THE WHITE HOUSE Office of the Press Secretary ________________________________________________________________________ For Immediate Release April 27, 1994 PRESIDENT NOMINATES SEVEN U.S. DISTRICT COURT JUDGES The President today nominated the following seven individuals to serve on the U.S. District Court: Harold Baer, Jr., Denise Cote, John G. Koeltl, and Barrington D. Parker, Jr. for the Southern District of New York; Rosemary S. Pooler for the Northern District of New York; John Corbett O'Meara for the Eastern District of Michigan; and Robert J. Timlin for the Central District of California. "I am pleased to nominate these distinguished individuals to serve on the federal bench," the President said today. "Each has an outstanding record of achievement in the legal community and public service." Harold Baer, Jr., 61, has served since 1992 as the Executive Judicial Officer for the Judicial Arbitration and Mediation Service, Inc. (JAMS). Prior to joining JAMS, he served as a justice of the Supreme Court of New York County for ten years, after fourteen years as a lawyer in private practice. Earlier in his career, he had been an Assistant U.S. Attorney, Executive Director of the Civilian Complaint Review Board for the New York City Police Department, assistant counsel for the state Commission of Investigation and for the city's Commission on Governmental Operations, and assistant to the General Counsel of Greater New York Mutual Insurance Company. A graduate of Hobart College and Yale Law School, Mr. Baer and his wife Suzanne have two children. Denise Cote, 47, has served since the beginning of this year as a Special Assistant to the Assistant Attorney General for the Criminal Division at the Justice Department. She had previously been an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York. Previously, she was Chief of the Criminal Division, a trial attorney and a practicing lawyer at Kaye, Scholer, Fierman, Hays & Handler. Earlier in her career, she clerked for Judge Jack Weinstein. A graduate of St. Mary's College and Columbia University Law School, Ms. Cote is married to Howard F. Maltby. John G. Koeltl, 48, is currently a partner at Debevoise & Plimpton in New York City, where he has spent the bulk of his professional career. After attending Georgetown University and Harvard Law School, Koeltl served as a law clerk to Judge Edward Weinfeld of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York and to Justice Potter Stewart. Koeltl also served for two years on the Watergate Special Prosecution Force at the Justice Department. John Corbett O'Meara, 60, has been in private practice with the firm of Dickinson, Wright, Moon, Van Dusen & Freeman since 1962. Previously, he taught as a adjunct professor at the University of Detroit Law School and he served in the U.S. Navy. A graduate of the University of Notre Dame and of Harvard Law School, Mr. O'Meara and his wife, Julia Donovan Darlow, have six children. Barrington D. Parker, Jr., 49, currently practices law as a partner at the New York office of Morrison & Foerster. He also serves as vice-chair of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, Inc. He is the son of the late District Court Judge, Barrington Parker, Sr. He received both his undergraduate and law degrees from Yale University, and served as a law clerk to Judge Aubrey Robinson of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. After seven years at Sullivan & Cromwell, he spent ten years at a firm that merged with Morrison & Foerster. Mr. Parker and his wife, Toni Trent Parker, have three children. Rosemary S. Pooler, 55, has served as a Justice on the New York State Supreme Court since 1991. Prior to her election to the court, she held a number of positions, including several years as a lawyer in private practice, Assistant Corporation Counsel for the City of Syracuse, Executive Director for New York's Consumer Protection Board, vice-president of Legal Affairs for the Atlantic States Legal Foundation, and a visiting professor at the Syracuse University School of Law. Ms. Pooler and her husband, William S. Pooler, have two children, and live in Syracuse. Robert J. Timlin, 61, has served since 1990 as a justice on California's Fourth District Court of Appeals. Previously, he had served on several other state courts. Earlier in his career, he was in private practice, a trial attorney at the Justice Department, an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California, City Attorney for the city of Corona, and a part-time U.S. Magistrate. He received A.B., J.D., and LL.M. degrees from Georgetown University. Mr. Timlin and his wife, Caroline, live in Corona, California. They have two children. -30-30-30-
