From the flyleaf of Lord Russell of Liverpool's "Return of the Swastika?", published (London: Robert Hale SBN 7091 0339 5) in 1968: Lord Russell of Liverpool, between 1946 and 1951 while holding the appointment of Deputy Judge Advocate General was legal advisor to the Commander in Chief, British Army of the Rhine, in respect of the War Crimes trials held in the British Zone of Occupation in Germany. During this period 356 such trials were held involving more than 1,000 defendents. As a result of this experience he wrote his book "The Scourge of the Swastika: a Short History of Nazi War Cimes," which was described by one critic as a "cold, factual and unchallengeable book." Even then Lord Russell found it was almost impossible to meet anyone in Germany who would admit having been a supporter of the Nazi regime. All professed to have had no knowledge of what went on in the concentration camps, nor of Hitler's Final Solution to the Jewish Question, his euphemism for the extermination of European Jewry. In this book Lord Russell reviews the events of the past twenty-one years, during which definite signs of a revival of Nazism have become evident. He deals with the Naumann Plot, the re-employment of many active Nazis in the Civil Service and the judiciary, the glorification of many German writers of the Third Reich, and the tendency of many Germans not merely to forget the past but to pretend it never existed. Throughout these years, as Lord Russell points out, anti-Semitism has not only continued but has increased, and no real effort has been made by the German authorities to teach the young of what went on in Germany and occupied Europe between 1933 and 1945. Most of the history books used in the schools of West Germany either omit to mention or gloss over the Nazis' barbarous crimes. An important chapter in this book deals with the formation and rise of the NPD, the increasing support which the Party has gained at the polls since 1966, and the possibility that at the next Federal elections in September 1968 it will have even greater success. Although the NPD's leaders deny any connection with the old Nazis their manifesto and policy programme are all too reminiscent of those of the National Socialists. It is impossible not to have misgivings about a party whose leader has said that Hitler's only crime was to lose the War, and that there is no Jewish problem in Germany today because "there are only 30,000 of them left." Another chapter deals with the younger generation, which Lord Russell describes as "the Trustees of German Democracy," and it is to them that he dedicates this book. ==eof flyleaf text=== Can someone tell me what the result of the 1968 election was, wrt the NPD? Do school history texts today offer an accurate assessment of the Nazi years? How do they deal with the death camps and Holocaust in general?
