September 13, 1995: Rich Karr reported on the Dayton, Ohio basement band "Guided by Voices." Their latest release is "Alien Lanes" (074486101232). September 13, 1995: David Torn, an eclectic, electric guitarist, was profiled by All Things Considered and talked about his bout with a life-threatening illness. The experience led him to make a recording reflecting on lessons learned: "Tripping Over God" (CMP 004435110072). COMING UP ON NPR'S PERFORMANCE TODAY - SEPTEMBER 11-18, 1995 Wednesday, September 13 Hour 1--If the name Keith Jarrett makes you think "jazz pianist," you don't know this versatile crossover artist. Jarrett, who turned 50 earlier this year, is equally at home playing classical or jazz, performing at the harpsichord or at the piano. In this interview with Martin, Jarrett talks about his latest CD featuring music by Handel. Hour 2--Imagine the Supremes in a convent--or living in the 14th century--and you have the general idea of Anonymous 4, says PT commentator and NEWSWEEK writer Katrine Ames. Ames reviews "The Lily & The Lamb," the latest CD by 4 singers she calls "the most surprising girl group in years." As part of Classical Music Month, critic Ted Libbey and Martin pick the top recordings of favorite pieces for children: Prokofiev's "Peter and the Wolf," Saint-Saens' "Carnival of the Animals," and Britten's "Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra." Hour 2--"Listening to Quartetto Gelato's repertoire is a lot like channel-surfing through two centuries of classical and popular music," says the Canadian newsweekly Maclean's. Robert Kapilow, composer and PT's "What Makes It So Great?" commentator, has just found out. On September 19, he releases a compact disc featuring his chamber opera "Green Eggs and Ham" based on the fanciful works of Dr. Seuss. In a weeklong series, PT traces the evolution of this CD from the composer's score to record store shelves. Today's report focuses on the first step of the process: getting rights from the Seuss estate, and hammering out a recording contract.
