Most of the research opportunity information available on this bulletin board is derived from the weekly publication, "NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts", consisting of Notices, RFAs, RFPs (announcements of availability), Numbered Program Announcements, and statements of PHS policy. The electronic version known as E-Guide is available for electronic transmission each week, sometimes a day or two in advance of the nominal Friday publication dates. The material consists predominantly of statements about the research interests of the PHS Agencies, Institutes, and National Centers that have funds to support research in the extramural community. The information found on the NIH Grant Line is grouped into three main sections: (1) short News Flashes that appear without any prompting shortly after you have logged on; (2) Bulletins that are for reading; and (3) Files that are intended mainly for downloading. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- OCEANIC INFORMATION CENTER Internet: telnet to deloch.udel.edu or 128.175.24.1 At the login prompt, enter: info ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- PENPAGES Agricultural Information Internet: telnet to psupen.psu.edu or 128.118.36.5 At the login prompt, enter: your two-letter state abbreviation Description: PENpages is a full-text information service containing thousands of research-based fact sheets, news articles, newsletters, and reports. USENET is not an organization and no one person or group is in charge of USENET as a whole. Many USENET sites are at universities, but a large number of sites are commercial organizations. USENET newsgroups can be read at thousands of sites around the world. If your site provides USENET access, then there are a large number of software packages available for reading news, allowing you to subscribe to newsgroups, follow threads of discussion, and allow posting of messages to the various newsgroups. Below are those USENET newsgroups which have some connection to animal topics. alt.agriculture Discussion on agriculture. alt.fishing Fishing as a hobby and sport. alt.pets.rabbits Discussions on pet rabbits. alt.sustainable.agriculture Sustainable agriculture. bionet.* All the BIOSCI groups (previously described) clari.news.interest.animals (Clarinet) Animals in the news. rec.aquaria Keeping fish and aquaria as a hobby. rec.birds Hobbyists interested in bird watching. rec.equestrian Discussion of things equestrian. rec.food.veg Vegetarians. rec.hunting Discussions about hunting. rec.outdoors.fishing All aspects of sport and commercial fishing. rec.pets Pets, pet care & household animals in general. rec.pets.birds The culture and care of indoor birds. rec.pets.cats Discussion about domestic cats. rec.pets.dogs Any and all subjects relating to dogs as pets. rec.pets.herp Reptile, amphibian, & exotic vivarium pets. rec.pets.rabbits Discussion about pet rabbits. sci.answers Frequently Asked Questions about SCI groups. sci.aquaria Only science-oriented posts about aquaria. sci.bio Biology and related sciences. sci.bio.ecology Ecological research (sponsored by ESA). sci.bio.technology Any topic relating to biotechnology. sci.environment Science and its relation to the environment. sci.med Medicine and its related products and regs. sci.med.aids AIDS: treatment, path./biol., HIV prevention. sci.research Research methods, funding, ethics, & misc. talk.environment Discussions about environmental issues. talk.politics.animals The use and/or abuse of animals. ============================================================================= ANONYMOUS FTP SITES ============================================================================= Archival FTP sites containing animal-related text files and software programs are not well documented on the Internet. Help in locating more sites is appreciated. The general procedure to login to these sites is to use the FTP facility on your computer to connect to the remote site, then at the username prompt, login as anonymous and enter your e-mail address as password. To identify files you wish to access, you can use the DIR command, which functions much like in MS-DOS. The CD command also works normally in most cases. To obtain a list of available subdirectories, Use the LS command. Once you locate the file you want, it may be transferred by typing GET (filename). When finished with your FTP session, issue the command QUIT to return to your computer. It is also possible to retrieve archived files via e-mail. BITFTP provides this mail interface to FTP commands and is provided on a Princeton University computer. To use BITFTP, send mail containing your ftp commands to BITFTP@PUCC (on Bitnet) or BITFTP@pucc.Princeton.edu (on Internet). Send the command HELP in the body of a mail message to obtain full instructions on this service. Europeans Bitnet/Internet users should use the BITFTP server in Germany: BITFTP@DEARN or bitftp@vm.gmd.de with the same instructions for obtaining help above. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ANIMAL RIGHTS FTP: think.com Directory: /animal-rights ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- AQUARIA FTP: camel.scubed.com or 192.31.63.74 Directory: /aquaria ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- AQUARIA FTP: jerico.usc.edu or 128.125.51.6 Directory: /pub/aquaria Description: The FAQ for sci.aquaria, rec.aquaria and alt.aquaria is posted monthly on the first on of the month. If you don't want all of them, include only the lines of the ones you want. You do have to repeat the path information for each file. Also, there are some breed specific faqs kept in the dogs-faq/breeds directory. Just as with the files above, you can ftp and look for them. The existing faqs are: bloodhounds (Bloodhounds), cavaliers (Cavalier King Charles Spaniels), chessies (Chesapeake Bay Retrievers), chows (the Chow Chow), collies (Rough and Smooth Collies), greyhounds (Greyhounds), havanese (Havanese), huskies (Siberian Huskies), labradors (Labrador Retrievers), malamutes (Alaskan Malamutes), ridgebacks (Rhodesian Ridgebacks), and tollers (Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers). These are all the breeds currently covered; new ones are added from time to time as readers contribute them. You can obtain any or all of them from the mail server (as above) with the following commands: send usenet/news.answers/dogs-faq/breeds/bloodhounds send usenet/news.answers/dogs-faq/breeds/cavaliers send usenet/news.answers/dogs-faq/breeds/chessies send usenet/news.answers/dogs-faq/breeds/chows send usenet/news.answers/dogs-faq/breeds/collies send usenet/news.answers/dogs-faq/breeds/greyhounds send usenet/news.answers/dogs-faq/breeds/havanese send usenet/news.answers/dogs-faq/breeds/huskies send usenet/news.answers/dogs-faq/breeds/labradors send usenet/news.answers/dogs-faq/breeds/malamutes send usenet/news.answers/dogs-faq/breeds/ridgebacks send usenet/news.answers/dogs-faq/breeds/tollers These faqs are written by different readers of rec.pets.dogs who have experience with the breed in question. You are encouraged to volunteer to write new breed faqs, please contact tittle@netcom.com for details. Finally, there is a FAQ on fleas and ticks. It is not included with the dog FAQs because it is generalized for dogs AND cats. However, it is archived in the same spot, under: /pub/usenet/news.answers/fleas-ticks for ftp, or "send usenet/news.answers/fleas-ticks" to the mail-server. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- DOLPHINS FTP: seq1.loc.gov or 140.147.3.12 Directory: /pub/Library.of.Congress/research.guides/science.tracer.bullets ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ECONET California FTP: igc.org ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ERIN Environmental Resources Information Network (ERIN) Newsletter (Australia) FTP: huh.harvard.edu ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ENTOMOLOGY Australia FTP: spider.ento.csiro.au ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ENVIROFTP The EnviroLink Network FTP: envirolink.hss.cmu.edu ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY LIBRARY FTP: epaibm.rtpnc.epa.gov or 134.67.180.1 Directory: /public ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES FTP: sunsite.unc.edu or 152.2.22.81 Directory: /pub/academic/agriculture/sustainable-agriculture/general ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- FLEAS & TICKS FTP: pit-manager.mit.edu or 18.172.1.27 Directory: /pub/usenet/news.answers/fleas-ticks ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- FLYBASE (Drosophila Melanogaster) FTP: ftp.bio.indiana.edu or 129.79.224.25 Directory: /flybase/greybook Contact: ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- GENOME CENTER GENETIC MAP OF THE MOUSE Massachusetts Institute of Technology FTP: genome.wi.mit.edu Directory: /distribution/mouse_sslp_release/oct93 Description: Release four of the Whitehead Institute/MIT Genome Center Genetic Map of the Mouse is now available.
