FYI. I assume that the Linux community will follow this trend as well.
Please, no questions on "How do I unpack a .gz file?" if this change
takes place. Thanks.

Subject: Gzipped files on prep.ai.mit.edu
Resent-From: info-gnu-request@prep.ai.mit.edu

On June 02, all the gzipped files on prep.ai.mit.edu will be renamed to
have a `.gz' suffix instead of a `.z' suffix. This change results from a
poll taken on Usenet about whether we should avoid conflicting with the
unix `pack' program's suffix.

Mirror sites may wish to rename files ahead of time to avoid downloading
massive numbers of files unnecessarily.
