COMING UP ON NPR's PERFORMANCE TODAY AUGUST 25--SEPTEMBER 29, 1997 Monday, AUGUST 25 Hour 1-- August Greats: Through Labor day, PT will air summertime encore performances of memorable visits to NPR studios by some of classical music's finest artists. This time, we return to March 1995, when clarinetist Richard Stoltzman and his pianist/producer Jeremy Wall joined Martin Goldsmith in Studio 4B to share music from their then newly-released CD called "Visions," a collection of cinematic themes ranging from "Out of Africa" to "The Lion King." From that visit, Stoltzman and Wall perform music by Giacomo Puccini, Nino Rota, Ennio Morricone, Bill Douglas, and Gabriel Faure. Wednesday, AUGUST 27 Hour 2-- PT critic Rachel Franklin reviews a new set of CDs featuring pianist Alfred Brendel performing the five piano concertos by Ludwig van Beethoven with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Claudio Abbado. (Philips 456 0452) Thursday, AUGUST 28 Hour 2-- Ted Libbey and guest host Melinda Whiting pay another visit to the Performance Today Basic Record Library, where Ted adds recordings of Igor Stravinsky's ballet "Petrouchka" to the collection. Friday, AUGUST 29 Hour 1-- August Greats: In September 1995, Martin Goldsmith was joined in Studio 4A by the Quartetto Gelato, a quartet that includes musicians on oboe, cello, violin, mandolin, viola, guitar, and accordion, for lively conversation and music. This visit was so impressive that the Quartetto won the 1995 Performance Today Award in the "Radio Debut of the Year" category. From this session, we'll hear the group play selections from its first CD: "Chitarra Romana," Variations on Gaetano Donizetti's "La Favorita" by Antonio Pasculli, the Finale of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Oboe Quartet, K. 370, and "O Sole Mio." COMING UP ON NPR's WEEKEND PT--AUGUST 30 AND AUGUST 31 Saturday, AUGUST 30 Hour 1-- Back to Brahms Basics: Critic Barrymore Lawrence Scherer reviews a new recording by conductor Sir Charles Mackerras and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra of the four symphonies by Johannes Brahms. They perform the works in unrevised versions, reflecting the original 19th-century performances by the Meiningen Court Orchestra. (Telarc CD-80450; 3-CD set) Sunday, AUGUST 31 Hour 2-- Critic Ted Libbey and guest host Melinda Whiting visit the Basic Record Library, where Ted adds three recordings of one of Johannes Brahms' final works, the Clarinet Quintet in B minor, to the collection.
