESOURCES covers the medical computer field thoroughly; and Una Smith's A BIOLOGIST'S GUIDE TO INTERNET RESOURCES is a great resource describing flora and fauna computer systems around the world. The ELECTRONIC ZOO list has been cross-checked with these documents and extracts the animal-related computer resources from all three, then combines them with additional resources I have uncovered. I do not personally subscribe to all of the systems listed below, but have endeavored to insure that they do exist. This edition of THE ELECTRONIC ZOO is an extensive rewrite of version 1.4 and is as accurate as I can determine. However, if you note errors or omissions, please send corrections or additions to me at: I would especially appreciate additional sources on network sites containing animal-related materials. Many of the descriptions below are contributed directly from the list owners, moderators, and sysops around the world who spend their own time maintaining their respective systems. Collectively, I acknowledge their tremendous efforts and encourage each of you to take the time to pass along a note of thanks when you get a chance. Thanks and enjoy!
