Now the discs have come out and they show the care the company put into them musically as well as artistically. The Masterworks Heritage series is designed to cover as much of Columbia's and CBS's rare and unpublished classical recordings as possible. Leslie Gerber has a review Wednesday, November 13 Hour 2--Commentator Barrymore Laurence Scherer reviews the latest CD by German conductor Klaus Tennstedt who despite physical and emotional burdens was still able to ignite orchestras and dazzle audiences. Tennstedt's keen affinity for Wagner is now captured on a two-disc set on EMI with the Berlin Philharmonic. (EMI 7243 5 68616 2) Thursday, November 14 Hour 1--On November 14, 1943, Leonard Bernstein leaped from obscurity to overnight stardom when he substituted at short notice to conduct the New York Philharmonic on a Nationwide radio broadcast. Today, the 53rd Anniversary of that event, a CD of that very concert is being released. Martin talks with a member of the New York Philharmonic who played on that day and we'll hear portions of that historic concert. Hour 2--Martin and critic Ted Libbey pay another visit to the PT Basic Record Library. Ted continues his exploration of spiritual works this month by recommending recordings of the "Solemn Vespers" by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
