Founded by John D. Hughes, the Buddhist Discussion Centre (Upwey) Ltd. is a charitable self-help organisation, incorporated on 21 July 1980. OUR KEY OBJECTIVES - to introduce a philosophy of life based on Buddhist Teachings. - to encourage the study, practice and realisation of Buddhist Teachings. For these purposes Teachings are given at the Centre by John D. Hughes in Theravada, Mahayana, Vajrayana and Ch'an (Zen) Buddhism. Our Hall of Assembly contains an extensive range of Buddhist art, artifacts and ritual objects from all traditions. MEDITAION ENHANCES LIFE SKILLS Buddhist Teachings, Including mediation, are given at the Centre every Monday and Friday evening starting at 7.30 p.m. Five day meditaion courses are held several times during the year. Frequent visits to the Centre are made by eminent Buddhist Monks and Teachers from other centres and overseas. CH'AN ACADEMY Ch'an (Zen) trains the mind using ink, paper, water, and brush. Classes in Ch'an painting are conducted by the resident Ch'an Teacher, John D. Hughes on the second Sunday and last Saturday of each month. Regular classes are also conducted with visiting teachers. OUR COMPANY STRUCTURE The company operates under the Australian Securities Commission under the Company Code in accordance with our Articles of Association. FULFILLING COMMUNTIY NEEDS Leadership, team and work skills are cultivated at the Centre through members developing the five styles of Professionalism, Cultural Adaptibility, Friendliness, Practicality and Scholarship and applying them to community based projects. Examples of these include fundraising projects for an Orphanage in Bangladesh; participation in community events such as the Moomba River Pagent, and participation on community based bodies, such as, the Word Fellowship of Buddhists and the Ethnic Communities Council of Victoria. These projects have given members the opportuntiy to develop valuable life skills and cultivate the five styles. You too may choose to join one of the Sub Committees which undertake these projects and cultivate the leadership and team skill of; Professionalism, Cultural Adaptibility, Friendliness, Practicality and Scholarship. LIBRARY Access is available to a multilingual reference library which includes rare and valuable Buddhist Texts, commentaries, pre-recorded tapes, slides, Buddhist Journals and Newsletters. The Library resources are being developed on a computer database. Library fee is $20 annually. PUBLICATIONS The B.D.C.(U) Ltd prints a Review three times a year on-site with its offset printer. This review is circulated to thirty three countries. SHORT TERM ACCOMODATION Accomodation during Five Day Courses can sometimes be arranged at Members' residences within the Shire of Sherbrooke. PRAJNA PARAMITA TEACHINGS The Prajnaparamita in 100,000 lines is being taught on Monday Evenings from 10.00pm to 11.00pm. This will be for a period of three years and three moons. From the General Committee, seven Sub-Committees perform the planning, administration and operation of all major activities of the Centre. These Sub_Committees are : Company Administration, Centre Maintenacne Development, John D. Hughes Collection Development, Publications Development, Ch'an Acadmey Development, Dharma Teaching Development and Treasury Development. All management decisions are taken by the General Committee and minuted. In December 1990 the B.D.C.(U) Ltd became a Regional Centre of the World Fellowship of Buddhists. The Centre is a member of the Ethnic Communities Council of Victoria. The Centre is grateful for the ongoing publicity given by the Mountain District and the Free Press. Although the majority of our members reside within the Shire of Sherbrooke, some live in the Outer Eastern Region. May all beings be well and happy. GENEROSITY Some teachings and services at the Centre are free of charge. Ch'an painting lessons have fee charges to cover materials. The operating costs of the Centre, although modest, are covered by the generosity of the members and others who wish to donate money, material and service, if they so wish. Money - This can be cash or cheque ( there is a box marked 'DANA' at the centre) Material - This can include material resources which are used in the maintenance and running of the Centre. Service - This can include Centre Management tasks, lending a helping hand prepare food, clean, garden, help on projects, and publising production. Members have a wide range of work related skills and share these for the benefit of the Centre and other voluntary organisations. TRANSPORT The Centre is serviced by the Upwey rail station. Ring the Centre from the Upwey shopping centre to be picked up. As members live throughout Melbourne's suburbs, shared transport can often be arranged for meditation nights, courses and on weekends. On-site parking is available in the Centre's driveway, for ten cars.
