Heen-list is a forum for professional anthropologists, primatologists, biologists, and others to share information on how they, as professionals, can use their experience and education as a resource for educators and young students in their areas. The list can particularly benefit from having members of different experience levels; some HEEN members have worked extensively in the schools, and others are curious about how they could become involved. Like the HEEN Newsletter _Missing Link_, heen-list is for you to share your ideas, successes, and frustrations. Not only can you be a resource for schools, you can be a resource for your colleagues as well. Heen-list is non-automated; you will not receive immediate confirmation of you subscription, but your name and address will be added to heen-list within a few days of your subscription message. Let us know your name and e-mail address. Since it is non-automated, the format doesn't matter much. This includes an on-line global telecommunications network; (2) Create a scientific ice station, frozen into the Arctic Ocean, for use by an international consortium of scientists, educators and university students to collect data and conduct environmental research on the region. It will also serve as a resource for the education program. Special emphasis will be given to developing components of experiments that can be effectively used in the classroom and to surveying existing Arctic science research programs for input in the dynamic educational model; (3) A four-person multinational expedition will embark on a 2,500 mile traverse of the Arctic Ocean to supplement the education programs, underline the message of international cooperation, and generate media and public attention to all scientific work being done in the arctic. The IAP will bring knowledge of the Arctic Circumpolar Region and its environmental fragility, indigenous cultures, natural resources, scientific importance, and relationship to the planet to schools and to the general, international public. During the Steger expedition, which will take place from March through July 1995, members hope to use this telecommunications network to conduct live, two-way communications via satellite. It is planned that the study will be a model for a permanent structure. The IAP in years to come will organize similar projects that study other regional ecosystems with the same combination of education, science and adventure. During the Arctic Telecomputing Pilot, students and teachers in grades 4-9 will take part in a 18-month, on-line computer project to develop, expand and refine an international interactive telecomputing network. The pilot will run from March 1992 through June 1993. The network will ultimately serve as a direct link between scientists in the Arctic Ocean, circumpolar communities, and students participating over long-distances in real-time research and related classroom activities. Through the pilot, classroom teachers will design and test specific classroom activities that apply to interdisciplinary studies focused on the polar region. These activities will emphasize communications between field scientists, educators and students and promote communication and resource-sharing among schools. It will also aim to coordinate information-sharing among currently disparate telecommunications systems, refining a network for collaborative projects that focus on global environmental issues.
