Bash-1.13 patchlevel 5 is available for anonymous ftp from
prep.ai.mit.edu::/pub/gnu/bash-1.13.5.tar.gz.  Diffs from
the previous release, 1.13.4, are in bash-1.13.4-1.13.5.diff.gz
in the same directory.

The same files are available from slc2.ins.cwru.edu in pub/dist.

This patch fixes all of the medium-to-serious problems people have
reported with patchlevel 4. The README describing the fixes is
appended to this message.

=============== README.patch5 ===============
This patch (bash-1.13.cwru.patch.5) fixes the following problems:

1. The Makefile in the documentation subdirectory will install the
manual pages and info file. [documentation/Makefile]

2. The alloca emulation now works for Crays. [lib/malloc/alloca.c]

3. A couple of problems related to completion of filenames that are
quoted or need quoting were fixed. Specifically, quoted filenames
may now be completed, and tilde expansion is performed before
double quotes are added to a completed filename, since double
    quotes inhibit tilde expansion. [lib/readline/complete.c]

(Beware: the quote stripping code is encapsulated in a function
that could be a lot smarter.)

4. More targets and definitions were added to cpp-Makefile to bring
it closer to the Gnu coding standard. [cpp-Makefile]

5. `endian.h' has been renamed to `bash-endian.h', and is only
built and included if HAVE_WAIT_H is undefined.
    [cpp-Makefile, jobs.h]

6. The `fc' builtin option parsing was corrected to allow arguments
like `-2', which are not options but history command specifiers.
    [builtins/fc.def]

7. A problem with `*' characters being written when fc was re-executing
    commands has been fixed. [builtins/fc.def]

8. Some portability problems were fixed. [general.h, getcwd.h,
    jobs.c, siglist.c, signames.c, test.c, trap.h, variables.c,
    lib/readline/parens.c, lib/readline/vi_keymap.c]

9. A bug was fixed that caused the variable holding the file
descriptor bash was using to read a script to be set to the wrong
    value was fixed. [jobs.c, nojobs.c]

10. Some machine descriptions were fixed up (SunOS, SCO, ISC, aixpc,
hpux, drs6000, Cray, M88100), and additions were made to others (sgi).
    [machines.h]

11. A bug was fixed that caused memory leaks with here documents.
    [make_cmd.c]

12. Fixes were made to support/mksysdefs that allow for a list of include
directories in which to search for system header files. This
allowed the removal of some system-specific code. [support/mksysdefs]

13. A bug was fixed that caused the type builtin to think everything was
    a shell builtin. [parse.y]

14. A bug was fixed that caused lines to be joined inappropriately if
history substitution failed or returned a null string. [parse.y]

15. `&&' and `||' were added to the list of tokens that do not need to
be followed by a semicolon when joining history lines. [parse.y]

16. The read builtin was made Posix.2 compliant (and sh compatible) by
fixing it to preserve separators in the input line when assigning
the variables from the command line. [builtins/read.def]

17. The shell looks for `POSIX_PEDANTIC' as well as `POSIXLY_CORRECT'
    on startup. [shell.c]

18. Some portability fixes were made to `issock', which tests for an
invocation by rshd, the function was renamed to `isnetconn', and
it's now used by default. [shell.c]

19. A bug was fixed that caused bash to reset the wrong signals when
    creating a child. [shell.c]

20. A bug that caused incorrect handling of quoted whitespace at the
end of a word while doing variable expansion was fixed. [subst.c]

21. The core dumps caused by expressions like ${*:?} were fixed. [subst.c]

22. The help text for the test builtin was corrected. [builtins/test.def]

23. The `type' builtin should no longer report directories as executables.
    [builtins/type.def]

24. The find_variable family of functions now searches the temporary env
    for all commands in a `.' script (var=value . abc). [variables.c]

25. The default vi mode keymaps were fixed up. [lib/readline/vi_keymap.c]

26. The vi-mode insert-last-argument function now inserts a space before
the last argument, as Posix.2 specifies. [lib/readline/vi_mode.c]

27. lib/readline/vi_mode.c now includes <sys/types.h> and should compile
    successfully on all systems. [lib/readline/vi_mode.c]

28. Problems with the vi-mode `d[Ww]' and `y[Ww]' commands were fixed.
    [lib/readline/vi_mode.c]

To apply, cd to the bash source directory and type `patch -p0 < patch-file'.
