Annotations and Reviews Schwartz, Elliott and Daniel Godfrey. Music Since 1945: Issues, Materials and Literature. New York: Schirmer Books, 1993. Finally, an alternative to Cope's New Directions has appeared: this 537 page book, avalable in paperback, covers many different pieces, and from different points of view. It is organized by genre, which, in many cases, reflect new aesthetics as well. The text provides historical contexts and analytical/descriptive approaches. It containis around 50 photographs, over 100 musical examples, bibliography, discography and a good index. The breadth of coverage is especially attractive, extending from Britten and Stravinsky to a bit of pop and rock, and containing many younger composers. While I could quibble about some small points here and there, the overall attitude is admirable. This book will be used in the fall in my (upper-level undergraduate, lower-level graduate) course called Music Since 1945! 5/94 Frank McCarty
