*********************************************************************** FINAL PROGRAMME *********************************************************************** ANZIIS-93 Inaugural Australian and New Zealand Conference on Intelligent Information Systems Perth, Western Australia Tutorials: 30 November 1993 Conference: 1-3 December 1993 ANZIIS-93 FINAL PROGRAMME ANZIIS-93 is the inaugural Australian and New-Zealand conference on Intelligent Information Systems to be held in Perth, Western Australia. Well over 200 papers have been submitted in the four targeted areas of Artificial Intelligence, Fuzzy Systems, Neural Networks and Virtual Reality. It is a multi-disciplinary meeting that will bring together engineers, computer scientists, mathema- ticians, physicists and psychologists. The main conference, 1-3 December 1993, includes three keynote addresses by distinguished visitors from the USA and UK. 72 pa- pers will be presented orally and 59 in poster format by Aus- tralian and New Zealand as well as overseas delegates. The pa- pers have been selected after review by at least two Australian and one overseas referees. The topics include fundamental research and applications in the areas of image processing, robotics, control, biomedicine, virtual reality, wavelet transforms, genetic algorithms, speech processing and hybrid sys- tems. Four pre-conference tutorials have been arranged for Tuesday 30 November 1993. He has served in a number of govern- ment technical advisory committees and has frequently acted as a consultant to industry. He was recently the General Chairman of the International Joint Conference on Neural Networks held in Portland, July 1993. His interest lies in developing methodology for assisting teams of people to carry out systems design en- gineering, analysis of social and human systems, models for com- plex systems, structure and modelling, artificial intelligence and neural networks with application to conceptual graph knowledge systems. Dr. John Wann is a Senior Lecturer in Perception & Movement Con- trol at the University of Queensland, he also holds a concurrent post at the Dept of Psychology, University of Edinburgh where he is co-director of the Virtual Environment Research Laboratory. This research facility is funded through grants from the UK Medi- cal Research and Science and Engineering Research Councils and is one of the few laboratories in the world that are exploring human perception and control using VR technology. Dr. Wann serves on a number of editorial and review boards and also publishes within the fields of visual perception and child development. Professor Jacek Zurada is the Director of the S. T. Fife VLSI Circuit Design Laboratory at the University of Louisville, Ken- tucky USA. His specialisation is microelectronic analog and di- gital circuits for signal processing and neural networks. He is the author of a successful ANN textbook: Introduction to Artifi- cial Neural Systems and co-author of Active RC Filters. Dr Zura- da served as Chairman of the CAS Neural Systems and Applications Committee and is now Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks and the Artificial Neural Networks Journal. He has received a number of awards and distinctions including IEEE Outstanding Electronic Engineer. Tutorial Sessions ================ Four different tutorials will be held on Tuesday 30 November as shown on the registration form. There is a limited number of tu- torial places so please book early. T-1 Virtual Reality - Austin Presented by: Dr. John Wann This tutorial will start by reviewing the history of VR and will concentrate on emergent VR hardware such as headsets, gloves, tactile feedback and the computational requirements of supporting such peripherals. The tutorial will the focus on the human side of the VR interface. What evidence is there that these modes of presentation can provide good information transmission? What are the problems with using some of these display mediums and what pitfalls should system designers be aware of when considering adapting VR technology for their applications? The selection of suitable metrics for measuring human performance in a VR setting will also be discussed. Finally the tutorial will focus on ex- panding VR research in Australia and potential strategies for at- tracting research support in what is still seen as a "specula- tive" field by funding bodies. T-2 Learning Algorithms - Fox Presented by: Professor Jacek Zurada Learning is a fundamental property of networks acquiring computa- tional intelligence. In ANN learning takes the form of approxi- mation of relationships from data or the form of encoding desired equilibria. This tutorial reviews the basic concepts of super- vised and unsupervised learning of most important ANN architec- tures. The tutorial stresses the visualization of learning in both pattern and weight space. It demonstrates links between various methods of network adaptation schemes. The material presented is addressed to persons interested in pursuing indepen- dent research/study/ANN modelling who are also seeking under- standing of concepts underlying computational properties of ANN. T-3 Neural Networks and Expert Systems - Austin Presented by: Professor George Lendaris After defining the fundamental ideas and terminologies used in ANN and symbolic AI with respect to expert systems, this tutorial will discuss the ease or difficulty of implementing the following properties in ANNs: reasoning by forward chaining and backward chaining, issues of declarative/procedural knowledge and distri- buted representation, ability to provide explanations, informa- tion acquisition for expert systems, extraction of rules, noise and probabilistic considerations. Examples include If-Then rules implemented via Fuzzy Logic and how ANNs can assist in gathering data to formulate and refine such fuzzy rules. T-4 Wavelet Transforms and Applications - Fox Presented by: Professor Thong Nguyen This tutorial will introduce and explain wavelet transform theory including short-term Fourier Transforms, definitions and charac- teristics of popular wavelets, frame of discrete wavelets, graph- ical derivation of wavelet analysis, multiresolution signal analysis using wavelet transforms, Mallat's recursive algorithm, bi-orthogonal wavelet bases, Daubechies' wavelet design procedure and applications in multiresolution video coding, fractal analysis and other signal processing. Training Guarantee Scheme This conference and its tutorials have been designed to meet the requirements for a structured training program. Where attendance is to develop, maintain or improve employment related skills, it qualifies as an eligible training program under the Australian Training Guarantee scheme. If required, supporting documentation is available to employers. There are several daily flights into Perth from all Australian capital cities. Delegates arriving from overseas can book their tickets direct to Perth as there are frequent flights from many countries. QANTAS Australian is offering special fares to delegates and a major prize (free travel within Australia on QAN- TAS Australian) to one lucky delegate. To be eligible, book your flight with QANTAS Australian (telephone 131212 in Aust.) and quote "ANZIIS-93". This will ensure you get the best fare. Keep your boarding pass and drop it into the box at the conference dinner to be eligible for the prize draw. Transport from Airport Perth Airport, located 15 km East of the city centre, has two separate terminal areas: the Domestic and the International. These are at opposite sides of the main runways and are treated as though they are different airports. There is an airport coach operated by Feature Tours (A$6 from domestic and $7 from interna- tional airport) which runs regularly from each terminal to all main city hotels and may run to the University Halls of Residence. There are Transperth bus services 201, 202, 208 and 209 which run from the Domestic Terminal to the University area for about $2. Taxis are available and will cost about $15. Visas All overseas visitors to Australia will require a passport and an entry visa, except for New Zealand and Papua New Guinea passport holders. Your travel agent will be able to assist you in this matter. Visas may be obtained from the nearest Australian High Commission, Embassy or Consulate. Insurance Delegates are advised to arrange health and travel insurance be- fore their travel, to cover against financial loss due to illness or other disruption of travel arrangements.
