I have been working on the CDU-31A to make it more robust on
drive read failures. Its amazing what types of read errors you
can cause with a little scotch tape :-). A list of some of the
changes:

Read failures no longer cause memory corruption!

Read failures cause the read-ahead mechanism to be disabled
for that data block. This avoids unused bad blocks from
    causing problems.

The retry code will work correctly now.

More than one retry will cause the drive to be reset.

    Support for Soundblaster-16 cards.

The code is a little cleaner.

A special thanks to Allan Clearwaters for helping me debug the
problems. Would CDU-31A owners please try the patches and tell
me how they work? I'm interested in successes and failures,
especially from people that have had problems in the past reading
certain disks.

The patches are on sunsite.unc.edu, named cdu31a-1.0.p1.gz, temporarily
in the pub/Linux/Incoming directory until it is moved to its final
home. If things are positive the patches will go to Linus for the
next release.
