15th Annual International Conference IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society San Diego, CA, October 28-31, 1993 ACTIVITIES ON NEURAL NETWORKS 1. Special IFAC Sessions: Frontiers in Neural Network Control ---------------------------------------------------------- Two special sessions sponsored by the International Federation of Automatic Control will address emerging control systems and signal processing principles, algorithms and applications that are inspired by biological and artificial neural networks. Examples of engineering design strategies with brain-like capabilities will be discussed. Application areas include adaptive control, system identification, connectionist neural networks, reinforcement learning, brain models and pattern recognition. Speakers: Dr. Paul Werbos (NSF/USA), Dr. James Albus (National Institute of Standards and Technology, USA)), Dr. K.S. Narendra (Yale University, USA), Dr. Renato M.E. Sabbatini (State University of Campinas, Brazil) and Dr. Chi-Sang Poon (MIT/USA). 2. Workshop on Neural Networks in Biomedical Engineering ----------------------------------------------------- This workshop (Oct. 27, 9:00-17:00) will address the roles of neural networks in biomedical engineering. Topics covered will include the use of neural networks in signal analysis (Dr. Evangelia Micheli-Tzanakou, Rutgers Univ.), the relations between Volterra expansions and neural networks (Dr. V.Z. Marmarelis, Univ. Southern California), the use of neural networks in medical diagnosis (Dr. C.N. Schizas, Univ. Cyprus) and the implications of processing in the brain for artificial neural networks (Dr. Stuart R. Hameroff, Univ. Arizona). 3. Technical Sessions ------------------ Papers on neural networks will be presented in seven technical sessions (Neural Networks I-VII) with oral presentations and one session with poster presentations. All sessions will be 90 minutes long. Venue ----- ITT Sheraton Harbor Island Hotel Proceedings ----------- The conference proceedings (more than 2200 papers) will be available in paper form and in a CD-ROM with retrieval software (IEEE Press).
