This recording features music by 12th-century composer Hildegard of Bingen, a German abbess who was fascinated by the legend of St. Ursula and her "army" of 11,000 virgins who were martyred in Cologne. (Harmonia Mundi HMU 907200) Wednesday, OCTOBER 8 Hour 1-- Pianist and composer Leonard Rosenman taught piano to actor James Dean and subsequently wrote the scores for two of the legendary star's movies. Martin talks with Rosenman about a new CD that features musical excerpts from these films: "Rebel Without a Cause" and "East of Eden." (Nonesuch Film Series 79402-2) Thursday, OCTOBER 9 Hour 1-- Today is the official release date for "The Historic Broadcasts: 1923-1987," a 10-CD set of recordings of the New York Philharmonic's live radio broadcast concerts. Martin talks with the Orchestra's archivist/historian Barbara Haws about this project and the important role such broadcasts played in the lives of radio audiences.
