Please find enclosed the programme for ECAL '93, as well as maps and instructions on how to get to the hotels and the conference site. You are all invited to an informal "Welcome to ECAL" drink/check-in session, at the Falstaff cafe, Sunday May 23rd, from 8-10 in the evening. The Falstaff is near La Bourse, at the centre of Bruxelles (see enclosed instructions). If all goes as planned, those of you who reserved their hotel room through us should find a copy of the informal proceedings either waiting for them in their rooms or at the reception desk. Those of you who have made separate arrangements will receive their proceedings either at the Falstaff or at the conference check-in on Monday morning. We hope all goes well with your travel arrangements, and look forward to seeing you at the Falstaff. Yours sincerely Simon Goss (for the organising committee) ________________________________________________________ Program ECAL MONDAY May 24th 09.00 - Inauguration 09.15 - F. Taxi: this is by far the simplest and quickest, but can cost 800-1200 BF ($25-$40). 2. Train link: there is a train station underneath the airport terminal (Zaventem) which takes you to Brussels 3 times per hour (xx.09, xx.24 and xx.46, trip takes 20 min), and costs 80BF ($2). There are 3 stations at Brussels, Nord, Central and Midi. Bruxelles Nord is nearest Hotels President WTC, Palace, and Vendome. Bruxelles Central is nearest Hotels Atlas, Arcade Ste. Catherine, Opera, Orion and Sabina. Bruxelles Midi is nearest Hotel de Paris. From the station, depending on how many suitcases you have, or on other factors, you might care to walk, take a taxi (count 200-300BF), or take the metro. At Bruxelles Nord you might be better advised to take a taxi to the hotel or a tram (platform in the station) to Place Rogier, rather than walk, as this is not the most attractive or safest part of Brussels. If you wish to take the metro (see comments on how to get from the hotel to the conference about buying metro tickets), then: For Hotel President WTC, the hotel is close to the Gare du Nord. On your map, where the street names are marked, it's just off square E1, to the North, on Boulevard Emile Jacqmain (no 180), marked in green and yellow. You can see the World Trade Centre marked in black on square E1. The hotel is not quite opposite, being a bit off the map to the North, further along the Boulevard E. Jacqmain. (To get to the centre, they organise a shuttle in the evenings. It's 15-20 minutes walk.) For Hotels Palace and Vendome, get off at Bruxelles Nord and take the tram (Pre-Metro, in the station) to Place Rogier (just 1 stop). For Hotels President WTC, Palace and Vendome, get off at Bruxelles Nord and take the tram (Pre-Metro, in the station) to Place Rogier (just 1 stop). For Hotels Atlas, Arcade Ste. Catherine, and Orion, get off at the Gare Centrale, follow the signs to the Metro (line 1, station Gare Centrale), and take the metro to station Ste. Catherine (line 1a and 1b, direction Heysel or Bizet, both are fine, just 2 stops). For Hotel Opera get off at the Gare Centrale, follow the signs to the Metro (line 1, station Gare Centrale), and take the metro to station De Brouckere (line 1a and 1b, direction Heysel or Bizet, both are fine, just 1 stop). For Hotel Sabina get off at the Gare Centrale, follow the signs to the Metro (line 1, station Gare Centrale), and take the metro to station Arts-Loi (line 1a and 1b, direction Hermann-Debroux or Stockel, both are fine, just 2 stops). There change to line 2, direction Simonis, and get off att Place Madou (the next stop). Hotel de Paris is just near the railway station Bruxelles-Midi, so its not worth taking a tram. The enclosed colour tourist map has nearly each hotel marked with a black number. How to get to the Falstaff Cafe for the Sunday night reception See enclosed map. The Falstaff (rue H. Maus, 17) is one of Brussels best known cafes (always full), art-deco style, and is right next to La Bourse (the Stock Exchange), which is the centre point of Bruxelles. You can't miss it! We have reserved a room there, which will be signposted. How to get from your hotel to the conference By Metro: By far the easiest way is to take the Metro. Buy a 10 trip card at the metro stations or from most newsagents ("Je voudrais une carte de tram s'il vous plait", 290 BF). On the way to the platform insert it in one of the stamping machines in your path, and you can travel anywhere for 1 hour, changing bus, tram or metro without restriction. The University Campus (Campus Plaine, ULB) is directly at station Delta on Line 1b (Direction Hermann-Debroux). It has a common section with line 1a, so don't get on the wrong metro (Direction Stockel). The destination of the metro is indicated on the platform and also inside each car. The line splits at Merode, so if you do get on the one going to Stockel you can always get off at or before Merode and wait on the same platform for the next one going to Hermann-Debroux. Returning to the centre you don't have this problem, all metros direction Heysel are OK. Hotel President WTC: To get to the conference, you can walk to the Place Rogier, and then follow the instructions below for Hotels Palce and Vendome, or else take the pre-metro from the Gare du Nord and change at Place de Brouckere for line Ia (direction Herman- Debroux), and get off at station Delta which is directly at the campus. We will also organise a bus service to and from the conference at about 08.30 in the morning, and after the end of each conference day (hours to be announced).. Hotels Palace and Vendome are nearest Metro station Rogier, line 2. Take direction Bruxelles Midi, and change to line 1a (direction Hermann-Debroux) at station Arts- Loi. Going back to your hotel change at Arts -Loi to line 2 (direction Simonis). Hotels Atlas, Arcade Ste. Catherine, and Orion are nearest Metro station Ste Catherine (line 1). Hotel Opera is nearest Metro station De Brouckere (line 1) Hotel Sabina is nearest Metro station Madou line 2. Take direction Bruxelles Midi, and change to line 1a (direction Hermann-Debroux) at station Arts-Loi. Going back to your hotel change at Arts -Loi to line 2 (direction Simonis). Hotel de Paris is nearest the metro Bruxelles-Midi, line 2. Take direction Simonis, and change to line 1a (direction Hermann-Debroux) at station Arts-Loi. Going back to your hotel change at Arts -Loi to line 2 (direction Bruxelles-Midi. At Delta, the ULB Campus Plaine is signposted (the corridors and escalators takew you right on Campus), and we will have placed ECAL signposts along your route. The conference is at the Forum (see enclosed map). By car: If heavy rush-hour traffic doesn't scare you, follow the signs to Namur (if you can find any), or take la Rue du Trone and Avenue de la Couronne, which will get you close. The Campus is just at the start of the Bruxelles-Namur-Luxembourg autoroute E411. Once you find the Campus, there is a parking lot reserved for you at Access 4. Do not confuse the ULB (Universite Libre de Bruxelles, nearer the autoroute) with its neighbouring cousin on the same Campus, the VUB (Vrij Universiteit Brussel, nearer the centre). The conference is just 30m from there (at the Forum) and will be signposted. How to get from the conference to the Banquet The Banquet is at the other ULB Campus, Campus Solbosch (La Salle de Marbre), 800-1000m from Campus Plaine (see enclosed map). Cross the railway bridge, and go straight, over the roundabout at the Ixelles Cemetry, and still staright on up Avenue de l'Universite to the Campus Plaine, down the middle of the Campus Solbosch (Avenue Paul Heger), and follow the ECAL Banquet signs. In any case we will escort you.
