GRASS stands for Geographic Resources Analysis and Support System. It is a
Geographic Information System ... it'll analyze maps, generate maps, allow
you to edit maps, display maps, etc. A lot of government and private agencies
use GRASS for land management.

GRASS4.1 binaries are now available for Linux. You can ftp them from
topquark.cecer.army.mil, /grass. These were compiled with Linux 0.99pl10,
XFree 1.3 and libs 4.4.1. The binaries will take about 22MB of disk space
and contain no data. You can get data from moon.cecer.army.mil. Let me
know if you use them and have any problems/questions/comments/etc.
