Announcing defrag-0.4
=====================

Version 0.4 of the minix/extfs filesystem defragmenter is now available
on sunsite.unc.edu in the Incoming directory. It has also been uploaded
to tsx-11.unc.edu and nic.funet.fi. It should appear in the defrag
subdirectories on all three archives soon.

Look for the gziped tar file defrag-0.4.tgz.

Changes since version 0.3:

Errors are now much better handled. IO errors during
defragmentation will be handled as gracefully as possible. Badblock
inodes can be specified even on minix filesystems.

Memory requirements are lower. The defragmenter no longer loads the
entire inode table into memory, but just loads individual inodes on
    demand.

Inodes may be prioritised to enforce a particular sorting on the
allocation of data blocks to inodes. This can be used to reduce
seek times when accessing related data, and to reduce the region of
the disk which is actively changing (thus reducing the disk region
    within which fragmentation occurs).

Other than the known inadequacies in the error handling, there have been
no bugs reported since release 0.3b.

There is still no support for xiafs or ext2fs, but these filesystems are
less prone to fragmentation anyway. I will support these filesystems in
defrag-0.5, but it is not a high priority.

As usual, send success stories, bug reports and fixes to
sct@dcs.ed.ac.uk.

Cheers,
 Stephen Tweedie.
